This State Is One Giant Summer Camp for Kids and Adults — Here's How to Plan the Perfect Family Trip

"Surely Nunan’s Lobster Hut has been the set for a TV drama a la The Affair, but if it hasn’t yet, it should be. Nunan's has been around for 70 years, and thank goodness for that, because I don’t want it to go anywhere." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Service was perfect and very personalized! Our waitress spent a lot of time explaining the menu with us, and also advised the best way to remove the shell off the lobsters. The lobsters were very fresh & sweet. Highly recommended for your Maine lobster treat!

Google
First time to ever try a lobster roll in Maine. We had one with butter and one with mayo. Have to say that although butter and lobster naturally go well together, the one with mayo was really good. Note: they don't take credit cards. Given the prices for lobster you'll need a bundle of cash. There is an ATM outside.

Michelle Noonan

Google
This cute lobster hut is a must-visit! The service is fast, and the staff is incredibly friendly. The fresh lobster is sweet and absolutely delicious, making every bite worth it. The vibe of the restaurant is fun and laid-back, perfect for a casual meal with friends or family. If you’re a lobster lover, this place won’t disappoint — it’s a simple, delightful spot that delivers great food with a friendly atmosphere!

Google
We were so lucky to have found Nunan's Lobster Hut before they closed for the season. Such a cute place, great service, food was delicious, after we had tried the Clam Shack and was beyond disappointed. The waitress was so sweet, the food delicious, we had a lobster roll, with chips and pickle, and clam chowder. Absolutely what I was looking for in Maine. Delicious! Highly recommend!

Google
Nunan's Lobster Hut was a great find. The food was fresh and delicious, and the service was wonderful. Our server came running after us when my daughter left her book behind, which really stood out. The location feels tucked away in the best way, giving it a hidden gem feel. The interior is cozy and full of lobster shack character, making it feel warm and welcoming. It's a perfect spot for a relaxed and memorable seafood meal.

Google
Here on vacation with my wife and loved this place. The lobster was so fresh and tasted great! Also the clam steamer was amazing ! We both got clam chowder as well which was also great! The only thing that wasn’t perfect was the shrimp cocktail—kind of small (only five shrimp) and kind of meh. Still, such a special place!

Google
Food was good, but our table of 10 received food at all different times. Some food even delivered as the entire table had finished their meal. Waited 30 minutes for the bill and was told it was my fault because we apparently did not tell the server that our table wanted bills, Despite the fact that we were ordering as separate families And advised the server of that. The owner was very rude about the Situation and proceeded to point fingers, place blame and complain about our table in front of other customers. When I asked for my bill again She calculated other peoples bills rather than mine out of spite while I stood at the counter for another 15 minutes. She continued to blame me for the delayed service while she did this. Once she finally got around to calculating my receipt, she threw it at me and mocked me. I have been going here for about 10 years, and the rest of our entire family even longer than that… Probably 50+ years. I personally Will not go back ever again as this ruined the entire experience.

Google
Had the lobster roll, warmed with just butter. It was good, portion of lobster was average to below average. Served with a bag of lays and 3 pickle slices. One in our party got the special which was 3 soft shell lobster. These were very good.

Yelp
Nunan's is a classic Maine lobster spot with a quintessential New England sea shack vibe. No frills here, just fresh lobster. Whole lobsters come pre-cracked to save you some of the labor and mess. Lobster rolls can come Maine-style or, if you're a CT girl like me, you can cheat and order a plain lobster roll with a side of hot butter. Served on a toasted hot dog bun the way it's meant to be! Clam chowder was flavorful and not too thick. Service is friendly, but make note they are cash only. ATM on property, indoor and outdoor seating options.

