Very nice place with traditional dishes... May be not the best for vegan people or for those on diet, but the price quality ratio is good, also because the portions are generous!

We had a delicious meal there. Ordered fish soup, bread and olives as starters, which „unfortunately“ made us almost full. The main dish was pretty large, too (at least for us), but very delicious😋.

It's decent enough. Have had better portions with lower price in the same area in Aveiro. Food was a little bit salty - attempted to charge for bread that was not touched and served without consent. Sea food soup was delicious and the Sangria was good, although frozen fruit was used rather than fresh. 3.5/5

An excellent lunch in this small restaurant. A super friendly owner and great food. Well worth a visit.

The lowest reviews for O Batel are accurate regarding the service here. The owner literally threw me out of the restaurant for ordering octopus salad and not a multi-course meal. I also ordered a beverage. I explained that I might order something additional afterwards. (I was not feeling well and wanted to test my appetite.) He became incensed, parading me through the restaurant as he shouted that I should go "order a snack at a bar... this is a restaurant, we serve food." How ridiculous and humiliating. I have never been treated like this -- or seen anyone else treated this way -- at any restaurant, ever. The couple who sat next to me were in shock. I hope the owner gets his anger under control.

Came across this small cosy little place in the old Town area. I have to say, MUST TRY, had traditional Portugese prep of curry + Octopus, not had a better meal in many days. A small little place, keeps the charm alive, suggest to check for tables in busy times also coz it shuts in time. A big shout out to Mr. Philip for being a wonderful host.

A small and quality restaurant, beautifully designed. Suitable for a romantic evening. The food is fresh and very tasty. The wine is excellent. Simply great - highly recommend.

Small place in a small alley, very cosy, with very friendly and atencious staff! They have a great choice of typical Portuguese food, done with quality products, very tasty! I would recommend you to have the Batel's codfish, and the cheese pudim as desserts !

Yelp
A tiny cozy restaurant located in a quiet alley away from tourists, yet not far from the town center of Averio, Portugal. The service was courteous, the prices were reasonable and the food was great. We ordered: 3*The soup of the day: ok 3*Queijo Amanteiga: fresh bread, cheese & jelly sauce: good. 5*MEXILHÃO À BATEL- "À Batel" mussels: well seasoned and delicious! 5*ARROZ DE GAMBAS AO ALHO: it was a pot of prawns and bread with dried garlic: there were choices of rice and bread. The portion was big, homemade dish was fresh and good. 5*FILETES COM ARROZ DO MESMO: fillets with octopus rice: octopus was tender and fresh, delicious

Yelp
I rarely post reviews. But, I do believe "O Batel" deserves one. Traveling alone is sometimes difficult to find restaurants that accommodate one. Wandering around old Aveiro I found O Batel in a narrow alley and decided to try. It was wonderful. First and foremost the waitress (Eline, if not mistaken). She didn't push for anything and gave me her honest opinion on the food and the portions. I decided by the "petingas em escabeche" and as a main course on the "açorda de gambas" (shrimp with shredded bread). For the record, I'm originally Portuguese and just love that kind of food. I just can say it was wonderful. One of the best I ever tried. I trully recommend O Batel.

Yelp
We were the only two Asian in the restaurant. we were waiting for 10 minutes but the waiter didn't serve us. He is very nice to all the new customers later get into the restaurant, but only giving us a porker face. I asked him why he didn't serve us but for the later customers, and then he showed me his unhappy face and gave us a menu but never return to ask. It is a racists' restaurant.

Yelp
This is a place where the proprietor really cares about what he serves. We didn't really know what to order so thought we would order a bunch of starters. After we ordered a couple, he gently asked "and for the main course? ". We chose what was perhaps one of the best grilled fish we have ever had. Simple and careful preparation. So good. We ordered the cod in vinaigrette, the sardines in oil and after the gilt-head bream, we needed to try the Romeo and Juliette cake which was an amazing combination of two houses that usually are separate. Guava paste balanced the salt of the cheese perfectly. So good.

Yelp
Looking for a cozy dinner with great seafood? This is place. It seats just 22 people in a room that is designed to appear as if inside a boat. I tried to begin with wine, but our waiter/owner said that I could not order wine until we had made our food choices. (Do not attempt to bypass this rule.) Vinho tinto - Quinta de S Lourenço, 2013, Bairrada, €13.50. Tight at first, but then opened up with the air and was fruity. We ate the Arroz de Marisco for 2 persons. Fabulous. A hot bowl of rice and seafood stew. The aroma was enticing. The stock was rich. We loved this dish. Sobremesa - Chocolate cake with red current sauce. Port (10 anos) and aguardente. A perfect ending to a perfect meal. (Felipe did offer me a free glass of the local moonshine. If you like paint thinner, this is for you.) + Wi-Fi + Credit cards + Black Cloth napkins + Black table cloths + Proper flatware for each dish. + Excellent service from Felipe (sp?) €63.60

Yelp
We made a little side trip to Aveiro from Lisbon. Not sure where to have a nice dinner, we decided to try this place. We were pleasantly surprised; this place exceeded our expectations. We started with some bread and some cheese, which was really good, but a bit of a mistake, because we filled up on that before we got to the main course. For the main meal, we ordered the dourado and the sole. Both fish were perfectly prepared and served with some delicious roasted vegetables. It was a superb meal, which we accompanied with a nice bottle of white Portuguese table wine. The wine in Portugal is so cheap and good, you can't afford not to drink it. We finished with some coffee. In the US I would have expected to pay upward of $100 for a meal like that, but the total price was less than 50 euros. Amazing! I might add that the service was very good - friendly and efficient.

Yelp
Very cozy fish restaurant in the traditional local Portuguese style. A lot of wood, you almost feel like in a big sailing boat. The waiter stops to chat a little to you and he gives good suggestions. Extremely tasty bacalao under a layer of onions and spices. The vegetables as side dishes are at least as good as the fish. Be sure to take one of the open local white wines. You can trust the waiters suggestions here!
