We were in Lourdes taking the waters with the folks, who aren't very mobile.
That's a bit of a challenge, since it's basically impossible to drive in the town: they change the direction of the one-way streets every two weeks to address merchant complaints and make it more "fair". This, however, effectively defeats mapping apps, and you will spend time driving in circles if you decide to force the issue. It's a really clever way to cut down on in-town traffic, actually!
The restaurants in the hotel district just outside the Sanctuary are what you would expect of tourism-based businesses catering to often elderly pilgrims from all over the world: a lot of mediocre, lowest common denominator food. I figured we had to just deal with it, since the actual town is up a hill and a bit of a stroll--not really that far, but a world away if you have mobility issues...
Fortunately, we discovered that there's an elevator in the street that will whisk you up to the level of the cemetery, rendering the town a reasonable walk away. Dad always had a fascination with the Basque, so we thought we'd give O Piment Rouge a shot. And I'm so glad we did!
The servers just had to be the owners--no employees could be so solicitous and friendly. And the food was just a delight: fresh; unusual flavors and combinations; lovely presentation. Offering a jar of piment d'Espelette on the table didn't hurt matters, either!
