Oakley Diner – Oakley, Utah - Gastro Obscura

"Anyone alive today who grew up in Middletown, Rhode Island, probably ate at Tommy’s Deluxe Diner. From 1953 to 2006, the iconic stainless-steel Americana food-temple served generations of good folks from the small New England beach town. If any Rhode Islanders care enough to wax nostalgic over the french fries and shakes of their youth, they’ll now have to go to Oakley, Utah. What’s now the “Oakley Diner” was manufactured for and displayed at the 1939 World’s Fair. Themed “The World of Tomorrow,” the fair forecasted trends in home appliances, entertainment, and food service. The eatery, a 16-foot-by-60-foot specimen from the legendary Jerry O’Mahony Diner Company, featured green Italian marble countertops, Tiffany glass clerestory windows, and hand-laid quarry tile flooring. It was bought shortly after the fair and moved to Fall River, Massachusetts, where it served as a functioning diner for 14 years before being sold again and moved to Rhode Island. In Middletown, the diner would stay in Greek immigrant Tommy Borodemus’s family for four generations, becoming somewhat of a local landmark. When the family sold their property to a Tim Hortons in 2006, the diner changed hands again, though this time its new home wasn’t just a state away. In 2007, the diner was transported from Rhode Island to Utah. Due to its size, however, the haul was forbidden from interstate highways. The several-thousand-mile backroad journey entailed state police escorts and pilot cars, but upon arrival in a small Utah mountain town, the historic diner found a loving home without any damage to all of its beautifully maintained original furnishings. The Oakley (formerly Road Island) Diner now offers Utahns classic diner fare with an eye to the upscale. Standard burgers, fries, and shakes grace the menu, though Asiago dip, crab cakes, a codfish sandwich, and a trout almondine make comparatively star-studded appearances. “This Is Not A Fast Food Diner,” reads the menu. It is, however, certainly a well-traveled one. None" - Collector of Experiences, emilythefairy1, Mama Shotts, e emilythefairy1, OliverWDahl, lukefater, kjmoore12, dunedaink

This was my first time eating here and I came because my son in law recommended it. We were not disappointed. I got the meatloaf sandwich. It was amazing. Tons of flavor!! My daughter got the Oakley burger and loved it. The fries were some of the best fries I have ever had. Definitely a great place. It is crowded at least in Labor Day weekend but it only took us a group of four 10 minutes to be seated.

This is the first time I have been to this diner since the name and ownership have changed. The restaurant is really beautiful and fun - inside and out. We tried the Reuben sandwich with chips, the fish and fries and the Patty melt. Everything was good but we liked the fries better than the home made potato chips. One minor complaint concerned the lemon that came with the fish. They gave me thin slices but it would have been much easier to add lemon juice to the fish if they would have given me wedges. Prices seemed a little high but I understand we were also paying for the unique nostalgic atmosphere. Service was friendly and kind.

Stopped by here after horseback riding. Cute little diner and the breakfast burrito hit the spot! I love their outdoor seating area and it’s dog friendly. You can tell the staff really cares and provides quality, family, friendly service. Make sure you stop by the back dining room for the jukebox and historic surprise on the way!

Google
They’ve taken an American classic and revived it into a double wide with a drive thru on the lower level, and revived the dining experience in this charming town. We got the Belgium waffle and the spicy chicken sandwich. The waffle was very tasty, and the side of bacon was a small 3 pieces. I was expecting fruit on the side as well, but none came. The spicy chicken sandwich was a thigh, and not a breast. So the meat was thin and a little chewy, but the flavors were great.

Such a hidden gem. We were so happy we drove by this place and had to stop. We eat a great lunch it was so good we placed another order to go. So we could have it for dinner since we were staying over an hour away. If your every in Oakley Utah or it's surroundings area you must stop and take it all in. Five 🌟 from me.

Mediocre food, the Benedict came out cold, best part was the jalapeño biscuit...but had to ask for butter about 3x. Also maybe don't reprimand or talk bad about employees right next to/in front of guests.