Yelp
Fun - old fashion feel to the place - which hasn't changed all that much from our last visit - over 20 years ago! (obviously we aren't from the area otherwise...) There are outdoor picnic tables (new) and the pretty much the same indoor area. The ceilings are decorated with all kinds of nautical items and walls with newspaper articles from over the years. The clientele seem to be 75 % locals and the others tourists. We came for whole lobster for the most part and we were not disappointed in the 1.5 lb ones we received which were $$$ less than other places. Like before they came with a bag of potato chips, a roll and some pickles! For a whopping $1.50 you could splurge for a baked potato. One of our group had the Lobster Salad and was very satisfied with her choice. Off the beaten path but worth the drive. The do have wine and canned beer. Cash only ! Worth the short drive out of Kennebunkport.

Yelp
This spot is just a straight up tourist trap. It was recommended to us as the best spot for lobster but I've had better (and cheaper) lobster at chain steakhouses in the middle of the country. The lobster was mediocre, not sweet, and just tasted of water. It is served with the worst stale roll, 2 very sad looking pickle slices, and a bag of Lay's. The blueberry pie was alright but it wasn't even served warm. It was just so lackluster and unmemorable. We had much better lobster meals at others spots that this one is a definite skip. Even a local we spoke to nearby said she didn't care for it. Our server was rude. (There was one server who seemed very nice and engaging but sadly she wasn't assigned to our table.) Also beware there is NO A/C and on hot summer days, it's incredibly muggy. They are also cash only, though there is an ATM on site.

Yelp
Looking of lobster in Kennebunkport? Nunan's is the place. They catch their own lobsters here in KPT and serve them up in their restaurant. There is plenty of seating inside and on the patio, but being a popular place, you'll still want to get here early. The patio is dog friendly, so bring your well-behaved pups! Besides serving up some tasty lobster, Nunan's has a few menu items for those looking for something else such as hamburgers and hot dogs, clams, grilled cheese, and shrimp cocktail. During my most recent visit, I tried their tuna salad roll (like a lobster roll, but with tuna salad) and it was pretty specular. The food at Nunan's is excellent, but also affordable. For example, a cheeseburger is $12. Grilled cheese is just $6 and a lobster roll is $25. Nunan's also has desserts you'll want to save room for like homemade blueberry pie and hot fudge sundaes. Nunan's has beer, wine, and soft drinks too. Just make sure to bring your cash, because they don't accept credit cards.

Yelp
Terrific Lobster rolls! Also loved the root beer. A little out of the way but worth it. Get there early to be sure to get in.

Yelp
Always friendly wait staff and fresh lobster with delicious blueberry pie a la mode The wait can be long so go at five when it opens.

Yelp
This is, by far, the best place to get lobster while in Kennebunkport/Kennebunk. The lobster was caught that morning and served to us hot out of the steamer with chips, a roll and pickle. The special the night we went were two 1 & 1/8 lb lobsters that were cooked to perfection. We ended the meal with a hot blueberry cobbler that was amazing. Our server was amazing. Kind, answered our questions about the history of the "hut" and was very attentive. The only thing that would have made the dining experience a little better is if they had small buckets to drain the lobsters in. The tray gets rather messy with all the liquid and lobster meat and shells. They don't offer hand wipes, but there is a hand washing station in the dining area. THANK GOD! I had to wash my hands twice and felt for the poor woman who sat next to the station. There is plenty of seating. The inside of the restaurant is not air conditioned. The windows do open and there is a fan to move the air around. I can't imagine being inside on a hot summer night. The do not take reservations. CASH only. No debit/credit cards. Ample parking. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g40694-d388036-r971490177-Nunan_s_Lobster_Hut-Kennebunkport_Kennebunks_Maine.html#

Yelp
Our family has been going to Nunan's for 30+ years and always adored it. Tonight was the last time, and we didn't even make it to the front door. Empty terrace, Monday night, 3 people chatting at the edge of the terrace (half blocking the WAIT HERE sign). My mother in law and daughter walk around the little group to get to the front door when IMMEDIATELY and aggressively a woman from the trio yells out to stand back asking "CAN YOU READ", proceeding to move the gentleman aside to shake the metal sign furiously in front of my 3-year old's face. Unacceptable behavior, screaming that she's the owner and that she doesnt need "YOU PEOPLE" (how dare my mother in law speak french to my daughter in Maine), and that we should go back to whatever country we're from. By that point we're all pretty rattled, my 3-year old is crying from all the aggressivity and screaming, and the lady is still ranting about how we're not welcome and should go somewhere else. All this...because we missed the sign and started making our way to the front door through an EMPTY terrace. The owner is clearly unwell, and your money isn't welcome if you're Canadian - go somewhere else. We went to Mabel's. Food was just as good and the waiters welcomed us with smiles. There was also a lineup at the door...go figure.

