On the Grid : Northgate Gonzalez Market

"This is actually a fairly large chain of markets in Southern California, but they have the goods when it comes to Mexican food. Fresh tortillas. Insane salsa and meat selection. Mexican pastries. Mexican produce. 4 avocados for 5 bucks. Love the colors in the place. Playful signage — Stop reading, go here, and buy food now." - Product Etc.

This grocery store is everything, I wish I wasn't so far for me. I will be back for sure once a month. The soup bar? Amazing the salsa bar? Insane the Acquafresca selection? I can't even. The prepared meats have me drooling, I lived off of the birria for a week. That and the cheese, they have one in the cheese bar that is like a spicy string cheese. Shred that on top of tortilla chips, put it under broil til it's melted, top with the Birria, onions and cilantro, and enjoy with their avocado salsa, I am dreaming about it. I simply cannot.

Google
Great prices and loved how the cashier transitioned from Spanish to English in an instant when realizing I didn’t speak Spanish. They have a tamale bar, a whole deli dedicated to cheese. A pastry deli and even a place to order take out. It was a great experience.

Google
Just love the fresh counters of freshly cooked foods, I go on the weekends to have breakfast ready for my grown children whilst cooking during the week, best Mexican fresh foods and the entire establishment is clean and provides an abundance of selection of your groceries/meats/seafood and all else‼️👍🏾💯YES we cook, Mexican, Jamaican, German and all the tastebuds 🔥

Google
One of the only stores I can say it's mix of culture things. Yes it's mostly Hispanic but there Filipino, Asian ect ... Love it

Google
So much larger and cleaner than the southern location closer to my house. The food they offer is delishus!

Google
I love the tortillas from here. Salsas are also very good. Great selection on groceries. Lines can get very long here. So avoid the rush hours.

Google
Very Big Store. ❤️ Lots of good cooked food, Mexican bread, fresh cheeses, and large butcher shop to choose from. I heard that it's the largest in san diego. It's very clean and well stocked, but the one thing that I dislike every time I go, one of the main entrances is closed. I usually go around after 7 pm. When I asked why they said for safety but the store was packed with people. Shouldn't that be a safety hazard? I'm all for closing down 1 door but like an hour before when the store has died down. I'm just saying. Overall I still like shopping here.

Google
Great buffet and produce. The store is clean and the staff are very helpful. Check it out.

Yelp
Ahhhh...Northgate Market is my go to spot for convenience and quality. Whether I need cold & hot foods, freshly made bolillos or tortillas they always have what I'm looking for including adult beverages ;) I always buy their Shrimp Ceviche, Shrimp Cocktails and chips with Salsa. The inside of the store is pretty well laid out and they do have a small dine in area. The store is always clean, helpful Employees, Prices are fair compared to the other Hispanic food stores around the area and I've never had any issues while shopping here. I'm usually in and out quickly since I already know what I need and I try to beat the rush and will go super early or later in the evening. Makes life a lot easier!

Yelp
It's been for sure more than 3 times when I try to get a hot drink (champurrado or atole), and they are all already bad.
google avatar

Yelp
This location is always packed as it is right off the freeway and the only Mexican market in this area. However they are a convenient location for me as I live a block away whenever I need groceries, a cake, or flowers. I'm not a fan of their hot food like the tamales or tortillas which sucks.

Yelp
I love all things coconut and mango and had to try this place. Love all the options and mixtures. So refreshing and yummy. Mango river is my favorite. The coco mango puree is another top flavor. Service was quick and friendly. Ambiance is bright and delightful. Def would return to buy more.

Yelp
You need to improve your customer service in your Bakery Department. Yesterday and older lady that works in your Bakery yelled at me when I was getting bread she didn't like that I held the door open and was getting my bread and I emphasize the word "My" because I paid for it. She was very rude to me she could have told me in a nice way that I was doing something wrong although I don't see what the big fuzz was about but instead she was unprofessional and yelled at me. Had I not been in a hurry I would have spoken to the store Manager on the spot. If a District Manager or someone in Corporate is reading this please address this issue to the store Manager and the Bakery lady. Sincerely Cee.

