Established in 1889 by British tea planters, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) is one of the oldest and most prestigious golf institutions in Asia. Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, the club sits at an elevation of approximately 1,890 meters (6,200 feet), offering a cool, misty climate that has earned the region the nickname "Little England." The Course The 18-hole, par-71 course spans roughly 6,399 yards and is renowned for its technical difficulty rather than sheer length. The layout is a classic parkland style, characterized by: * Narrow Fairways: Lined with towering eucalyptus trees, elegant cypresses, and dense acacia shrubbery, requiring extreme precision off the tee. * Natural Hazards: The terrain is naturally undulating, featuring water hazards on six holes and the iconic 9th hole "Island Green." * Deceptive Greens: The small, fast greens are composed of a mix of local and blue grass, protected by strategic bunkering that punishes wayward approach shots. Atmosphere and Amenities The clubhouse is a "living museum" of the colonial era. With its timbered interiors, vintage memorabilia, and cozy fireplaces, it transports visitors back to the 19th century. Members and visitors can enjoy traditional high tea on the veranda or retreat to the bar and lounge, which maintains a strict smart-casual dress code. Beyond the course, the club offers: * Accommodation: Four distinct wings of guest rooms ranging from the historic Colonial Wing to the modern Green View. * Facilities: A pro shop, billiards room, gym, and a restaurant serving both local and international cuisine. * Accessibility: While it is a private club, visitors can obtain temporary memberships to play the course and use the dining facilities. Surrounded by lush greenery and cool mountain weather, the course is known for its narrow fairways, mature trees, and classic British colonial charm. While course maintenance can vary at times, the overall atmosphere, peaceful environment, and rich heritage make it a memorable destination. It’s an excellent choice for golfers who appreciate tradition, strategy, and natural beauty over modern resort-style layouts.

Rude staff. We wanted to play golf and explained that it was our first time and that we wanted a master class. After the payment, it turned out that we had only paid for the time and had to pay again separately for the lesson. It was unpleasant that we were not informed about this in advance, so we canceled the booking. As a result, a staff member (not all staff, only one man) was rude to us. He literally said: “Don’t come next time. You should have money to play golf. You wasted my time.” I do have money, but I definitely won’t spend it here 😕

Not a good experience.We booked the night here as it seemed such a lovely old traditional building and a step back in time,it certainly was but not for any good reasons. We were warned at check in that it took 5 minutes to get the hot water through to the bathroom, we never had hot water so cold showers only. It's cold at night here, bedding was insufficient and no heating in the room. Dinner was not what we ordered and then we were overcharged as the menu was incorrectly priced and they refused to honour it. Couldn't wait to check out.

Our office recently had a fantastic trip to the Nuwara Eliya Royal Golf Club for a dinner. the Club feels like a journey back in time. The historic clubhouse, with its colonial charm and ambiance, is a true highlight. It's the perfect place to unwind after a round of golf, with a cozy bar and beautiful view. The club's facilities are great for a group. The cozy and classic atmosphere of the clubhouse was excellent for our dinner night, The buffet was a highlight, offering a good variety of food that everyone enjoyed. The combination of its historical charm, natural beauty, and accommodating service made our trip a memorable.

I really didn’t expect to find such a golf club — it feels like stepping back into the colonial era. The staff seem to have been there for many years, keeping the traditions and history alive. It’s a wonderful place not only to play golf, but also to relax: you can enjoy a quiet meal, grab a drink, or even play a round of snooker. Definitely worth a visit to soak in the unique atmosphere.

The course is very well maintained and has a lot of different obstacles, I lost 5 balls in the first 4 holes. Buy more balls if you are prone to hitting in the trees. For the €80/€60 you only get the green fee (permission to play 18/9 holes) you DON’T get balls, tees ore clubs. A caddie is included within the greenfee price. Don’t forget a shirt with a collar because you need one to play. If you don’t have one you will have to buy one for minimum €25,-.

Lovely setting and I heard the course is good. I had gone to their Cafe for a tea and found the service average and coffee was poor. Food menu looked totally old world.
