A Rat Lover's Tour of the World

"The Nutty Narrows Bridge was constructed in 1963 by a local builder, the late Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross Olympia Way, a busy Longview, Washington, thoroughfare, without getting flattened by passing cars. Before the bridge’s construction, squirrels had to dodge traffic to get to and from the Park Plaza office building, where office staff often left out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. During a lunch break one day, the safety of these squirrels was discussed and the bridge seemed the best solution. With City Council approval, Peters and a group of associates installed the Nutty Narrows Bridge (its name referencing the much larger Tacoma Narrows Bridge). Squirrels were soon using the overpass to cross the road safely. Due to decay, the bridge was relocated in 2007 to its current place between the Civic Center and R.A. Long Park over Olympia Way. Witnesses have reported seeing young squirrels being taught by their parents how to use the bridge. If you drive around the residential area there, you will also see other squirrel-bridges near Lake Sacajawea." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Exactly what you'd expect! There was also a wooden squirrel carving in the park and a 100 th anniversary train with some interesting information placards. It's across from the college, nice area. We spent about 30 mins in the park feeding squirrels, checking out the train. Across the street the dental office had done some community outreach and had various paintings in the parking spots which was fun to look at as well.

What a fun little area to explore the fall foliage! Just a nice neighborhood stroll and spot the squirrel bridges.

We actually came to Longview specifically for this bridge. Those who have seen it are now howling. It's unique & the adjacent park explains the "this is a weird town, right?" impression for those who've never been.

Seems like something you'd find in Portland... I'm not sure what this cities fascination with Squirrels is but there are a few bridges around town. Fun for kids!

Yes it really was a bridge over a main road in town for squirrels to use. Just had to see it. Was worth a short trip out of our way. Also was near the site of a historic meeting about the division of the Oregon Territory.

Fun little stop on a road trip! We saw 3 total suspension bridges in the neighborhood. Park with squirrel statue has a big green area and a locomotive. Big, shady trees make for a great picnic spot.

Homage to an ingenious thinker who liked rodents with fluffy tails. Large wooden squirrel by locomotive has plaque with the basic story. Turn the way the squirrel is facing and walk to intersection. The Nutty Narrows is overhead.

Not much to say, except this is apparently the world's only squirrel bridge, which is pretty neat. Also a squirrel statue to commemorate the man who did things including making this squirrel bridge. Check it out if you're in the area!