Yelp
This location is kept really clean. The lines to pay are always ridiculously long except if you go during the week when all the kids are in school and people at work Or late at night right before closing. The hot food they have is really good except the tamales usually come out soggy and they don't cook them long enough. All departments are friendly EXCEPT for the BAKERY department. I don't know why but every time I go for a cake the employees seem bothered. Last night we went in around 7pm and the store was empty because of the rain and flooding warnings. The girl making balls out of dough seemed bothered when we asked for help. My husband and I were trying to select a cake when she asked if we even knew what we wanted because she had things to do. Uh, hello, the store is literally EMPTY, we're the ONLY ONES asking for a cake and she was bothered that we asked for assistance. I didn't even want to buy the cake there after how she treated us. I love their champurrado and hot food but avoiding the bakery after this terrible experience

Yelp
I don't remember what was here before North Gate, but I used to go to the other location on University Ave and 54th, this one definitely bigger in terms of architecture design, they have a large space for the cafeteria with a long food togo lines both in front and behind the counter, a decent space to sit down and enjoy your food after purchasing them from the express kiosk. I always like the chicharrones con carne here and of course their signature cornbread. Less than a pound of chicharrones should last you a whole day with all the fat contents :) I also ordered some fish filets and some carne asada to try out, the fish were a bit chewy on the outside but the inside were ok, guess the heat lamps did some damage on them for sitting too long. The beef on the other hand were fresh, tender and juicy for the most part. Their cash registers aren't the best, it got frozen, and I had to wait for it to restart so I can pay for my food, they noticed I was hungry so they let me sit down and eat my food then told me to keep the barcodes on each bags to check out after they fixed the issue. Also their parking lots design were not great either. Still the food last me for 3 days now

Yelp
I LOVE stores like this and wish we had one in San Francisco. Northgate is like a huge mega store that includes a bakery, taqueria, butcher department and more. They have so many types of salsas, chips, tamales, ceviches, etc. My head was spinning. I picked up so much, but my favorite items were the aquachiles, ceviche and the habanero salsa. The strawberry and pineapple tamales were okay, but not the best I've had. Still I love that they offer these options and more.
google avatar

Katryn V.

Yelp
Its funny to say, because I never thought I would be one to say this, but TikTok brought me here! One of my favorite influencers had posted her first, and overdue, visit to Northgate (in a different location but still) and I had to go to check it out for myself! It is a grocery store first and foremost, and it definitely carries all your essentials at a reasonable price. My husband and I were able to snag some preseasoned taco meats, tortillas, juices, the works and probably went overboard doing so because they do have quite a couple options. However, this review is mainly for the hot foods and grab and go items. The tamales are pretty good - my husband and I like that there are a couple of different flavor options like the beef, pork, chicken, cheese & jalapeno, and corn. They also have a couple sweeter flavors which we've yet to try. We tend to actually buy these in bulk just so we can have an easy lunch option throughout the week. We also love the big pieces of chicharron, the freshly made guacamole and a couple of the different drinks available in jars like the horchata, strawberry horchata, and watermelon juice just to name a few. The ceviche is nice and fresh and super flavorful and unfortunately, doesn't last us long enough. LOL we always tend to go through all the ceviche we get first since its just so good and you can literally put this stuff on anything. We've definitely been back already a couple of times, and though the service is sometimes a hit or miss - its not bad enough to keep us away.

Yelp
So today my husband was craving some chicharrón and since they have cheese I decided to get some panela then a saw that they have some "queso with chipotle" and don't get me wrong it look good And I was about to get one UNTIL I LOOK CLOSELY AND IT WAS FULL OF MOLD

Kristina M.

Yelp
They have everything here! I was driving to Chula Vista for years before I discovered this place. They have a great deli selection and their salsas are amazing!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to shop for meat! They offer a variety of cuts. And if u are into organs, they've got plenty. Prices were also reasonable consider how expensive meat can be these days. Some butchers can be rude to u when u cant speak Spanish to them, but that doesn't bother me. But the other workers are helpful. I've asked for help and a gal walked me over to the aisle to try to find what I asked for. Produce are fresh and reasonably price. I always get a papaya coz they are always sweet. The bakery is also impressive. Each time I walk by, I wanna grab everything.