Google
They now have lots of new indoor seating in the back and it’s beautiful, so we enjoyed that today at lunchtime. We have not been there for a few years and they have really invested in the place and made it look so nice. The service was excellent, and the food was delicious, we really enjoyed our lunch there today on the Fourth of July.

Sat at the counter on a traditional diner atmosphere, beautiful! Very busy on a Sunday around 1 but service was excellent and people entering were seated quickly. Had the Italian Hoagie with house made Malt Vinegar Chips. Delicious! Highly recommend!

Yelp
It is always a pleasure to come to Oakley Diner. The staff is always so welcoming and eager to make your experience the best it can be. The food is always delicious and served quickly. The portions are generous and you will not leave hungry. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The Oakley Diner is a real surprise and a local gem. The food is stellar, prices great, and the staff is friendly. The restaurant feels like a step back into the 1950s with beautiful decor. The country fried steak is flavored perfectly and the club sandwich is delicious.

Yelp
Was very disappointed when the Rhode Island diner closed its doors. Heard it was finally sold and would reopen which was great news. We stopped by for dinner , Prime Rib, mashed potatoes and asparagus. It certainly did not disappoint . Stopped in again for breakfast. I had cowboy Benedict and hubby had smoked salmon Benedict. Both were delicious. Service both times was great! A most welcome addition to Oakley .

Yelp
As residents of a cabin up the canyon, we have been anxiously waiting for this diner to open. We were bummed out about Road Island diner closing. We actually went in with low expectations so we weren't disappointed. I will say that it's diner food, but a little more pricey than normal. We came at 2:30 in hopes to beat the crowds, we sat within 5 minutes, staff is friendly. We sat in the back which has a slight "cold" feeling. Food arrived quickly. We decided on the Messy burger, BLT, Fish n chips, and the all American burger. Messy burger - the burgers are on the smaller side, which is why a double patty is a must. The mushroom gravy was actually delicious, and the bun held up nicely. Great little burger. 4/5 The pork belly blt- the pork belly was sweet, almost candied, a good portion, crispy on the inside, soft middle. Pork belly just doesn't have the flavor of bacon. After eating this I would prefer some thick crispy bacon instead. The sandwich was dry. It needs some more spread, possible garlic aioli? 3/5 Fish n chips - were decent. My kids liked them, but maybe a little too crispy, and not enough fish, to much batter to fish ratio. 3.5/5 The sweet potato fries were everyone's favorite! Get them! All American burger - added caramelized onion and mushrooms. They don't ask you how you want your burger cooked. They smash the meat on a flat top, leaving you a crispy salty crust. It's a good thing they are doubles, because the meat is thin. I loved the burger. The only downfall was they gave me very little mushroom and onion, if I'm paying extra, I'd like extra. Also, they left off the lettuce and tomato, which I did not request. 4/5 We want to come back and try the breakfast. One thing I will add, is that I miss how Road Island had pies and treats in the glass case when you walked in, and you were like, I'm definitely saving room for pie!! I want that back!!

Yelp
Ordered the Sunday prime rib dinner and baked Mac & cheese. Excellent service and excellent food. Creamed horseradish was excellent. Side of mushroom gravy excellent. Mac and cheese excellent. Mashed potatoes, made from scratch, excellent. Asparagus cooked perfectly from raw excellent. This diner is worth the drive and detour and has great hours for those visiting the many lakes of the Unitas.

Yelp
So my wife and I were out working on our property in Oakley. Hot and tired we headed to the diner for a milkshake. Walked in, sat at the counter and were completely ignored. There was a waitress standing two feet away who was obviously done with her shift as she was counting money to cash out. Directly in front of us was a young lady polishing silverware. We sat there for over five minutes with neither staff member even acknowledging our existence. The one waitress that appeared to be working the floor was to busy to even come over and offer water. Some basic training in courtesy and customer service is sorely needed. A simple "hello" goes a long way.

