The Best Way to Travel Around Southern Africa (Updated 2025)

"As one of the more affordable overland options, Oasis averages about $93 USD per day and offers the standard benefits of overland tours—covered transport and accommodation, little planning, and social travel—while sharing the common downsides of organized tours such as limited freedom, tourist-focused itineraries, variable inclusions for activities and park fees, and occasional ethically dubious wildlife experiences." - Matthew Kepnes

My friends and I have been coming to this bar for many years. It's a small bar with an upstairs sitting area as well as a small outdoor area. I've seen a couple of bands here. This is our favorite place to play darts. Great location in Lakeview district. My favorite bar in birmingham!

Google
Great time with friends here last night. We saw Kingfisher, the band, and had a terrific experience

Nice place to chill and enjoy music.

Google
Ian is the absolute best. He's made our experience over the top every time. Ask him for the cinnamon toast crunch drink, it won't disappoint!

Google
Ian and Riane were some of the best bartenders I’ve had in a long time! Anyone would be missing out not coming and seeing them asap! Thank yall 😁

Jamie L.

Google
Such a great atmosphere and IAN always makes you feel at home when you are there. Get the Hot Dog you will not be disappointed! The best LIVE MUSIC in BHAM!

Google
Really cool bar! Live music and great drinks. 3 stars because the ladies' bathroom door has a gap in it when closed. I worried someone could see me through the crack. Wish I took a photo of it! I'm hoping the right person sees this review, and resolves the issue.

Google
Nice place. Good live music most of the time. Usually not too crowded. You can find young and mature people here. You won't feel out of place regardless of your age. Only problem is to find a parking spot on weekends, but that is the norm in this area of town.

Yelp
It's been a minute since I've been to Oasis. We used to be regulars due to our dart team playing their dart team. Unfortunately, no dart teams play out of there now. I definitely wish they would get new boards. Oasis is a bar that locals visit. They have live music often in the front bar. There is also a back bar and a small outside area. Also, the bartenders are always nice. Oasis is located in Lakeview, which is a walkable area with a great selection of restaurants as well as other bars.

Yelp
The bartender made an accusation, stating that I may have laced people's drinks simply because I purchased shots for others, although I only gave one person a shot. As a Kenyan woman, I took offense to this allegation and assured the bartender that I did not tamper with anyone's drinks. In Texas, where I am from, it is customary to buy shots for others. Apparently, this practice is not common in Alabama, and the misunderstanding resulted in an unpleasant experience during my first visit to the state from Texas. Then claimed that my friend was trying to sell herself and claimed that my gay friend had something to do with it as well .

Yelp
The Oasis Bar is the best bar ever north of New Orleans. in fact it has all the ambiance of any great bar in the Cresent City. I've been a loyal patron since almost the day it opened, perhaps now almost 30 years ago or more. The place is welcoming to all who go there. It has a great owner and general manager and for anyone to suggest otherwise is morally reprehensible. They are straight shooters and believe in strict adherence to transparent business practices. They are such good people that one night, when my ATM hit its limit, they were kind enough to lend me a tremendous sum of money to bail my brother out of jail, secured only by my promise to repay them (which of course I did the next day). I recount this story, but only to illustrate these are special people, and this is a special place that will always be home in my heart. Plus, they have great music, and if you are lucky wonderful hot dogs in the back at more than a reasonable price. I recommend this place without reservation.

Yelp
Live band was wonderful!! Very cool ambience, outstanding service, delightful drinks. The bartenders went out of their way to recommend drinks, refill waters, check in on us when a random patron wandered in and was being kind of weird toward myself and my friend. Darts were fun. Very tasty cocktails and shots. Awesome value. Will definitely be back. Shoutout to Ian the bartender.

Yelp
This is a small bar in an old building on 7th Ave S. It would appeal to some and not to others. If you like bands/live music and a dingy atmosphere this place fits the bill. It is usually not crowded Mon -Thur 4-8 people, usually locals. There is live music almost every night. The music can be loud as it is a small place. They also have 2 dart boards (the reason I go) and the dart league plays on Tuesday nights. Their beer selection is OK but not as expansive as most bars today. They have a small outside area out back for the smokers/vapers.

Yelp
My wife and I went there on a date while we waited on our reservations at both the Birmingham Rage Room and Jack Brown's Burgers, long story short...we had an amazing time. The bartender was accommodating and the TV's and ambiance was just what we wanted. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This would fit pretty closely into the category of dive bar (not to be held against them in any way) Came here on a Tuesday to meet up with some friends that had a dart league that night. Walked in and was surprised to see that my friends and the people they were playing against (2 others) were the only ones in the bar. Staff is friendly and was quick to find out what I wanted. Kind of interesting that the beer tap isn't behind the bar, but in a back room. About 9:00 a local artist came in and started playing some tunes (really not bad at all - too bad there weren't more people to listen to him). Music happens here on a pretty regular basis and from what I was told after work and weekends this place can get pretty crowded. Overall a good experience....friendly staff....good beer....and a good place to hang out! Also, full service bar so you can get mixed drinks if you want. If you're in the area I would suggest checking them out.

Yelp
First time visit. Tiffany was an excellent bartender. Nice decor and location. Had fun playing darts.

Yelp
Oasis is a spot I rarely stop by but I always enjoy myself here. It's quite different than most bars in Lakeview; older crowd, not packed, and a great lineup of live music almost every night. When you first walk in, you notice the bar is a bit small and narrow. Some seating in the front room and at the bar. But walk further back and you'll find an outdoor area that's kinda cool. The bar has two dart boards and they usually have some good sets of darts. They've also got pretty inexpensive drinks! Always a good bottled beer special here. Oasis is a good place for laid back day drinking and a great spot for some local bands.