Yelp
Finding this grocery store upon moving to California was the first time I'd ever seen and shopped at a Mexican supermarket, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the variety of items and brands they carry as well as an extensive produce section, a hot bar and a bakery. . What I really like about this place is their competitive prices, the hot bar, the home goods and the produce. At the hot bar, they have daily specials including a taco Tuesday deal that includes three (3) tacos with rice and beans. Tacos are $2 each! You won't find them that cheap anywhere else. There's TONS of Mexican products that aren't just food. They have hand painted clay pots and bowls, tin cups and utensils and other handmade dishware. The produce section is HUGE and most of it comes from Mexico such as the papayas, tamarind and hibiscus flowers. . One downside is this location does not have many organic products or vegan/plant based options outside of the produce, nonetheless whenever I need a quick breakfast, lunch or dinner, I'll stop by here. It's clean also, has restrooms and the staff always practice Spanish with me. Be sure to get there before the dinner rush though as the lines get CRAZY long. . Glad to support a local grocer!

Yelp
You can't go wrong with Northgate Supermarkets the Mexican food is amazing and I would recommend it to everyone!!!! The pork tamales and tacos are amazing and the rice and beans are delicious..... this is totally legit

Jesse R.

Yelp
Their tamales went down hill. More masa less meat. Used to be a lot better. Hopefully they fix this
google avatar

Yelp
I read a recommendation about a Mexican "Torta Cubana" (Not Cuban, but named after a street in Mexico City.) Picked up 5 for the family, and 2 ham tortas for the smaller appetites. We were not disappointed. Amazing. We'll be back.
google avatar

Teri G.

Yelp
Can always Northgate for the freshest fruit & vegetables and meat. The guys at the meat counter are friendly and willing to help find the freshest cuts of meat. Their tamales are better than Aunties! The music playing while I'm shopping reminds me of my dad, and makes me sing and dance like a fool! LOL.
google avatar

Ernesto L.

Yelp
Worst place to get last minute items. No cashiers whatsoever. Don't shop. Better management needed to support demand.
google avatar

Curt T.

Yelp
Good grocery store with a good variety of different food. Their Tuna salad is delicious. Fresh tortillas The parking lot was busy but probably because it was the day before new years eve. Reasonable prices as well. Easy to locate and find. Convenient

Yelp
This place is awesomesauce! And the parking lot in this plaza offers plenty of spaces, despite being very busy. So much good stuff to be had here like fresh desserts and baked goods... Honestly though, I haven't even really made it past the tamale stand and the taqueria. The taqueria inside is hard to miss. It's just to the left of the main entrance and serves up burritos, street tacos and agua fresca. open from 6:30am-830pm daily. The taqueria has a Taco Tuesday special that comes with your choice of 3 street tacos, rice, beans and your pick of their agua fresca. I have happily ordered and eaten...nay devoured the tacos served here. The to-go plates could be a bit deeper so I can enjoy a bit more than a "taste" of their beans and rice, but being insatiable is a problem for me I'm told, so take that comment with a grain of salt. Hehe. The tamale stand is also visible as soon as you enter, so you know whomever designed the store layout is a marketing genius! The smell of the yummy tamales sold here takes a hold of my very soul every time I visit and I have yet to overcome the desire to order several. Evidently, I also have a weakness for the Mexican Coke conveniently stacked right next to the tamale stand. Although I am not a fan of Coca Cola, there is something about the taste of it made with real cane sugar that I find hard to resist. So in conclusion, this is a grocery store that offers a huge selection of baked goods and desserts. I am weak to the tacos and tamales sold here. Nuff said.

Jose Luis C G.

Yelp
Sunday 11-26-23 Schedule says they close doors at 10pm I got there at 9:55pm and they manager and guard had doors closed already and telling people from the inside that it was closed waiving their hands I even show them the time on my phone and still didn't care. The schedule says clearly 7am to 10pm which means they are doing false advertising of their store schedules. So if they don't want to deal with last minute customers before closing then state that customers aren't allowed 30 minutes before closing time that will save customers time.
google avatar

Milchy W.