Yelp
First thing is plenty of parking! And easy to get in and get sat. They have gluten free options which is nice for a little place like this. The fish and chips were incredible. I love how the fish was in strips like in the picture cause then it wasn't oversaturated with oil and easy to eat with braces. That tartar sauce though..... upon first glance I knew it would knock my socks off and it did! Perfect balance of tangy and sweet and silly and Mayo. I licked that cup clean. Super delicious. I LOVED the topper of a mini PB&J sandwich on the milkshake. The peanut butter milk shake was perfectly flavored. Not too rich or heavy. I ate some of my sons chicken tenders and they were deliciously breaded. Service was just average. Nothing above and beyond which as an easy going person, works for me!

Yelp
Excellent Breakfast on a Sunday morning. We went in with low expectations knowing they are just 2 weeks past the opening day. Service, food and ambience were amazing. Elizabeth took good care of us and breakfast was only $24 for 2 (without coffee). We'll be back.

Yelp
What a gem to find this after snowmobiling! Do not miss the Bakery below, where we were fortunate enough to find one dollar donuts! Love the whole vibe that this gentleman has created for this community. Bravo!

Yelp
What a wonderful remodel and revamp for this classic diner! The menu was full of classics and new items (burgers, mac & cheese, omelettes, avocado toast) as well as a nice selection of bakery items, coffee drinks, and ice cream dishes. Daily specials include soup, cake, and pie of the day. Service was friendly, fast, and efficient. Prices were reasonable.

Yelp
Lauren had just started the day we went in and she did a great job recommending the Oakley burger. It was delicious! My husband and I shared that and the sweet potato fries . We also had the apple pie alamode and it was soooo good. The place is beautiful now that it has been remodeled.

Yelp
Hidden gem in the middle of Oakley, Utah! Wow, this place exceeded my expectations when I decided to stop in on my way from Smith and Morehouse reservoir. Food: Pork belly BLT was amazing. Mouth watering pork, fresh veggies, and yummy bread. Service: Professional, friendly, and quick! Restaurant: Clean, supper classic diner layout! Completely remodeled recently!

Yelp
My husband and I were so excited to see a thriving business in Oakley. The diner itself looks great, clean and sparkly. Everyone who was Caucasian got to sit in the front while myself and my family (Hispanic decent) got to sit in the back of the restaurant behind closed doors. so that was a weird experience. The server was not very attentive or kind. The soda machine wasn't working and apparently they knew that and brought me a soda anyway that was flat. No carbonation at all. When I told the server she was like "oh yeah, I heard about that" so... side eye. Okay let's get to food.. I got the Oakley Burger and I'm not sure what type of drought Oakley may be going through but that burger was DRY. (Sweet potato fries were amazing though) My husband got the Messy burger and they should have called it the disaster burger. It claims to be topped with mushroom gravy but all my husband got was brown water and not a single mushroom in sight. Our kids got the chicken tenders and those were 10/10. The kids meal was accompanied by a pretty solid ice cream sundae. Overall I would rate my experience 2 stars and in the future, I'll stick to just driving past and admiring how good the outside looks.

Yelp
Brought friends from out of town on Sunday and we absolutely loved it! Amazing atmosphere, great burgers and phenomenal service by our server Ronnie! We will def be back!

Yelp
Loved the food at the diner! Quick service, awesome location, and lots of options on the menu. We tried the burgers, Mac and cheese, chef's salad, chicken friend steak, and shakes.

Steve C.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant! The Cowboy Benedict was amazing. It could be called a sausage lovers dream! The poached eggs on top were perfect and the jalapeño biscuits have just the right amount of kick, not overwhelming. I'll be back for lunch!

Yelp
Best chef's salad in summit county! Great value, portion size and quality. The Ruben is also 5 stars!

Yelp
My husband and I visited the Oakley Diner this past weekend. We were so impressed with how great the ambiance was! I ordered the Oakley Burger and my husband had the Reuben. Wow. Both were fantastic. The burger is massive and messy (in the best way possible.) The reuben wasn't dry, with great pastrami and flavor. Our food was much more flavor elevated than expected from diner-level food. We decided to round out our meal with a strawberry milkshake and cookies and cream milkshake. Both were great and easy to drink through a straw like a proper milkshake. We went during their soft opening and were expecting some hiccups but were pleasantly surprised to get quick, friendly service with food on the table much faster than even some restaurants that have been open for much much longer. I will be making the trek up to Oakley again for another fun dining experience.

