Of the places we tried on Nyhavn, the iconic canal waterfront, I feel like this restaurant actually provides decent food for the asked price. Which is more than can be said for a lot of restaurants in the area. To be fair, this is a SUPER tourist hotspot and the prices of all the eateries lining both sides of the canal reflect that. Their portions are lovingly large, and I would recommend trying their stegt flæsk (Crispy Pork on the English menu), which is apparently Denmark's national dish.
Nyhavnskroen is a lovely, little renovated inn turned restaurant that serves classic Danish dishes to cater to the tourists that want to eat while looking over the canal and foot traffic. We were told by our waitress that the building doesn't have air conditioning but sitting next to a window on the second story kept the temperature comfortable. Available seating includes the 1st and 2nd story of the building itself as well as the outside patio, which has a band playing during comfortable evenings. Seating inside and out is pretty intimate, which my dad personally found a bit small. When we were there, it had a very lively atmosphere and the staff was lovely if a bit absent for us, the lone diners on the 2nd floor while everyone else was outside.
We were actually steered towards Nyhavnskroen with the recommendation to try their smørrebrøds (open-faced sandwiches), but I didn't seem to be available at the time. I ordered the Crispy Pork, which I later understand was the classic stegt flæsk of crispy pork belly, white potatoes, and a white sauce with parsley. I preferred it with the mustard they provided. The pork belly wasn't so much tough as it was very crunchy, and I initially had to work out how to really get my teeth into it. Once I got the hang of it, I found it pretty tasty. We found the other two dishes we got (the weinerschnitzel and the fried fish fillets) to be okay, but the Crispy Pork/Stegt Flæsk was what we collectively thought to be the most worthwhile.
Overall, I would recommend this place if you really want to eat along the Nyhavn. Our entire group had a lovely time there and the building itself is nice in that old, historic way. I think it's a bit pricey, but I also think they're one of the more worthwhile options, having gone to some of the other surrounding eateries later. It was a sweet experience for our first real night in Denmark.