Yelp
The best for tamales but their taco surprised us! El patron will be my tuesday taco! They sell fresh chicharon. Well distanced people. They offer hand santizer as well. Choco flan lacks kick to it. Good to know how it taste like. They sell coke with real sugar cane. Bollilos smells so great and taste delish! Would be coming back for the tacos! Tamales: most flavorful would be pork. Taco: el patron 4 stars: it could be a bit cleaner inside.

Yelp
North gate has everything we need(the essentials)! It's very well organized, clean and fully stocked! The freshly cook food always smells amazing. The staff at always helpful and friendly. It's also convenience that it's by the freeway on and off ramps!
google avatar

Gustavo R.

Yelp
So, no doubt that north gate started to stop paying attention to his customers, I being a customer for years and I appreciate the great good in the food court area, however, and I don't care, trust me, but I found very CHEAP, by the store to sell you the tortillas when you buy a caldo de res. According to the supervisor, cashier and one of the cooking ladies, they have NEVER give tortillas with the order of beef stew, so, what do you provide when they ask for it and eat in the supermarket??? What's next? They gonna charge you for your tortilla in the tacos? I think I this is the only store that it does that, because in 3rd they provide you with 3 tortillas, as they should. Attention managers, and owners, not for saving some cents you end up loosing the dollars. don't bring the bad habits of Mexico, like paying to use the restrooms even tho you are buying the tickets to travel in a bus at the bus station or place your buckets orange color blocking a space at the street and have them "Reserved" for whoever wants to pay a fee.
google avatar

Yelp
Great products at great prices. I overpaid going to a known mexican market in el Cajon... from now on I am making my weekly produce purchases at Northgate

Yelp
I LOVE Northgate Market! Best place to pick up premade food for a fabulous Taco Tuesday (or any day of the week). they have great "family packs" in a variety of sizes that include meat/beans/rice/tortillas/salsa. The carnitas are so damn good here!!! the meat market part is awesome! always get meat for the BBQ here...some marinated and some not. produce rocks also. my favorite things here though are the fresh made guacamole (there is literally a lady making it for you and as spicy as you want) and the ceviche by the pound ...shrimp/fish/mixed/spicy/not spicy...omg it's all so fresh and delicious...sometimes i just stop to grab chips/guac/ceviche for a fabulous meal!!! everyone is super friendly here. I do not speak spanish and was intimidated on my first visit, but quickly learned that it is not a barrier at all =) i'll keep shopping here
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
I love this market it's one of the best places I know to get stuff I can't find it I go there and I go into the little cantina and I buy myself a lot a couple of other chicken tortas I love the thing that's delicious and they have all this hot and cold food I like them buns they're cactus salads and your sushi crab sushi delicious the food Network is absolutely delicious the surface is great too the very friendly and helpful it's a nice place if you're looking for a Mexican restaurant without having to go to a real Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Latasha H.

Yelp
They recently renovated. Adding a new hot food bar, salsa bar and bakery. I love the new hot food bar. Several hot foods can be purchased by the pound. Carnitas... tamales... Spanish rice... white rice... chicken mole... cheese enchiladas just to name a few items. I can't wait to see what the morning hot food selection options are. Positively check in with Yelp to get your free Mexican bread. The bread/pastries are made daily. Several times through out the day. Another store favorite of mine is the freshly squeezed juice. The freshly squeezed orange juice is delicious. Perfect for any immune system. Prices are reasonable. Aisle are clean, free of debris. This location is exceptional busy. Looooong lines no matter what time of the day. Additional, the parking is horrendous such a nightmare.

About T.