Yelp
This has some of the best burgers in the state!! And the service is excellent! It's such a cool atmosphere with the converted train car into the restaurant. I highly recommend it!

Michelle G.

Yelp
I am a long time summer resident in summit county, about 15 minutes from the diner. My family and I were so excited to see this diner renovated. Today was our first dining experience in the newly renovated diner. Unfortunately, the food is still awful and the prices are twice as high now. Unbelievable, they spent all that money to renovate but apparently no money left for a proper Chef or line cooks who know what they're doing. What a total disappointment!!! Service was friendly but inattentive to our needs. I'll never eat there again. They've had my second chance twice now. I would really love to see this place hire a proper Chef to bring this landmark into the light!!!

Rebecca B.

Yelp
I love this little diner! The servers are so friendly and the food is better than typical diner food. The vibe is old school diner minus the grease and gum chewing waitress. There is a bakery, soda shop, coffee shop and donuts downstairs around back. Worth the drive for a fun little day trip or date night!

marilyn d.

Yelp
Had breakfast this morning. So good . Country skillet was amazing . Pancakes fluffy and yummy ! Great service . So Sparkly and pretty ! Great ambiance !!! Prefect start to the day !

Jeff P.

Yelp
In Oakley to pick up some Rodeo Tickets today. The woman at Ken's Cash Store suggested I try a loaf of the round sourdough from the Oakley Bakery. Wow was it delicious! Rivals any sourdough I've ever had, the crust was done but not hard and crunchy, the texture and flavor were delightful. I will definitely be back to the Oakley Bakery, and I will also try the diner next time.

Tania M H.

Yelp
I'm not impressed with this place. Service is questionable. Food isn't good in my opinion. Would really like to see them succeed but it definitely needs work.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so happy the diner is open again. The new owners have done a great job restoring and renovating and it's even better than before! The food was great diner food. The menu is simple but the food is really fresh. You can definitely tell everything is homemade. And don't get me started on the pie!! Soooo good. Thanks for bringing this much-loved diner back!

Yelp
This place is fun and good food. I had the club sandwich and loved it the fries and side salad were great and fresh tasting. Very attentive server and we got free T-shirts because of their Grand opening.

Yelp
My family made the hour drive up to Oakley just to try out the newly remodeled diner. And WOW!! It was SO worth the drive! We all LOVED it! I have 3 sons ages 8-14 and all of them are verrry picky and they absolutely raved about it! Some things I overheard from my kids: "best food I've ever tasted," "life changing," "one million out of ten," and "bussin" - the last apparently being the highest praise an 8th grader can give. My oldest son loved it so much he was like, "Can we meet the chef?" My husband and I were really impressed with the portion sizes and with the flavor and quality. We've been going to the diner for years. But the food now is next level!! It's seriously high class, elevated, 5 star dining in the cutest diner atmosphere. Oh! And the service was excellent too! It's pretty rare for us to find a place that all 5 of us love. But I think I can say with confidence that we've found it in the Oakley diner! My 11 year old said he wants to go up there to eat once a week! I meeeaaaannnn... I'm down! Oh - and just as a funny personal note: when we walked in, my kids were like "Woahhhhh! This place looks soooo cool! Like it's decorated all the way back from the NINETIES!" I was like "Ummm- the 50's boys. The FIFTIES!"

Mark H.

Yelp
We live just up the street. We are so glad to see the diner reopen. We have visited several times. The ambiance is great, the food is also much improved from before. Our only suggestion would be to add more options to the entree menu. Or have specials on the weekends. Other than that we are happy there back!!

Rick S.

Yelp
I love this place, the food, the owners, the staff, and the atmosphere. As a local, it's great to have nearby!

Robert P.