Yelp
Lobstahs were amazing! I highly recommend the twin 1 1/8 - it was a special for us! Also had the 1 1/4 and 2 lb. The 1 1/8 were perfect. Coleslaw was delish and the clams were a perfect starter! Cheers!

Yelp
My fiancé and I ate here in Sept, 2010. So why am I posting now? Because in Nov, 2024 he will have been gone 14 years. He passed away from kidney cancer. Our trip to Boston, up the coast of NH, and into Kennebunkport, ME, took us to Nunan's. One of the last great photos I have of him is in his lobster bib at Nunan's getting ready to eat his 1 1/2 lb. lobster and corn-on-the-cob! This was after finishing a delicious bowl of lobster bisque. The man whose appetite had been zapped by chemo was eating like there was no tomorrow! We savored every butter-drenched bite of fresh, succulent lobster. I can't begin to tell you how content and happy he looked! The ambiance of Nunan's with its rustic appeal, lobster traps, and down home feeling, was exactly what we were looking for! We didn't want fancy. We wanted fresh and delicious which is exactly what we got! Our service was, as he used to say, "Par excellence!" After dinner we drove down to take a photo of us across the bay from the Bush compound. That was the last photo of us together. We headed back to Boston and departed for FL the next day. Yes, we have FL lobster, but our lobster tails are nothing like Maine lobster! I hope to someday make a memory trip back to New England and eat at Nunan's in loving memory of my fiancé who changed my life and was taken from me way too early at 55. Nunan's, thank you for being such a special part of our trip, and for being such a fond memory for me.

Yelp
Exactly what you're looking for in a lobster/seafood Maine dinner. It will not disappoint.

Yelp
Best place for Fresh Local Lobster! Authentic. They are the best. They know how to do this and do it well. Experienced locals provide great service. I recommend the Twins. Two lobsters. About 1 1/8 pound each. GO! Bring Cash.

Phil S.

Yelp
We had the lobster rolls. Just ok. Server was good. Went out of my way to go there but wasn't necessary.
google avatar

Yelp
Great dinner and location! Lobster was delicious! Try the Blueberry mojito and blueberry pie a la mode!

Yelp
I was so thankful that I read about this place on our last day. We strive just before they opened tans through line outside was not too bad. We sat outside and it's very casual. Food is so fresh and delicious. Prices are good and it's only cash! I read a lot of bad reviews about the service, but our server was friendly and nice. This is 5/5!!!

Yelp
We were in Kennebunk Port for our 20th anniversary. Went to the Ramp on evening and Nunan's the other. The Ramp has fantastic views but for a great lobster dinner I'd go back to Nunan's. Two 1 1/4 # lobsters for $44. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We loved this place. First time there and it is truly a gem. You can tell it's a place that regulars go. We ordered lobster rolls and a grilled chicken sandwich. Everything was great. But the NYE clam chowder was exceptional. Rich and creamy, chucks of potatoes and clams. One of the best I've had. Service was excellent and prices are what we expected.

Martha H.

Yelp
We went here after spending a week going up the coast for Maine. My husband got the two lobster dinner, and he said it was the best lobster he'd had all week! You need to know before you go that it is cash only.
google avatar

Cheryl R.

