An 8-Day Cycling Adventure From Tokyo to Kyoto

"There were memorable stays in new-to-me cities like Takayama (dubbed 'mini-Kyoto,' without the crowds), where, in the sleek Hotel Wood, you find yourself immersed in the onsen with the same people you've been riding with, except you're all now naked."

The hotel is located in a convenience location and in a quiet neighborhood. We were far enough from all of the crowds but also close enough by walking distance. The room is pretty spacious for Japanese standard. We were also able to organized luggage transport service (Ta-Q-Bin) with Yamato transport that arrived at the hotel 1 day before our arrival. When we got to the hotel, the staff already brought our luggages to the room for us. Additionally, they have other services here that were really useful as well. First, they have washer/dryer that you can pay with either coins or via credit card through an app that you can download on your phone. Each washing cycle is 35 minutes and drying cycle is 30 minutes. The dryer is not strong so you would need at least 1 hour of drying time and you cannot wash a lot of clothes at a time. Second, they also provide breakfast which was pretty good. I would highly recommend staying at this hotel.

Excellent location with easy access to the shopping street, 24-hour supermarket, subway, and bus stop. The room was very clean and tidy, and the front desk staff were professional and helpful. Although most staff members are not Japanese, they speak both Japanese and English. The only minor downside is that it may not be ideal for a long stay due to limited storage space. Overall, great value for money and I would definitely stay again.

We liked this hotel. Very big room with small kitchen, sofa, large TV and washing machine and separate bathroom and toilet. Breakfast's were very good with lots of choice of Japanese and Western food. Only downsides for us was that the temperature is centrally controlled and not individually room controllable and you can't see out or open the window. Convenience stores nearby. 6-7 minute walk to metro.

Really enjoyed our stay in one of the suites. It was spacious, clean and well appointed with a cooker, fridge, microwave and washing machine. Service was excellent and Goto-san was extremely welcoming and helpful. Location was within walking distance to the city sights and dining and shopping area.

Disappointing stay. The level of service at this hotel was terrible. I have uploaded photos of how the housekeeping made my bed daily - yes all they did was pull the blankets up to the top of the bed with the pillows randomly scattered everywhere below so I came back to my room to a mountain of mess everyday. There were two single beds in my room but I only used one since I was a solo traveller and yet they were too lazy to even tidy that one single bed. I had to tidy and make up my own bed daily. In all honesty, out of all the hotels I have stayed at globally (even including cheaper budget hotels) this is the first time I have encountered such lazy and sloppy house keeping. The hotel also provides a “free drink service” which includes coffee or tea in flasks in the cafe area but usually after returning to the hotel in the evening these flasks are already empty and not refilled so there won’t be any. With all the options in Kyoto I would suggest you look elsewhere.

My mom, auntie and l stayed there with a tour group and loved our stay here, if we would’ve stayed here our whole trip but ended up bouncing back and forth to Tokyo for the sake of the airport. Very clean room, great housekeeping, comes with all your toiletries and the room was great. Only complaint is that the AC would lock at 25 degrees Celsius but this may have been user error since we can’t read Japanese and only knew how to adjust the temp in the moment

Nice hotel. What I love the most is the location. Walking distance to nishiki market plus all the other markets. Kamo river. Hotel staff is nice. Speaks English. One negative review is that they only have one washer and dryer - it was difficult to get laundry done. They have a buffet breakfast that you can avail of but again lots of bakeries close by.

Great location — disappointing service. The hotel is very well located, no doubt about that. But unfortunately, the experience was let down by the staff and the room conditions. I had requested a queen bed both in my online reservation and again when checking in. The receptionist assured me that the room had two beds joined with a topper, “just like a queen bed.” That turned out to be false: I walked into a room with two fully separate single beds. To make things worse, the power socket by the bed didn’t work at all — the wiring had been disconnected — and I had to call reception again to have it fixed. For a hotel in this price range, in Japan, where I’ve had excellent stays in similar chains, this felt sloppy and below expectations. A pity.