Yelp
Was excited to go to the diner again to see the updates and overhaul. We went there twice. Both times we were not seated or served due to business not operating like a functional business. Issues happen, but quality business do not let that compromise service to consumers. Wasted my time going to this establishment.

Doug M.

Yelp
Great classic diner! Great bottomless coffee, crisp fries. Great service! Kind folks

J L.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place so bad and I am sad to give this review but my food was awful! I have never sent food back in my entire life and I had to send a simple dinner salad back! I didn't dare say anything about the soup I had ordered but it was brought out barely luke warm and tasted like glue. I felt so bad for the waitress because she was doing her best and trying to make things right. I do love the updates they've made and the place looked great! I would go back again to give breakfast a try but the breakfast menu seemed a little limited. I hope they can make some correction as I'm rooting for them to be great!

Nancy L.

Yelp
Great food and service! Traditional diner food with a twist ! Bakery downstairs is an additional bonus !

Rebekka M.

Yelp
Nope. Had high hopes for a nice, new spot for brunch and dinner. Just another burger joint that serves breakfast too. Brunch would be a reach. Have been there twice. Hash browns were cold and the breakfast was average. Went back to try dinner. Dinner was not good. Patty melt was an odd mix of thinly squished patties and cheese. Sticking to Mirror Lake Diner. Don't get sucked in by the pretty building.

Ellie L.

Yelp
Great burgers, friendly, polite and efficient waitress and a Chef who did a special favor for us. It was a warm and inviting vibe and very lively. It is so worth the drive from SLC, once you get off the freeway you can sit back and enjoy the scenery on the ride. I will go back every chance I get and can't wait for the next time.

bryan m.

Yelp
Amazing food! I have been to this establishment 4 times already since it has opened. The staff was amazing, and the food was beyond my expectations for a diner. It's a little hole in the wall that everyone needs to try.

Sydney R.

Yelp
This diner is wonderful! They accommodated my vegan diet by making pasta primavera without any dairy. The servers were on top of refilling our beverages. It was a great experience!

Jeff B.

Yelp
Full Disclosure I'm giving a bonus star because they just reopened and offer the best dining option in Oakley!!! Great ambience of a restored diner (clean and charming) and the food is terrific. We had breakfast: reasonable priced kids meals (the plates were full, I'd almost recommend using a bigger for the kids or bringing a side plat). Adult dishes and options are excellent. We had country fried steak and cowboy egg Benedict. Served warm and fresh and tasted delicious! Their gravy is good, I should have requested a little side. Couple suggestions: have your bus staff check the tables for water refills and any needs (syrup, extra gravy etc). They were busy when we were there.... But I'm a believer in service your tables. Checkin and be observant. The food is excellent as is the environment. Service wasn't bad.... But you can always raise the bar and shoot for the stars.

Sue B.

Yelp
We took a drive up to Oakley to see if the new owners have improved this diner. The answer is no. It's a cool building and very clean, but for what we paid things should have been much better. We had the pork belly BLT and a patty melt. The BLT was paired with a bread that just wasn't up to the task - it fell apart after a few bites and the sandwich was a mess. The tomato slice was pale and sad, which was really surprising given that ripe tomatoes are available pretty much everywhere right now. The patty melt was served on sourdough bread instead of the traditional rye, and it did hold up, but I do prefer rye. The patty was very small and dry, there weren't very many onions, and the swiss cheese seemed like it was processed. I noticed that the menu stated that the other burgers come with American cheese, which is not something that I would expect for the price. The menu also claimed that the patty melt contained 7 oz. double patties, but that's definitely not what we received. The sweet potato fries were good and the regular fries had potential, but were over-seasoned. I was served a diet Coke that was completely flat. The service was friendly and fast, so that was a plus. Bottom line: this place needs to spend a little more money on unprocessed cheese, decent bread, ripe tomatoes, burger patties as large as advertised, and a functional CO2 tank for the soda fountain. We paid $40 for two sandwiches, one soda, and the opportunity to sit in a restored railroad dining car. The food was definitely not worth the price. As for the rail car, been there, done that, don't need to do that again.
