Martha is an excellent host. She puts her guests right at ease and the atmosphere she creates is welcoming. We stayed in one of her main house guest rooms and they are dated, however clean and comfortable. Those 4 or 5 rooms share a bathroom, but the price reflects that. Oak Gables also has several suites for rent and those all seemed full of repeat guests. Beautiful location!

My husband Fred and I fell in love with Oak Gables and Martha Scudder the first time we visited almost 20 years ago. We have stayed in 2 rooms in the B&B, then we stayed in the guest wing a couple of times. Finally we fell in love with the studio. This property is very special to us. We love sitting outside and watching the river and the birds. I learned how to play ping pong in the boat house down by the river. In the evenings we would walk down to the town for dinners. Once we saw a fox sleeping on the side walk. The real star of the show is the proprietor, Martha. She makes you feel like family. We have loved all of our stays there. The only thing we have not done is rent the cottage with our grandchildren. This is everything a Maine vacation should be. Once we watched the Perseids Meteor Shower on the lawn. It’s a special kind of magic.

The best B&B in all of New England! Martha is the most gracious and kindest host one will ever come across. Martha felt like family to me by the time I left. Also, she made the best breakfast that was filled with great stories and laughs.

Oak Gables is set right on the Demariscotta River and it is hard to imagine a more perfect setting. We stayed in the main house in the Maple Room, which was beautifully furnished with antique furniture. Martha was an absolute delight and we enjoyed each morning's breakfasts and chats - a lovely way to start each day. Martha went out of her way to make our stay as lovely as possible. It is an easy walk into the little township where we found numerous excellent places to eat each night. We had a wonderful stay and would love to return.

I stayed at Oak Gables for a weekend in July and loved it. Martha is a very kind and welcoming hostess, and I fell in love with her little dog Dickens. My room was clean and pretty and had a good air conditioner. Martha made sure I had gluten free items for breakfast, she made me special gluten free pancakes which were great. I didn't use the pool but other guests were enjoying it. I enjoyed talking with other guests and chatting with Martha in the afternoons for a bit. I hope I'll get back there.

We recently stayed for 2 nights in the main house at Oak Gables with another couple and were thrilled to have the entire house to ourselves. The owner, Martha Scudder, was so welcoming and entertaining and made us feel right at home. She prepared a delicious breakfast each morning and even worked around our schedule so that we could catch an early ferry the day of our departure. The beds were comfy and the shower had excellent pressure that I wish we had at home.||The Damariscotta river is visible from the beautiful property and there's a lovely pool to enjoy when the weather is warm (which unfortunately it wasn't when we visited). ||Staying with Martha at Oak Gables was like visiting a warm and extremely peppy Grandma and her furry (but very quiet) pup, Dickens.

My October '17 stay at Oak Gables was as pleasant as my last two stays there. ||This trip I stayed for the first time in the Guest Wing......a bright, delightful room with kitchen & full bath, and a beautiful view of the Thomaston River! ||Martha is the perfect hostess....welcoming & gracious! ||I highly recommend Oak Gables and the surrounding area for your vacation.

I picked out Oak Gables because of the swimming pool. As it happened, we were too early in the season - but to be honest, we really didn't miss it. The house (and other accommodations) are set in lovely grounds, by the side of the Damariscotta River. Plenty of tranquility, birdsong - and conversation with Martha, the irrepressible owner, aided by Dickens, her four-legged side-kick. Our room was very comfortable. The shared bathroom might be a problem for some - it didn't bother us since we were the only people staying in the house at the time. All in all, a great place to relax.

Yelp
We have been coming to Oak Gables for several years now and there isn't a more hospitable hostess in mid-coast Maine than Martha Scudder. She has created a community of visitors to the area on 10's of acres of beautiful Damariscotta riverside accomodations which, ch are extremely cozy. If you are staying for a few nights or weeks, she has a family cottage, two apartments and several rooms in the main house which are appointed for ease and comfort. The price is very reasonable for the kind of access you get by staying just a short walk from the center of town and main street crosses the river with views of the harbor. The town of Damariscotta offers many dining, shopping and art establishments as well as a playhouse, movie theatre, library and parks. We stay here each year for at least one or two weeks and make it our base for our vacation. We come from San Jose Ca, to stay at Martha's and we love it! If you are housekeeping, the cottage, studio and RiverView appartments have all the accouterments for making a few meals, surfing the Internet or just reading on the porch. Each is outfitted with super comfortable couches, chairs and recliners. When the sun sets, reflections from the river glimmer and floods the abode with dancing light. We customarily do a seafood pasta while playing some italian opera or Andrea Bocelli on the iPod. Then we uncork a nice red and basque in the quietude of the evening. A series of serene and beautiful times to be had in this idyllic spot in Maine.

Yelp
Very comfortable and attractive inn in the heart of Damariscotta. Martha Scudder is a great host and I really enjoyed my stay. Beautifully situated with views of grounds and the river. Rooms were comfortable and well kept. Bravo!

Yelp
I spent one night at Oak Gables & felt very much at home. It was clean & comfortable & the grounds were beautiful overlooking the Damariscotta River. The owner, Martha Scudder & her dog Dickens were very hospitable & welcoming. Her scrambled eggs were the best. I would come back.
