Norwegian Petroleum Museum

Great museum. It is quite specific museum and if somebody is not really interesting on offshore, oil and gas industry probably will be bored. I am crazy about that and I was so happy to have a chance to visit that place. My close friends and relatives works in Norwegian oil and gas industry and it was so heart touching to see platforms they worked on or built. Very friendly stuff. Very clean and generally modern and new building. Clean toilets. My kid loved visitors game and a prize ❤️. She loves it and for now the prize is her the biggest treasure. Price is quite high. It was something about 250 NOK for 1 adult and a school age kid but still worth. And what I like the most - the museum is open from 10:00 while all the other museums are open from 11:00. From my side - I do recommend to visit that place.

Very informative, interesting and interactive. This museum wasn't top of my list when I first came to Stavanger but I really enjoyed it and I'd recommend going. The history was fascinating and there were a lot of interactive elements.

The museum, with its offshore-rig-inspired architecture, offers an impressive mix of interactive installations, historical context, and hands-on learning that appeals across ages. One of the highlights on both visits was the short film “Oil Kid” — a fun, engaging introduction to Norway’s petroleum history. It’s in Norwegian with English subtitles, so adults and reading-age children can follow along easily. For younger kids who cannot read yet, the story may be harder to follow, though the visuals are entertaining enough that they usually stay interested. The museum’s layout — three parts in total, including an outdoor area where visitors can try the escape chute — keeps the experience dynamic. The offshore-platform-style playground in the corner remains a hit for children, blending climbing and play with light-touch learning. For adults, the detailed models, reconstructions, and simulation areas offer plenty of depth and context, making the visit genuinely educational. ⭐ Highlights & Recommendations • Perfect blend of learning and fun, with interactive simulations, films, and rig-themed installations. • Oil platform playground for children — safe, creative, and a great way to keep younger visitors engaged. • The escape chute outside is uniquely memorable and a fun demonstration of real offshore safety equipment. • The “cat-astrophe room” lets you test how fast you can operate in darkness. • Excellent storytelling throughout the exhibits, from environmental challenges to Norway’s oil-industry transformation. • Ideal for mixed-age groups: adults can explore the technical and historical displays while kids enjoy hands-on sections. 📝 Tips for Visitors (Families, Groups, Adults) • Plan 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on interest level and whether kids spend time playing or watching the film. • “Oil Kid” is worth watching — especially for adults and reading-age children who can follow the subtitles. • The “cat-astrophe room” is not recommended for adults with mobility issues or for very young children. • Great rainy-day activity — most of the museum is indoors and climate-controlled. • Located right by Stavanger harbour — relatively easy to park and to combine with a city walk. ⚠️ Constructive Feedback / Observations • Some interactive exhibits, while well-designed, showed a bit of sluggishness or partial malfunction during our visit — expected in a high-touch museum but still worth noting. • The simulation and escape-chute areas can get crowded; splitting larger groups helps keep things moving.

We had originally wanted to visit the Norwegian Petroleum Museum by the waterfront of Stavanger. Nearby, you can also see unblocked views of the Stavanger City Bridge. However, at the entrance of the museum, Kate suggested that Tom go to the museum himself, saving $25SGD. But Tom decided that it would be better if we went together. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be an experience and memory that we would create together. As a result, we didn’t visit. But thankfully, there were some outdoor exhibits that gave us an idea of what the museum was about. If you don’t already know, Norway has alot of oil and gas. A major exporter of energy and seafood. In fact, 20% of Norway’s GDP comes from oil and gas which is quite substantial. This museum showcases the deepsea exploration and extraction of oil beneath the seabed. One of the outdoor exhibit was actually an underwater workshop used to make repairs on-site, at the seabed. Hence, proper depressurising had to be done for the safety of the workers underwater. Really cool stuff actually. A huge drill was also on display here as well. The rest of the park looked like a playground and skateboarding park for the kids to enjoy... Nice small museum giving a lot of knowledge about petroleum business. I really loved all the showpieces and models explainig how crude oil od extracted from the sea bed.

Intriguing museum about an important part of Norwegian history. It features interactive exhibits that are in both Norwegian and English. I recommend the vertical movie located at the end of the tour of the model oil platform. Was really interesting to see how the oil and gas were pulled up in a vertical, immersive way.

A lot of information and entertainment about Norvegian oil extraction. Was there with family and everyone really enjoyed it. Reccommend visiting!