Yelp
We came based on reviews found here. Drove out to Maine to eat lobster, and we found some great lobster here, along with an excellent lobster roll. It was drizzling preside, but luckily they had tables available inside 'the yellow door'. The inside is full of stuff related to lobster. Old photos, traps, etc. Lots of people walking around taking photos. Menu had quite a few choices if you didn't want lobster, but if you want lobster, there is a platter if the full lobsters on it! They have beer and wine, and delicious root beer too. Dessert was blueberry pie and blueberry crumble, both very good.
google avatar

Naomi R.

Yelp
If I could give ten stars I would. We've had our share of lobsters everywhere and this was hands down the best. No need for crackers. Best lobster ever. I can't believe it took us so many years of coming to Maine to finally stop. There's a reason there's always a line. Worth it. So. Very. Worth. It. And if you have Makenzie as your server you're lucky!

Val V.

Yelp
Lobster - is a lobster!! Lobster chowder bland and crust of blueberry pie under-cooked. We were shocked as when we left and were outside our server ran out yelling at us saying that we 'did not leave a tip' - We, of course, had left a proper tip and it was under a plate. This is very over-rated and the employees are very rude and pushy. We should have gone back in to recuperate the undeserved tip!! There are many restaurants in the area with the same menu - avoid this one.

Yelp
Nunans has always been hospitable and welcoming, the atmosphere is amazing for what they are known for and have produced nothing less than outstanding service and the very best and most delicious Lobster we look forward to eating every year on our visit from Pennsylvania. Love Nunans their ownership and especially everyone who works there. Thank you. Ret/Army Sgt Martin J Evans Sr Wife Susan Marie Evans.

Yelp
I honestly thought I had already written this review! What the heck was I waiting for??? This place was exactly what I wanted it to be and exactly what my lobster dreams were made of. Cold beer. Fresh lobster. Great atmosphere. If you are looking for fancy, this isn't it. It's called a hut for a reason. It's oh so good and oh so worth every penny.
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
We love this little lobster trap! We squeezed inside at a table and loved all the little bits and bobs to look at while we waited. Food was very good and we bought more of the cider we tried on the way home! A place to check off your bucket list
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with the entire family for dinner. The food was so good I can't find the words to do it justice. Atmosphere is awesome and the waitress was super cool. If you don't take the time to have a meal here while you're in town you're a fool!

Yelp
In Kennebunkport I was told by some locals one of the best places for lobster was Nunan's. We had the special of two 1 1/4 pound lobsters and it was great. Family run for over 50 years and still going strong. Only downside is that they only take cash, which in today's day and time is a bit ridiculous.

Daniel C.

Yelp
We were a party of 6 kids (infant included) and 4 adults. It started torrential down pouring right towards the end of the meal. We had a server approach us and tell us we needed to leave because another large party needed our table, and while we were almost done, we were still finishing our drinks at the time. Its a small establishment and as we were planning our exit near the door (lotta kids, lotta rain, some thought was going into it) an older female employee pushed my children to get to a clipboard, and proceeded to push me out of the way as well while yelling at me that I was blocking the exit. After a verbal exchange between her and I, a younger employee told me that I was just trying to disrupt everyone else's time and that "it's only rain, they aren't going to melt." Prior to the verbal exchange, we were not disrupting any customers , and one customer of the party who was to be seated at our table even said to us "you aren't leaving and taking the baby out in this rain." Easily the most unprofessional and rude display of behavior from any establishment I've ever visited, including putting their hands on myself and my children.

Herbert H.

Yelp
No credit card accepted, cash only, and no sign stating that. There's a ATM $$$ machine outside the restaurant. I ordered the special, (2) 1-1/4 lb lobster that were no ware near that size, question if they were legal size. We also ordered cup of lobster stew that had a table spoon of mushed up lobster meat for high price. The staff was friendly but everything else was a tourist trap. The following day I ate at a floating restaurant in Portland that was outstanding for about the same price.
google avatar

D W.

Yelp
First time at Nunan's this weekend and what an amazing experience! We were seated very quickly. Had our order taken and food was on the table in no time at all. My girlfriend and I both had lobster and to put it quite simply there is no better lobster around. The flavors were so mind blowingly wonderfully I nearly asked for a moment of silence out of respect. If you're looking for some of the best seafood anywhere make sure you plan a trip to Nunan's!
google avatar

Jimmy H.

