Notre-Dame de Bayeux

This ancient church is so amazing. Bayeux is an amazing town and this church at its centerpiece was a marvelous surprise. There was a seasonal night market I found and shopped for some lovely trinkets and delicious local sausages. Then at around 10pm there was amazing light show on the surface of the church. Just an amazing place. I think my next trip to France will be strictly a stay in beautiful Bayeux.

Huge and amazing! Startling and so thankful that this beautiful 13th century architectural marvel survived all the Normandy battles of world war II. Free to enter. No good parking close by except on the street if you are lucky.

Magnificent cathedral both inside and out. Has impressive stained glass windows and interesting crypt. My favourite installation is a board running round the outer part of the crypt (mimicking the Bayeux Tapestry) but simply recording history in plain words from Jesus to present day listing significant events, eras and every single Pope with the length of their term ..fascinating

Very impressive cathedral which is nearly 1000 years old. Pleasant self guided tour with visit to crypt. Recommend a visit when in the city.

Wonderful cathedral that’s worth a visit. You may even be lucky enough to hear the amazing pipe organ!! During the summer there’s a wonderful and dazzling light show, inspired by the lush, colourful world of Alain Thomas — a master of naïve-primitive painting. Well worth seeing. Selected nights from dusk to midnight.

A cathedral that befits the beautiful city of Bayeux. Great to visit at any time but the evening market and light show done every other day through August is well worth experiencing.

This is a beautiful cathedral located in the heart of charming Bayeux, France. Looks stunning on the outside, especially with the background being the countryside small town of Bayeux. You can enter the cathedral for free and tour the inside in under 1 hour. The inside architecture is stunning and beautiful!

Absolutely beautiful. A must see while in Bayuex. The townspeople still attend mass on Saturday and Sunday.

The Bayeux Cathedral is also known as Cathedral of Our Lady of Bayeux, and in French it's called "Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux". It's a Roman Catholic church located in the town of Bayeux in Normandy, France. The present-day cathedral was consecrated on July 14th, 1077. It was listed as a Historic Monument since 1862. The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Bayeux is located on the vestiges of a forum dating back to the Gallo-Roman period, built on Merovingian ruins. If you're ever in Normandy, you got to visit this cathedral! It's really close to Omaha Beach, and the Normandy American Cemetery & Memorial. Unlike the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, this isn't a popular tourist attraction. You could literally walk up and inside this cathedral on your own. It was so beautiful to visit in the inside & outside, and it's very intimate too! Even though this cathedral has been around for nearly 1,000 years; they do have a plaque that honors the Allied Soldiers that liberated France during World War II. It's a part of history that you must visit when you're in the small historic town of Bayeux, and when you're in Normandy.

A soaring Gothic cathedral with a thousand years of history. We visited on a sunny day in late April with the western stained glass windows alive with colors. Take a stroll around the exterior to appreciate the size and exterior carvings then enter to view the amazing stained glass. You'll probably only need about 30-40 minutes.

Did you know that the Bayeux Cathedral is a large as Notre Dame in Paris? Since you can't visit Notre Dame after the fire, we were lucky enough to visit this cathedral. It's not swarming with tourists since it's in Normandy, so we were able to use our Rick Steves guide book and slowly take it all in. No charge to get in. Super impressive. You can't leave Bayeux without seeing the Cathedral.

If you are visiting the museum where the Bayeux Tapestry is on exhibit, make sure you take a little walk and drop by Bayeux Cathedral. Visiting the Cathedral itself is free of charge unless you want to join a guide tour. The Cathedral was constructed in the mid 11th Century and William the Conqueror was present for its consecration in 1077. So it has both historical and architectural significance. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to 18 centuries until it move to the new museum. A place of history, A place of worship and definitely a place to get me out from the cold and the rain!

We ducked in here briefly as we walked back to our hotel for dinner. As such, I would not characterize our visit as a full tour, as we were only there for about 15 minutes. There was a service going on as we arrived, so we were also limited in where we could go in the building. The architecture is impressive and some of the stained glass is really nice. If we'd had more time, I would have returned here for a real tour. One good thing was that it was not swarmed by tourists, so you got to experience it at a more relaxed pace than, say, Notre Dame de Paris. Also, this is where the Bayeux Tapestry was displayed (only once a year) for hundreds of years, apparently. Now it is in a separate museum a few blocks away. Recommended.

I am not religious, I visit churches for historic and architectural interest. I was in Normandy for a tour of the Canadian D-Day sites and the night before, we came across the church. Rather, the church came across us... It is unbelievably breathtaking. This building dates back as far as the 3rd century with the finally additions being from 1867. Bayeux was untouched by artillery; this church is a testament to the sanctity and beauty of this town. The additions through the centuries are very interesting to see. The changes of design are evolving before your very eyes!

Rebuilt as a gothic church, the towering Bayeux Cathedral can literally be seen from almost any part of the town. The cathedral not only has sublime architectural details, but also has significant historical significance. It was originally constructed in the presence of William, the conqueror. It is in this very same place where Harold took the oath to stand by William, which he ended up breaking later leading to the War of Hastings. I recommend visiting the Bayeux Tapestry Museum first to learn about the history of the War of Hastings before visiting the Bayeux Cathedral. This church also was the original home of the 70 meter long tapestry, which is now carefully protected inside the Bayeux Tapestry Museum. Bayeux Cathedral suffered serious damages and was later rebuilt in the Gothic style. While walking inside the cathedral, notice the architectural details and the paintings on the glass stained windows. The cathedral is stunning, both from the inside and from the outside.

This is a fabulous cathedral in the centre of Bayeux. The original church was completed by Bishop Odo in 1077 of which only the crypt and parts of the west towers remain. Most of the stonework is Gothic and the crypt is decorated with frescoes of angels playing musical instruments. An eclectic mix of architecture worth a visit and lovely stained glass. A credit to the local area as the flowers were in beautiful bloom in November.

Quick no-brainer to stop inside while you are in Bayeux to see the eponymous tapestry. Breath-taking Gothic cathedral with interesting architecture even after seeing many of these impressive churches back to back - each has a unique design. Like almost all other such Gothic cathedrals in France, it is actively in use, no flash photography, admission is usually free or small donation. Stained glass and interior is impressive, but it's no Sainte Chapelle of course.

This tourist attraction has definitely gone down hill since visiting it in the 90's. The influx of tourists has degraded the site. Free to enter the church. You have to pay 15 euros to go up to the bell tower. We entered the church and there was a mass going on at the same time. Tourists still had the nerve to take flash photos of the mass even though flash photography was not allowed. If visiting here, please be respectful. It's still a place of worship. There really is no need to take photos of the interior of the church even without a flash. Save your photos for the exterior and also if you climb up the bell tower, you can get good shots of the city view as well as closeups on the gargoyles. It's a gorgeous building but stupid tourists have degraded it's feel and vibe that's why I only give it 3-stars.
