Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church is a small stone Catholic church on Place Royale in the lower town of Old Quebec City. It stands near the center of this square. In 1687, the site of Samuel Champlain's home and a few of the foundation stones were used to build this small, but elegant church. It was completed in 1723, making it one of the oldest churches in North America. Mass is still regularly celebrated there. Even when it is closed, as it was when we visited, it remains a noted tour stop when touring Old Quebec.
The name Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire (Our Lady of Victory) was given to it following the Battle of Quebec of 1690, when the British were forced to retreat. In 1711, another victory against the British added the plural to Victorie when a British fleet sank in bad weather, while it was headed to attack Quebec.
The church, which was listed as a historic monument in 1929, was also designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988.
