What impressed me equally was how strongly the museum pairs that historical side with contemporary art commissions and exhibitions. It doesn’t feel like two separate worlds; instead the modern work dialogues with the history and place in a meaningful way.
And then there’s the museum gift shop. Without exaggeration, it’s genuinely one of the best I’ve ever seen. The range and quality of objects - local art, thoughtful design pieces and things that reflect the character of the region - make it worth a stop even if you weren’t planning to shop.
