Our Favorite Newly Added Places Across Africa

"In 2007, Rwanda’s parliament had the highest female representation in the world at 48.75 percent. But that equal representation wasn’t trickling down to women in Nyamirambo, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the capital city of Kigali. In response to the gender-based violence, discrimination, and gender inequality they were facing, 18 women came together to create the Nyamirambo Women Center (NWC), a community space with a mission of combating these prolific issues. Today, Rwanda retains its place at the top of global female parliamentary representation at 61.25 percent, and the NWC has evolved into a self-sustaining vocational and educational community center that supports more than 50 families. Women in Rwanda are known as umutima wa murugo, “the heart of the home,” and were essential to rebuilding the country in the aftermath of the Rwandan Civil War. After the horrific 1994 genocide, during which between 800,000 and more than one million people were slaughtered, women were estimated to make up around 70 percent of the population. The NWC follows that tradition of women-led solutions, evolving from a care center into a small business cooperative with the Umutima (heart) project, founded in 2013. The initiative supports vocational training in craft making and tailoring for women in the community. Clothing, home decor, and accessories are handmade out of kitenge fabric, banana leaves, sisal plant fiber, palm leaves, and more. In 2014, NWC founded a community library with books in Kinyarwanda, English, and French to encourage children’s literacy. The center also holds classes in English, reading, computer literacy, sewing, and weaving for adults. Umutima members can access workshops on mental health, women’s rights, and nutrition. For tourists, the NWC offers guided walking tours of Nyamirambo led by members of the Umutima cooperative. For $15 (plus an extra $3 for lunch), participants learn about the neighborhood, visit two mosques, tour a hair salon, and learn to pound cassava. Guests can also elect to take lessons in cooking or basket weaving, each for the same price. All profits go right back to running NWC and paying the wages of Umutima cooperative members." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Why Kigali, Rwanda, Should Be More Than a Layover Before Your Gorilla Safari

"Founded by a group of women in 2007 to address gender inequality in the workforce. The cooperative’s boutique sells scarves and handbags made from colorful kitenge fabric and traditional woven agaseke baskets, and offers walking tours and weaving classes."

How to Save Money & Visit Rwanda on Budget (Updated 2025)

"Located in Kigali’s Muslim neighborhood, I found the Nyamirambo Women’s Center to be an artisan cooperative and travel company that supports local residents and offers city tours and activities like basket weaving to see the area through a local’s eyes." - Matthew Kepnes

The walking tour is fabulous....highly recommend! The work the centre is doing is admirable and life changing for many women across Rwanda. We were a party of 4...adults and teens... duration was perfect for us. Learnt lots about Rwandan culture and history. The lunch was very tasty and it was interesting to get an insight into local home life. If you are looking for a walking tour if Kigali please support the NWC by booking a trip! Much better value than private tours, whilst supporting the amazing work they do.

Contacting them was easy and fast. I booked the walking tour, which I enjoyed. Someone said in one review that "random places" have been shown but for me it also had the charm of getting to know the area and normal life. The shop had cute things and I bought a skirt. They are helpful, but I still felt the ladies in the shop to be a bit cold (Angel and Mary were great though). The lunch was amazing. I would do it again. I was done with tour and lunch at around 12.40 pm.

If you want to learn more about Rwandan history and Kigali specifically, you should definitely take one of the tours or courses offered. Very informative and it contributes to a good cause. And the walking tour includes delicious lunch! The crafts on their shop are top, I left with a huge bag of very unique presents. Recommended.

Fun tour! We enjoyed the local lunch. But our favorite part was looking around the shop and getting some one of a kind pieces.
