In london for a week on business and brought wifey because it's her birthday this week and I can't not bring her when I'm going to London on her birthday. Saw on the Book of Faces that an old friend from Wales was going to be in london through sunday night and doing a show and since we were getting in sunday I knew I was gonna have to make it out there and see him perform. We got to the pub and asked about food and the lady said straight out that they did pizza but it wasn't very good and we'd be better off hitting up one of the Portugese restaurants down the street, so we took off exploring while waiting for the show to start.
We passed a whole bunch of them up before settling on this place, lured in by the relatively large and diverse menu and the display case in the front full of tasty bite-size desserts and savory pastries. The restaurant is surprisingly large inside and has two distinct dining areas in the two storefronts it occupies. The right side is mostly the deli and casual stuff while the left side is more traditional sit-down place. This is obviously a Portugese restaurant for Stockwell's large Portugese community, almost no one inside was speaking English and our waiter was clearly more used to people ordering in Portugese. I'm sure my American Accent didn't make things any easier for him but he was very friendly and we worked it out.
While we browsed the menu they brought out a basket with a few kinds of bread, some butter, and a plate with two kinds of Olives (pits in so don't bite down too hard!). The lady ordered a very simple plate with slices of tomato, avocado, and fresh mozzarella and I ordered .. .well I don't rightly remember the name. but it was awesome. It was a steak, medium well done, with a slice of ham on top of it and an easy over egg on top of that served with rice and french fries (no, not chips. Chips are made from whole potatos and served skins-on in wedges. These were clearly american-style french fries). The fries were great, the perfect balance between soft inside and light and crisp outside and were amazing dipped in the gravy from the steak. The Rice was cooked with olives in and was also great and also improved by the gravy. As for the steak/ham/egg centerpiece, well it's not a combo I'd have thought of but it's a combo I'll be testing out in my own kitchen for damn sure when I get home. The flavor combination was really good and the slight saltiness of the ham brought out the flavors in the steak and egg.
If I lived in the neighborhood I'd follow the locals example and make this my regular spot. Love this place.
