Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris

Stepping inside Notre-Dame on a quiet Monday afternoon in early February was a highlight of my trip. The interior atmosphere is profoundly moving, where the vast Gothic arches meet the soft, wintry light filtering through the clerestory windows. Despite the ongoing restoration efforts, the cathedral’s spirit remains untouched; you can feel the weight of centuries in the quiet hushed air of the nave. The intricate details of the Rose Windows are even more stunning in person, casting vibrant colors across the stone. Visiting during the off-season provided a rare, peaceful perspective of this architectural masterpiece, making the experience feel personal and incredibly spiritual. It is a powerful testament to history and resilience that everyone should witness at least once.

Fully restored after the near catastrophic fire of 2019, the cathedral walls, stained glass in particular as is the interior and entire of the structure are probably in the most glorious condition in modern era. Spared from attack in WWII, it is the religious heart of the city. The numerous interior chapels, each with their own unique design and religious history are a story all by themselves. Preparing ahead of time and learning some of the history will make the experience a highlight of your visit to this centuries old religious center. There are some security lines to pass through, so be prepared to be exposed to the elements before being able to enter the cathedral.

I hadn’t visited before the restoration, so to me the renovation makes the cathedral feel almost brand new. It does lose a bit of its aged, historical atmosphere, but the interior is still very impressive. The ceiling is incredibly high and gives a powerful, uplifting feeling. I felt genuinely honored that it was open again and that I could finally step inside. Booking online is definitely recommended. That said, during the low season (winter), the wait without a reservation isn’t too bad. In summer, I’d strongly suggest reserving in advance. The visit itself takes about 30 minutes. There is a lot to see, but I personally just walked through once and stepped back out. Interestingly, I found the exterior more beautiful than the interior. The outside of the building is absolutely worth sitting down and taking time to admire — every detail feels carefully and thoughtfully crafted. I’m truly happy to see this cathedral reborn. As a world landmark, I really hope it will be well protected for generations to come.

Notre Dame is one of those places that feels special to see in person, even if you only spend a short time there. I did not stay too long or go into every part, but just walking around the outside and along the river nearby was already worth it. Seeing the architecture up close makes you appreciate how much history the building carries, and it feels like one of those landmarks that naturally slows you down a bit during a busy day of exploring. It is definitely a place I would pass by again, even just to sit nearby and enjoy the atmosphere for a few minutes.

We visited both the cathedral itself and paid to climb the bell towers separately. Would highly recommend both, as well as reservation for the cathedral to skip the queue to enter. Interior of the cathedral was stunning. Amazing to see and experience how the cathedral was like centuries ago with the recent post-fire restoration and cleaning. View of the bell towers was great, was cool to look into "the forest" and the spire up close! Also cool to see how the clocks stopped as a result of the fire. Hopefully the clock will be repaired and restored in due time.
