18 Places in Colorado to Discover Local Culture–From Past to Present

"When visitors enter this shop, they are immediately greeted by the owner and the brilliant mind behind Novis Mortem Collective. Novis Mortem is a curiosity shop filled with natural history. Inside the shop is a wide selection of pinned insects such as beetles, jeweled flower mantis, bright blue butterflies, Madagascar sunset moths, and more. Within this mix are also beautiful pieces of handmade jewelry like coffin necklaces and earrings. Most of the items inside were crafted by local Colorado artists. One of the main attractions in this shop is the glass dome art pieces. Every glass dome is special and personal, carefully crafted by the designer and business owner herself. Ranging in sizes from as small as a test tube, to basketball-sized domes, many of these works of art include twinkling lights, vintage light bulbs, and a few contain pieces of coral or dried flowers. The atmosphere of this shop certainly sparks curiosity. Most of the taxidermied creatures inside were done so in an ethical manner. This shop is truly one of a kind and affords everyone the opportunity to own a unique memento." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Great shop with a lot of interesting items. My daughter bought a pair of earrings and my bf bought me this bat. Not only is it soft and adorable, but you can microwave him as a heated snuggable. I’d definitely go back and I’d guarantee I’d find something unique and interesting.

My partner and I were always a fan of Novis Mortem, it’s likely our favorite store in Colorado Springs. The new shop has made it even better! With more merchandise and more space. We even got to experience metal yoga with Rhi who is an extremely skilled instructor. It was an absolute joy and worth trying for anyone curious!

I literally just left Novis and I’m still in awe. A lot of taxidermy art and jewelry, and a ton of art prints that are very macabre in nature and unbelievably beautiful. I ended up buying a catacanthus beetle in a display jar, yet there are so many more preserved insects here as well that are great for home decor if that’s your thing. Even the soundtrack in the store left my heart singing with joy - old school goth rock songs (think along the lines of The Cure and Sisters of Mercy). Way worth going back for more in the future! The owner herself is amazing as well.

An absolute gem of an oddities store. Totally unique entomology pieces made with care and fine goth jewelry at reasonable prices. The lady that helped me was so kind and sweet and the store radiates goth/earthy elegance that shows the owners truly care about the vibes of the shop. Also the logo is so sick 😆 11/10 store!

The new shop is beautiful and has allot of wonderful and new creative pieces available for creatives of all kinds. There's something for every price point too. It's so much larger and they are offering all kinds of classes in 2026.

Everytime I come here I'm treated as a friend or family member. My son who is a big entomology fan received a tour of the spiders and it was the talk of the day. This shop is a true gem of Colorado Springs.
