How to See the Northern Lights in Canada

10 Indigenous-led Northern Lights Experiences in Canada

"At a brand-new aurora teepee lodge run by Aurora Tours.Net, I stayed in traditional teepees and a large trapper-style tent complex, tried on traditional clothing and furs, enjoyed storytelling, and waited in comfort for the northern lights to dance across the sky." - Debbie Olsen

Unforgettable New Year’s Eve Aurora Chase! We had an absolutely amazing aurora chase with Northern Lights Tours and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From the very beginning, Julian was helpful with the booking process and arranging our snow gear rental, making everything smooth and stress-free. Our guide Isaac and our driver were both great. We did our chase on New Year’s Eve, and they went the extra mile by preparing hot chocolate and champagne for the group, which made the night feel extra special despite the cold. What really stood out was Isaac’s dedication and persistence. The day was quite cloudy, but he never gave up. He kept checking conditions, moving locations, and doing everything possible to find clear skies. His knowledge, patience, and determination truly paid off. After stopping at our 4th or 5th location, we were finally blessed with beautiful, dancing auroras—an unforgettable sight and the perfect way to ring in the New Year. We didn’t get back to our hotel until around 2:00 a.m., but it was absolutely worth it. Our family of 7, including a 3-year-old, enjoyed the experience completely! Highly recommend Northern Lights Tours if you’re looking for high chances of seeing the Aurora!

Joined Julian and team for 2 nights of Aurora Chasing, a snow mobile tour and rented winter clothing. The winter clothing fitted everyone well, Julian was very flexible in allowing one member of my party to change size for a better fit. The snowmobile was a great experience as we followed the guide into trails and around the frozen lake, getting to operate our own snowmobiles. The highlight of the trip, however, was the 2 nights of Aurora chasing. An experience that could not be better! Julian led the first night and Isaac, the second. Saw the auroras on both nights at different locations. Although the night started abit cloudy, both guides were able to drive till we saw clear skies which allowed us to see the Auroras in the most magnificent form, dancing even. Hot chocolate and maple cookies were provided. The team also took great photos of us and shared it through a google drive link. Communication was good over email as well. 10/10 would recommend

Simple review: We did 4 night Aurora, clothing rental, dog sled, and ice fishing. This company offers the best overall package at a fraction of the cost of alternatives. Very accommodating and friendly. Detailed review: Aurora - I strongly recommend doing at least 2 nights. We saw very strong Auroras nights 2 and 4. If you don’t do multiple nights, you risk the chance of not catching a strong one. This tour is not like the others. The tour stays out late (we went till almost 3am one night, while other tour buses gave up and went home at midnight) because the hosts are committed to having you witness at least a small Aurora. They took us to a different location every night. They also take pictures until your heart is content. Thank you Julian, Isaac, Halley, and the drivers! Clothing rental - Honestly a necessity. Only half the group rented and those that didn’t regretted it. They give you the whole package (gloves, boots, pants, jacket, and delivery) at a much cheaper price than other options. Dog sled - I was hoping the tour would be with sundog adventures because they have kicksleding but I believed they were closed on New Year’s Eve. Ended up doing the tour with Enodah kennels. This one was toboggan style. Dogs ran an okay trail for 20 ish minutes, it was just alright. Dogs were super cute. Ice fishing - We were lucky enough to witness a fish getting caught by someone in our tent. From what I heard, no other fish was caught the entire session. I think this is the nature of ice fishing, as the fish probably moved away after seeing a brother get pulled to the top. The fish that they cooked for us was very delicious, one of the best tasting fish I’ve had ever. I need to add that they picked us up and dropped us off at the airport on their own expense. If you’re going to come to Yellowknife for your once in a lifetime experience, I highly recommend booking it with northern lights tours.

Julian and his team are absolutely amazing. The night we went out, we saw multiple gorgeous Auroras (while tours with other companies saw nothing on the same night). Julian made sure we all had a phenomenal time and took tons of photos for us to remember this bucket list experience. The snowmobile tour (with Isaac) was just as awesome. We are so glad we found these guys. Book with them! You won’t be disappointed.

Amazing local company, really looks after you on their tours. We really enjoyed the nightly Aurora chasing!! The dog sledding was great, snow mobiling was the kids favourite and we caught fish whilst testing our luck ice fishing! We had Isaac for most of our tours and he was super friendly and knowledgeable and Julian ensured everything went smoothly. Communication was spot on and nothing was too much trouble. Recommend. I was deciding between Northern Lights Tours and other tour options(including Korean tours), and chose Northern Lights Tours mainly because of the price. And I had an amazing experience thanks to our guide Halley. Even though the aurora forecast wasn’t ideal she was incredibly patient and persistent. Halley never gave up and did her best every night to find the aurora. Luckily, on the last night, I saw the most beautiful aurora and literally said “wow” out loud. Although it wasn’t as strong as the auroras I had seen in photos, it was absolutely worth waiting three days for. Whenever the aurora became stronger or started dancing, Halley ran back and forth from the bus shouting with excitement, making sure we didn’t miss a single moment. However, I think the communication with customers could be improved. It was difficult to reach Julian without email, and responses took longer than expected. I also tried calling but wasn’t able to get through. Some important details such as when the pick-up email would be sent (around 5 p.m.) or when the clothing rental would be provided became clear only after I arrived in Yellowknife and asked Halley in person, as I stayed in the same house. If a brief guide explaining how the tour generally works after booking were shared in advance, and if email responses were a bit faster or phone calls more accessible, I believe it would make the experience even better!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with Northern Lights Tours. We did both the dog sledding and the skidoo excursions, and everything was exceptionally well organized, safe, and truly unforgettable. The dogsledding experience was unforgettable — the dogs were clearly well cared for, energetic, and loved what they do. The skidoo tour was equally amazing, with stunning winter landscapes. A special mention to Julian (tour organizer) and Cynthia (dog owner), who were simply amazing. They went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. Thank God I trusted you Julian...not always easy to book tours! Honestly, our only regret is that we didn’t also book the aurora tour with them — after seeing the quality of their other excursions, we’re sure it would have been incredible. We highly recommend Northern Lights Tours to anyone visiting Yellowknife. If we return, they will be our first choice without hesitation.

I did three days of Northern Lights tours and a snowmobile tour, and it was an amazing experience. Big thanks to Julian and Isaac — they really put in a lot of effort, driving us to different spots and making sure we had the best chance to see the Northern Lights. We were lucky enough to see beautiful, dancing Northern Lights, and they also helped us get some awesome photos. One thing I learned from Julian and Isaac: don’t always trust the forecast — sometimes great things happen when you just go with your instinct. Highly recommend this tour if you’re hoping to see the Northern Lights!
