"Carmo Convento, the Archaeological Center of Rua dos Correeiros Evidence of the city's Roman past is everywhere inLisbon, but much of it is buried under modern buildings. Beneath a Millennium BCP bank on Rua dos Correeiros in Baixa, for example, you’ll find tiers of ruins—from the Iron and Roman ages as well as from the periods where the city was run by Visigoths and Muslims—stacked on top of each other like a historical layer cake. For a closer look, take one of the city’s free archaeologist-led tours, which depart most daytime hours on the hour Mondays through Saturdays and descend into Lisbon’s depths to visit the surprisingly intact remnants of a Roman sardine factory, exquisite mosaics, and a Visigoth grave. Just be sure to book ahead; the fascinating tours fill up fast."

It is a great tour which showcases layers of historical occupation, revealing structures and artifacts from various periods, including Roman, medieval, and later times. A lovely lady gave us this tour completely free. You will have to email them well in advance to book a slot. Word of caution- watch your head when you are inside the narrow passageway.

Archaeological remains were discovered here during the renovation of the buildings of the Millennium BCP bank in the early nineties. The responsible attitude of the bank enabled the expansion of excavations and the emergence of this wonderful archaeological center dating back 2500 years of Lisbon's history. Núcleo Arqueológico da Rua dos Correeiros, which was recognized as a National Monument in Lisbon in 2015, contains finds from the Iron Age to the rebuilding period after the Great Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The museum can only be visited by appointment. At your appointment time, the museum's tour guide will greet you and show you around. When we visited, there was no one there other than my wife and me. Our guide was very polite and professional. It was one of the best museums I have ever visited with its research, preservation and most importantly exhibition method. I think they are a very good positive example for modern museology, especially with their exhibition methods. If you are interested in Lisbon history or quality museums, I definitely recommend you to go.

Excellent archaeological sight (not an ordinary "museum") . Book the free tour with an archaeologist (Joanna was amazing-to the point , polite, very informative). The tour takes about 40'-1 hour. I would advise you to visit on the first day of your trip as to have an overall idea of how the city evolved throughout the centuries. The tour begins inside the yellow building (next to the black door that says "nucleo arcaeologico)!!! There is no number over the glass door so you might miss it and miss the tour. No toilets! At some points, the ceiling is quite low so you'll have to duck. If you have serious claustrophobia, you might wish to avoid it.

Museum underneath a bank, excavated archeological site. Guide was very knowledgeable. During tour you get short history of Lisbon through the ages. You need to email and set up a tour time. No walk ins as this is underneath an active business.

Fantastic free tour that gives an overview of how Lisbon has evolved from the first settlements to the present day and lets you get a close-up look at the layers of history under the streets in the center. Easy to reserve via email.

It was a fascinating and very educational tour. Our tour guide Joanna was an archeologist and gave a detailed account of all the ruins. The tour is free but you need to book ahead, they only can do small groups due to the tight spaces. It last for about an hour and I have to say, it is one of the best free tours in Lisbon. The ruins were discovered during renovations of the building and BCP have done a great job in preserving the site and making it pubic for everyone.

The museum can only be visited as a guided tour! You need to reserve up front online or via telephone. This can also be done (with a bit of luck) short term. I filled the form on 12:30 asking for a tour on the same day and received an answer at 2:15pm that i am on the 4pm tour. It is so much worth a visit! You go down some steps and back in time thousands of years. Seeing a bit of the river that flows below the city was amazing. The guide transports a lot odf information also using a screen to demonstrate. A perfectly arranged tour that gets you very close to the old buildings feeling like a time traveler below the city. Perfectly arranged tour! I can definitely recommend it to everybody who is interested inthe acient history of the city.

We really enjoyed our guided tour of the archaeological museum housed in the Millennium BCP bank. Isabel was our guide and she was so knowledgeable of the history and artifacts on display. The interactive recreation really brought to life what must have occurred hundreds even a thousand years ago. It was informative without being overwhelming. The fact that this tour is also free is just amazing. It was easy to book our tour via email, just by indicating a date and preference for afternoon. The entrance is at the back of the bank, easy to find. Number above the arch of the door. We would highly recommend this tour, and if you’re lucky enough to get Isabel, you’ll be in good hands.