Yelp
Yes this is the nicest, biggest and best Northgate in San Diego imo. But can there please be more than two or three checkout counters open at one time? OMG! It takes so long to check out! And the clerks aren't in a hurry either. This really stops me going there most of the time.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Best deal in town for Menudo! $9.99 for a self pour food bar. Best part is that most of the menudo is tripe!!!! And like I said it's self pour so get as much tripe as you want and it's still only $9.99!!! The store recently got remodeled and it's looks great! Carnicería looks clean and dope. Seafood s croon has awesome selections. Siete-Mares prepared ready to boil. Dude it's amazing!!! Pan dulce though... kind of fell off for my taste. It might be the water source... I don't know but it has a taste. I'm pretty picky with water taste, so maybe it's just me. Prices are good for some stuff but not all. Either way it beats the other Mexican/Hispanic stores in the area. Beer selection is very respectful. They not only have the Mexican brands they even go local now too and at pretty competitive prices. If you're feeling not so SAFE about the location of the store, I get it... but stop being a loser! Even if you're to get shot as you come out, hopefully you are and enjoyed your last meal there. It's probably going to worth it. I'm kidding. The area is semi-urban and there are suspicious people hanging out near the entrances but just mind your own business and don't look them in the eye and you'll be fine. Food bar is definitely THE BEST!!!!! oh yeah... incase you didn't know... Northgate managed to get bolillos to be EBT eligible!!! Also, if you use yelp and check-in you can get a free pan dulce!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great assortment of Mexican foods. I love the machaca. It is very tasty with flower tortillas. I put onions , tomatoes, green peppers and hot sauce.
google avatar

R F.

Yelp
If you have a party and need something fast and delicious this is the place for Mexican Food the Chiles Rellenos OMG, tamales, and tacos to go are wonderful. Go with time because it's usually pretty busy, most of the food is self serve.
google avatar

Charles G.

Yelp
I forgot how great this store is. You can swing by and grab readymade meals, from sushi to typical Mexican dishes. They have the best selection of groceries and any traditional Mexican kitchenwares you would need to want. Prices are fair. Service is good. Selection off the charts excellent!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Aside from being busy, great place to pick up groceries, Mexican breads, ready made food and more. There is no longer a person at the entrance to sanitize your cart but they do have cart wipes and sanitizer. The ready made food has never disappointed! The Carnitas(Pork), Tripas de Res(Beef Intestines) and the Roasted Chicken are our staples when looking for taco meats. The Tamales are always good and have them ready made but they run out quickly, especially the Piña(Pineapple). The cold case food has items like Ceviche, Salsas, Guacamole, etc so again they have what you need if in a pinch. Meats from the case are always great priced and they have a variety of cuts from pork/beef/seafood. The dairy case has you Mexican cheeses, Crema(Sour Cream) and the other staples you need. The cherry on top of this all though is the Panderia(Bakery). By FAR, the best Tres Leches(3 milks) cake I've had from anywhere! I mean ANYWHERE! Bolios are solid and the normal Mexican cookies and Conchitas too. All in all this place is just your local grocery store with ready made food, Carniceria (Butcher), Dairy case, Cold foods like Ceviche/Salsa, Panderia (Bakery), nice selection of fruits/vegetables and always have had great customer service. Will always be back!

Yelp
Had A Cuban Torta Today, Was Delicious....I Ate At 930...And Am Still Full At 5pm. I'm Going To Go Back And Try A Carne Asada Burrito
google avatar

LINA M.

Yelp
My go-to for taco meat and especially the condiments. I love how they also sell fried fish here it's so convenient when I want to make this Lao fish wrap and it's cheap!

Chris C.

Yelp
Cashier literally watched me get shoved, cut in line and cussed out for no reason. Called security on us and they let him cut me and continue to cuss me out and have the nerve to tell the guy who assaulted me thank you. Trash security.
google avatar

Sundee V.

Yelp
I will never ever step foot in this market again I had a horrible experience with my husband today we went to use their coinstar machine it was malfunctioning I'm not even sure the manager accused us of only putting two pennies in I put a good $15 worth of change the receipt was incorrect she wouldn't do anything about she watched the video and lied right to our faces I really do believe she's racist my husband is African American and I'm Hispanic and white and she looked at us like we were the low life gum of the Earth this is not over yet I need my money back that was all I have until payday she is a very rude awful mean person and should have no business working in this field at all!