Yelp
Nunan's could be the billboard of Maine if Maine had billboard(s). It's not only a family owned and ran restaurant but it was extremely good and fair priced. My only regret is not ordering more lobster! Always order 2! That goes for the lobster and desserts!
google avatar

Krista S.

Yelp
I went here on my honeymoon in 1999 having found it in a guide book pre internet! Imagine that! we traveled thousands of miles and visited based on a book recommendation? Consequently I have recommended it to various clients over the years and no complaints. It was so good. Fresh lobster on a tin pan.
google avatar

Cathy E.

Yelp
We had Nunan's as our first New England Maine lobster experience. We ordered the special which was 2 soft shell lobsters and steamers. The restaurant was quaint and is a great place with interesting items displayed throughout. We had the 2 1/4 lbs lobster special for 32.95 and the clam steamers were 13.95. The dinners come with a bag of lays plain chips, pickles, and a roll. We each ordered a baked potato with our food for additional fee. The wait time to cook the lobster and other food seemed around 25 minutes which seemed reasonable. We chose to eat lobster which seems to be their specialty and the menu was limited, so if lobster is what you desire than a good choice.
google avatar

D K.

Yelp
What a dumpster fire of a restaurant. The food is meh! To be fair I didn't eat the lobster so I can't speak to that. I had a sandwich which was totally bland. That said, the service was the most memorably poor service I've EVER had at any establishment. Completely Piss Poor Service!!! BUT, the most memorable piece of this story is when it came time to pay for this bland meal. It's cash only, which is fine normally. BUUUT, there are NOOOOO SIGNS ANYWHERE SAYING IT'S CASH ONLY!!! None!!! We had no clue until we were finished eating that it was cash only. I took a photo (which you will see) of the entrance to the restaurant, notice nothing stating it's cash only. There are plenty of signs all over the place though. Not one about it being cash only. So I go to their on sight ATM which was OUT OF ORDER!?! Huh? How can you be a cash only establishment and have a broken ATM? So then I have to leave my girlfriend at the restaurant and drive to the nearest working ATM to get cash. I get halfway to the nearest ATM and get a call from my girlfriend telling me they fixed their ATM and to come back. Apparently it was out of cash. Point is, as a customer you should never have to leave a restaurant to go get money to pay for the meal. It's on the establishment to let you know this upfront. I'm totally baffled as to why they don't let people know this? I'd love to know what the rational is behind this inept business practice. Are they trying to make that $2.50 surcharge for using their ATM? I will probably never know. This place "Nunan's Lobster Hut" will go down as one of the worst experiences at a restaurant I've ever had. Mediocre food HORRIBLE service and being cash only without letting patrons know is no way to run a business.

Yelp
Came here with my BF for a Maine Weekend getaway and OMG. We were only in Maine for 3 nights, and intended to go to three different places for lobster rolls, but we went to Nunan's the second night and loved it so much we went again the next day for our last night instead of trying something new. Simple, delicious, comes with chips which is different but honestly, doesn't matter that much to me. The wait staff recognized us from the night before and I got from the environment that they get a lot of regular customers. They are cash only, which is not that big of a deal, they have an ATM out back that will take a fee. The Lobster Roll was delicious, filled me up, had enough butter, and not too expensive for lobster! Please come here!
google avatar

Gabbi T.

Yelp
Had this as our first meal when arriving in Maine and had to say it ranked highest amongst all the joints we ate in for Lobster Rolls. The lobster was fresh, it was reasonably priced and the Mayo was just the right amount. The clam chowder was also pretty delicious. Only thing that kept me from giving this place a 5/5 was how rude their staff was to our party. I was very turned off at how abrasive and snobby they were to a group of excited tourists that were just waiting for their food. They could've said certain things much nicer than they were addressed to us but at least the rolls were worth it.
google avatar

Jane S.

