"There were memorable stays in new-to-me cities like Takayama (dubbed 'mini-Kyoto,' without the crowds), where, in the sleek Hotel Wood, you find yourself immersed in the onsen with the same people you've been riding with, except you're all now naked."

We really liked this hotel. Family trip of 4 adults. Breakfast is if limited variety, but quite workable. A few Japanese options, and usually an egg dish, maybe bacon or sausages. Some breakfast bread/pastry, cereal, juices, yogurt, and fruit. Surely enough to fuel the start to your day, but nothing extravagant. Overall I was happy with the breakfast.||Staff was 95% fantastic. Only issue we had was that while we booked and paid for fees for two guests per room, we were hit with a "second guest" fee. Honestly that issue was my only real complaint for this otherwise excellent small hotel in the heart of Kyoto. Location is fantastic, easy walk to trains, the market, tons of food opportunities abound within walking distance. The location is the #1 key to why I would stay again. Staff, aside from the one issue, was the #2 best thing this hotel has going for it. Rooms are somewhat small, but not by Japan standards. I would stay again.

Date of visit 2 November 2024 to 5 November 2024 The review reflects my personal experience and honest opinion. Finding suitable accommodation in an unfamiliar area can be challenging, especially with mixed reviews. Fortunately, this hotel exceeded expectations in many ways. The staff were professional and welcoming, creating a warm atmosphere right from check-in. The guy clearly explained check in and check out and even showed us a trick to save money on the buffet breakfast (you sign up to the hotel rewards program for free and the buffet breakfast would be half price). The room was very comfortable, with plenty of room for 2 suitcases and to be able to move around freely. The bed was incredibly comfortable, however, in it own personal opinion, I didn't like the pillows. The bathroom was spacious and the bidet had a privacy function. I appreciated the simple magnet system for room service: “Do Not Disturb,” “Clean Room,”. The hotel even offered free unlimited softdrink (and coffee as well I believe) downstairs in the area. The hotel itself was in a great location, 5 minutes to the train station, 10 minutes to the markets, plenty of food choices around and also family mart and 7/11. Great location. I would definitely stay again when I return. P.S. There is a city tax they impose staying here, was only 200 yen per person per night. P.P.S Loved the massive TV.

Great hotel; however, our room had no view or natural sunlight. It was also very hot at night, even after lowering the temperature to 16 degrees Celsius—no difference was felt. The thermostat seemed to be purely decorative. With a window that couldn’t be opened, sleeping was quite difficult. Otherwise, I liked the room.

Great hotel in a great location. This hotel is handy for all locations in Kyoto, trains markets or shops. The breakfast buffet was lovely, everything you needed was available, cereal,s eggs, sausage, toast or fruit and yogurt. The rooms were clean and quite spacious, the bathroom was amazing. The best part of this hotel are the staff, so friendly and helpful, they really went above and beyond for us to make sure everything was perfect, even down to arranging for a taxi for us and standing outside to wait for the taxi with an umbrella so we didn’t get wet. Their English is perfect and explained everything to us so we could understand. We had an amazing time in Kyoto , and Hotels are a big part of your holiday so this hotel contributed to having an amazing holiday. All rooms seem to be quiet as the hotel is located off a main road so no room noise. If we come back which is probable we will definitely be staying at this hotel. Thank you to all the staff at the hotel who made our holiday so memorable.

I only stayed here one night of the total of two weeks I spent in Japan, but it was my favorite of the hotels I stayed at. The room was spacious! I was solo traveling, so I don't need too much room, but it felt so nice to be in a normal hotel room after a couple of days in a Tokyo room. The shower was great (and should you need it, locks from the inside), bathroom lovely, pjs were great. The staff was really nice, even when I was being an airhead and not understanding them. I wish this had been my hotel the whole time I was in Japan. I'd love to stay here again if I ever make it back to Kyoto!

Great modern hotel in a super convenient location, close to shopping streets and a metro station. The room was a decent size, very clean, with comfortable beds and a large bathroom with a spacious bath/shower. Wi-Fi was good, and the room was very quiet, with no outside or hallway noise. The staff was always friendly, and the free drinks in the lobby during the day were a nice touch. The only downside was that the price was a bit high.

Great hotel rooms! Fantastic TV! However at night the rooms get very hot and you have no control over the room temperature. Staff are very rude to foreigners - our towels were not replaced and I called reception to ask for towels when the guy rudely asked me to come downstairs and fetch the towels (bare in mind - i was already undressed when I noticed there were no towels).

Absolutely loved this place. Fantastic Kyoto location., wonderful service. The rooms were smallish but well appointed. I reserved the deluxe studio with kitchenette. Perfect for two. The staff was very attentive and the hotel breakfasts delicious and a good value. Lots of European guests and a few Americans when I was there.
