ぬのや旅館 Nunoya Ryokan

The location is very convenient, being about a 20 min walk from the train station, 5 min from the main shops and 10 min from the castle. The staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful. We had breakfast at the on-site cafe and it was good value, tasty and the staff were very helpful with accomodating my wife's gluten intolerance. Our room was very spacious, comfortable and had a really nice, traditional atmosphere. The futons were very cosy and the additional facilities in the room - a lockbox and refridgerator - were very useful. The private bathroom for the room was downstairs and very nicely kitted out, with a good shower and Japanese toilet. The coin laundry machine was very affordable and convenient. We liked the shared lounge space downstairs, with the free water and hot drinks. There were some paid drinks available too, such as beer. While this ryokan does not have some features provided by other more premium establishments, like a hot spring and dinner service, it was exceptionally good value and exceeded our expectations. We would definitely book again.

Lovely, happy staff who were very helpful, genuine, and always there to greet you after a day out. As far as Japanese Ryokans go, the atmosphere was casual, but not in a negative way whatsoever. Brilliant location close to the heart of town and an easy walk to all places (including the traino). Would absolutely stay here again.

One of the best place we stayed during our 2-week Japan trip. Staff is so welcoming, rooms are very cute and a lot of amenities available. Very well located on Matsumoto shopping street! You should stay there if you visit Matsumoto.

Really enjoyed our stay here. The staff were lovely. The location is excellent. Lots of lovely shops and restaurants close by and walking distance to both train station and the castle. Room facilities were lovely and the beds were warm and cozy.

This was one of the best, if not the best, stays we had in our one month trip in Japan! The location was perfect, the room was spotless and looked beautiful, and most of all, the service was impeccable. The owner is SO INCREDIBLY KIND AND WELCOMING. When we arrived at Nunoya Ryokan with filthy and wet shoes from a rainstorm, she put newspaper in them and let them out to dry for us, leaving us with perfectly dry shoes in the morning! It was nothing short of a LIFE SAVER. Our whole stay was perfect and we will absolutely be back!

Modern take on traditional ryokan run by very friendly and helpful staff, located close to castle and city art gallery. A bit of a hike from the train station but that also takes you away from the loud karaoke bars. Highly recommended.

We loved staying at this ryokan! The location is perfect, right in the middle of the center, 10 min walk from the station and in one of the beautiful authentic streets. They were very friendly and helpful. We forgot our sandals and they helped us by sending it to our next hotel. Great experience!

The hotel is located in Nakamachi street where there are a lot of historical buildings. It is one of the most popular area in Matsumoto.||||There are a lot of restaurants, shops nearby. Nunoya building is so classic and cool. I was astonished by external view. After you stepped in the building, it is so gorgeous. ||||The room was very clean and comfortable with a Japanese atmosphere. Also I had a good sleep on the futon.||||On the 1st floor, there is a lounge space. You can have some drinks before you go out for a dinner. I enjoyed a chat with other guests.||||This is one of the best Ryokan I would recommend in Matsumoto

This was a beautiful, 85-year old ryokan on Nakamachi Street in Matsumoto. I think this is the best neighborhood to stay in when in Matsumoto-- the street is lined with historic buildings and has many interesting shops and restaurants. Nunoya is run by a lovely woman who was so welcoming when I arrived. To make a reservation, visit Nunoya's website: https://www.mcci.or.jp/www/nunoya/en/ and submit a message to inquire about availability. I got a response pretty quickly. My room was simple, but clean and had a nice ryokan atmosphere to it. The bathroom is okay-- it's nothing fancy. These are pretty basic accommodations in an older, atmospheric building, run by a sweetheart of an owner. (FYI: The nightly cost of my room was around $45/night at the time of this review (2017)-- and you need to pay in cash.)