Yelp
I had a meeting in the area so we all decided to meet up at Northgate afterwards for an early dinner. One guy in the group said this particular Northgate was awesome and he comes to this location almost once a week to buy meats/produce. The food court is pretty impressive. They have a variety of hot items that are visually appealing. It was confusing on how to order. There's one section where items are sold by the pound. Then there's another section where you can only pay at cashier, then hand the paid ticket to another girl, who then assembles your order. We tried: Chicken soup: - this was a bountiful chicken soup with lots of white meat chicken, corn, carrots, and potatoes. They give you a side of Mexican rice and onion/lemon/cilantro Beef soup: - this was my favorite. The beef was tender and fatty. Loved the broth as it was clean and tasted super hot Birria combo: - the chunks of beef were fatty and delicious. Comes with a heaping side of rice and beans. Fried pork skin: - usually I hate this stuff but the version here was darn good. The pork skin tasted nicely fried and had a good crunch Pig ears: - someone ordered stewed pork ears (she liked them). The two chilies they placed on top were crazy spicy The staff spoke mostly Spanish so translations might be lost. They work hard and were mostly kind with our large group ordering a crazy ton of food. I also noticed a woman preparing freshly made guacamole. The sample was pretty good. I wonder if she can custom make the order (extra garlic, chilies, etc). Not a bad price either (I think $7.99/lb). This was a really cool location that was well organized and clean. I would re visit if I was in this part of town sometime soon.

Yelp
Every visit I make to this place, I feel like I am in Disneyland! So much variety of items I love most were available! From those fresh "chicharrones" to the freshest produce, meat, beverages, flowers, and the taco stands in which is the best part of the place! The variety of sauces made there were the freshest and delish! , Anything you can think of finding true Mexican ingredients in my cookings were all here! For the price? It's unbelievable cheap! I love to eat Mexican food so I get the items here to cook and sometimes, I just want to hang out at the food section and devour a couple of tacos and fresh fruit drinks! I live afar from this place and I make it happen to plan coming down here frequently it's because!
google avatar

Magda S.

Yelp
The food that comes out of the kitchen is so delicious and always hot! My favorite are the tamales, they all taste so so so good! Also the service here was great, especially Alicia! She's a very good employee and actually saved me some money which I was very happy about! She is well informed about the prices and deals they have at the store she works at! She was also very quick at checking me out and those lines were very long! Thank you so much Alicia for your help :)!

Yelp
I love this place even with the long lines fresh shrimp and chicken the prices you can't beat

Crystal V.

Yelp
Bad customer service . Go on your personal time. I don't recommend early in the morning with the night crew workers and the 7am workers
google avatar

Anacelis A.

Yelp
This is my son's 5th bday cake. We discuss have music notes around the cake and the colors. The colors are not what we discussed the music notes look like Chinese letters and the gave me the cake in a box and when I open it the top is stuck to the top. Not ordering from them again. The taste I'm sure is fine but presentation is awful and I have no time to change the cake.

Erik R.

Yelp
The first time I came to this location was months ago and the experience was fine. I was there yesterday and the tomatillos in the produce section were completely covered in fruit flies. Not just a couple but an actual swarm. I told the cashier but she didn't seem to care. I hope their 54th St location is a better option next time.
google avatar

Hugo R.

Yelp
Flys everywhere around the food court just flying around the food and no one cared at all soo nasty never ever going back to that birth gate big fly inside my ceviche soo very disappointed

Oscar G.

Yelp
Grandes líneas para pagar. Buenos precios..pero lleven un buen tiempo para hacer fila al pagar
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
I just went there and the guy at the door said they were closed. I asked him what their hours were. He said 7 to 10. I checked my phone and it was 9:58pm. Maybe Northgate should change its hours to 7am-9:55pm?

Yelp
Tres leches cake!!! I love love love ethnic markets. Mexican supermarkets and Asian supermarket to be exact. Everything is so cheap and efficient. You want pre-marinated carne asada of high quality but half the price as Vons AND made by real Mexicans? Yes come here. OR OR do you want a moist delicious TRES LECHES cake?! And only for $13.99?? It won't be your nasty dry Von's cake or overly chocolately. It's a delicious sponge cake made from 3 different milk. I believe it's evaporated, condensed and cream... Not overpriced, best cake in town. I wish there is a Northgate in central SD... the closest one is right below downtown... But seriously I cannot wait to come back and get more Mexican food and a tres leches cake to myself.
