In the US and Europe, it's not a common thing to find good restaurants located in wineries. But in the Yarra Valley in Australia, gourmet food pairs with gourmet wines in restaurants that are operated by the wineries themselves! Our visit to Oakridge was complemented by a three-course lunch in their restaurant with bright, airy windows and amazingly friendly service. The three-course menu came at $85 per person, which seems expensive for lunch, but the quality of ingredients and impeccable, creative execution was completely worth the price.
After ordering, we were started immediately with homemade sourdough bread and house-churned butter with distinct pastural flavors. For our starters, I tried the tomato tart with Jersey milk burrata, which turned out to be one of my favorite dishes. The tart had at its base a crusty, flaky puff pastry, which was filled with a creamy burrata cheese. On top of the cheese were chunks of fresh, seasonal tomatoes, and a variety of herbs for garnish. Eating this dish was like taking a bite of an Australian summer! The subtle flavors of every component melded together, and the creaminess of the cheese, the flakiness of the crust, and the soft bite of the tomatoes made for the perfect textural combination!
For our second starter, we had the beef tartare dressed with garum, macadamia, and green ants. The chunks of raw beef were in a light oil-based dressing, and the crunch of the macadamia nuts and the cracker on top was an amazing complement to the tender meat. Uniquely, the beef tartare was also dressed with green ants from North Australia, and they had an extremely sour flavor, which added the balance of acidity to the meat.
For our entrees, we had the kangaroo loin with onions, blackberries, and mountain pepper sauce, and the meat was perfectly cooked, tender, juicy, and gamey! We also had the roasted lamb with merguez sausage, eggplant puree, and whipped feta, all served over a barley salad. I simply loved all the Mediterranean flavors of this dish!
And then it was on to dessert--the first was a layered cheese "cake" with fillings of chopped nuts, raspberry jam, and chocolate, and on the outside of the cake was a ring of potato chips--what a unique pairing of savory, sweet, creamy, and tart! We also had a dessert of sorbet with puffed spelt, white chocolate, and dried strawberry ringed around the outside. The sorbet had the perfect amount of light sweetness, and the mixture of crispy elements on the outside added a sweet textural contrast.
Overall, the restaurant at Oakridge was an amazing experience, especially complemented by the free tasting of their wines you can get at the bar! The beautiful atmosphere, the delicious, creative food, and amazing service all make this place worth a visit!