Yelp
I wanted to love Nunan's way more than we did. The set up is really charming, you can see the lobster traps stacked up in back by the out buildings and the line forms outside an hour before opening. Seems like a total hit right? Except not. Service was truly awful. The hostess wasn't friendly at all. The server was friendly, but she was non-existent. Took the order, dropped the food and that was it. No refills, no check up at all. Now, I will say, I do think she was busy. As were all the servers. I don't think anyone on the front patio was receiving good service. There were a lot of grumbly looking patrons and a lot of apologies from the staff. If the business can't staff properly, then they shouldn't seat so many tables. Period. End of story. It's disrespectful to the servers to give them a work load they can't handle and dishonest to customers to seat them when you know you can't provide good service. Beyond that, the food was just okay. The lobster portion on my lobster roll was skimpy and both of us who ordered lobster agreed it had a very fishy/dirty after taste. The bun was delicious though. My son ordered the steak and it was good, but not worth the price. Overall, it was a nice Maine experience just to be in the environment, but certainly not a place we would return to.

T K.

Yelp
We tried out Nunan's for the first time, the lobster roll was great. Service was good. I wish they had a few more sides to choose from other than a bag of chips, or adding Cole slaw or a baked potato.

Randee S.

Yelp
Awesome!! Everything was great...we were there on the night the season ended in October, 2022!!
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
Great atmosphere inside and plentiful outside seating. Definitely a place to go when the weather is good. Server was nice, food is right down the middle of what you'd expect at the average lobster pound, and prices were in line with what I expected.
google avatar

Sally R.

Yelp
I loved the authentic decor the friendly staff the food was excellent and fast the lobster! was sweet and tender and separated from the shells so easily. Highly recommend.

Michael M.

Yelp
Another Kennebunkport must - actually it at Cape Porpoise. No reservations. Fresh lobsters right off the boat. Interesting decor. I'd go back!

John G.

Yelp
What a fun and delicious place for dinner! The menu has a large selection of items and the lobster is amazing, so good. We ate outside and had beautiful weather, so cute with the red umbrellas and the lobster trap wall. Inside is very cozy with lots of seating, and the place is very clean, including the restrooms. This is a family business and the service is excellent.

Yelp
Best lobster roll I've ever had. First time I've been here but certainly won't be the last.

Emma T.

Yelp
This restaurant is full of character and a must if you're looking to have delicious lobster while in Maine! Check out the beautiful Cape Porpoise while you're in the area.

Yelp
What a great experience and fantastic lobster. This was the first time I ate a whole lobster! Delicious, simple yet perfect! It was a great experience!
google avatar

Tim E.

Yelp
Sunday night special was 2 lobsters so I ordered two of the two lobster specials with bake potato. Waitress brought out 1 order lobster and order of steamer clams. I don't know if it was my southern accent or the mask but I not where she heard steamers. So I said I would take the clams and we shared those. I waited while my lobster was cooking. I should have asked for another plate and took one of wife's lobster until other two came out. I don't eat a lot of lobster so I have nothing to compare to I thought it was good. As for the incorrect item there was no apology or adjustment to our check.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
If you want lobster and nothing else then you have to go to Nunan's. They give you their version of the relish tray to start which is a roll ( I wolfed it down in three seconds-so good!) two pickles and a bag of chips. The lobster comes steaming hot and you barely need a cracker the shells are so soft. This is the best in the area and authentic! The crowd is a combo of regulars and tourists.
google avatar

Brandy A.

Yelp
This is exactly what you want a lobster shack to be! You have your lobster bib, big pan with lobster and lots of butter! Not fancy, family place, plenty of room to get dirty outside while digging in to your lobster! One of the pics is the hubs trying to arm wrestle his lobster... lol!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm sorry to say Nunan's has gone downhill. We ate here a few days ago and the lobster rolls were dry, overcooked and did not have as much lobster as a few years ago. The salads had a lot of brown, iceberg lettuce and a few rotten tomatoes. Too bad, it was an expensive meal to get for that kind of quality.