Yelp
As a vegan, I am looking for 'plant based' options on the menu. When I asked of the chef was willing to accommodate for a vegan option, he didn't hesitate! The chef gave me a thumbs up and I knew I was in good hands. I received the most amazing vegan, plant based option, in the form of a delicious calzone. Would recommend this spot to anyone looking for a good meal.

Yelp
First time coming out to this bar. It was around 8:30/9 pm and they were not crowded at all. I went with some family and I think my favorite part was they had a dart board! The bartenders were really nice. I saw they had a sign up where they have live music on Thursday and Sunday nights so that might be fun to check out. Will most likely stop back by if I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This is one of those bars in B'ham that I wonder why I've been to so infrequently, because I've always really liked the place. It is small and can definitely get crowded on weekends. During the week it's not so bad, though. Sometimes I enjoy going there when it's not so crowded, like early-ish on a Saturday and playing some darts. The drink prices are decent, so that's always a good thing...and I like the bartenders and service for the most part. It has a cool, covered patio out back. The door leading to it was inconspicuous to me at first, but after finding it, I wondered why I hadn't noticed it the first time I was there. Among the Lakeview bars, I'd rank this one towards the top.

Yelp
Oasis is your typical watering hole. Not too fancy, not too divey. Pretty much anyone can walk right in and get a good drink, for a good price, pretty much any time of day. The bartenders are efficient, professional and prompt. The variety of booze is significant. There's a few seats out front where you can hang out outside and watch the people of Lakeview stumble to and from the other bars on the street, and a nice back bar which connects to an outdoor smoking area in the event that your urge to smoke becomes overwhelming. A few drafts that rotate, some dartboards that get a good amount of use, and a very friendly old guy at the door who checks ID's and collects the occasional cover charge when certain bands are playing. They've got a live band almost every night, so if that's your thing, you can always find it there. And in most cases there is no cover. Its a clean, tidy place with a good number of seats, so other than the most crowded of nights you can usually find a spot to sit down and enjoy a drink while listening to the band. Most definitely a stop if you're hopping bars in Lakeview. Just a no frills, friendly, sometimes lively place where you can get what you'd expect from a good neighborhood bar without a lot of fuss. 4 stars instead of 5 for me because I'm getting old, and sometimes I wish some of the bands would turn it down just a little.

Yelp
A sort of after thought bar tucked away in the lakeview district. Mainly an older crowd that frequents the place which I appreciate and a few younger folks that file in from time to time. Outside patio and back bar pretty cool. Bartenders pretty cool as well. A venue for the drinker who knows what he or she wants. They have specials usually and most liquors and bourbon available. Prices reasonable. What I enjoy about these type of establishments really is the laid back vibe you get when you come. Places like this are what make a city a city in my opinion. Again nothing fancy about it or newsworthy but it serves its purpose of a place I can go to when I want to grab a beer of a whiskey and just chill and people watch. They also have live music daily.

Yelp
I went to Oasis for my first time the other night, and it wasn't anything spectacular, but I definitely wouldn't write it off my list. There's a $5 cover to get in. The crowd was an interesting mix of mid to late 20 year olds trying to relive their glory days of college and then 40 year old men just dancing/drinking too much... But overall, drinks were cheap and our bartender, Brigs, was nice and hardworking.

Yelp
-You will smell like an ashtray when you leave. +$2 stellas on fri/sat nights +free darts +/- live music...good band but way too loud to have any conversation.

Yelp
I can't believe I had not been to this bar in a couple of years. It's a small place but the people are friendly and great vibe. They have acoustic several nights a week. If your looking for a cool spot to have drinks and chill this is a good place. Also it's in the popular Lakeview district.

Yelp
An average corner bar with good drink prices. i had to knock off a couple of stars for: A) having a pretty nasty bathroom. B) having bands. why knock off a star for bands? Well, it's too small to have bands, thus causing the place to be to loud to be in.

Yelp
Great place to pregame for the fighting and fat girls down the street at nana funks. LOVED IT! XOXO P.S. Loved it at nana funks more P.S.S. because the girls are way to hot at Oasis, Nana Funks has attainable chicks P.S.S.S Nana Funks is a great place to pick up fat chicks, don't forget to hit someone on the way out

Yelp
I went to Oasis last night for the first time and I don't know why I've never been here before! When I walked in, I instantly noticed the nice decor and warm environment. There are two dart boards in the corner, which I enjoyed playing. It's a bit of an older crowd, but everyone is nice. I'll probably be back here!

Yelp
This is totally a late night dive bar. I've been here many times and always have a good time. They get good bands. There's an odd smoking room out back if that's your thing. Go meet new friends and enjoy a cold one.

Yelp
Came for a BHam weekend trip and came to Oasis. We bounced around town a bit looking for a good place to hang out and play some darts and ended up here. Best setup we encountered for darts and overall very friendly and welcoming place. Seemed to be a mixed crowd in terms of age, plenty of young people and some older folks too. Overall Oasis has a nice pub-like atmosphere, decent beer prices, and good service. Our first night we had a good experience and the bartender recommended some other spots to check out around town. We came back a second night and the bartender remembered us and was welcoming - they also had a great cover band playing. If you're looking for a nice bar with a laid-back atmosphere, I would definitely check them out!

Yelp
I am not sure how I have never been in this bar. A group of friends and I were walking past it when we heard live music. We all decided to stop in... and to our surprise..... this place is awesome. The bartenders were awesome, the music this night was great.... I honestly can not wait to go back. It reminds me of a neighborhood bar with an awesome patio area out back.
google avatar

Jeremy E.

Yelp
Good "neighborhood" type bar. The drinks are OK...nothing to write home about. The covered patio out back is really the only reason to go. They do have live music often, even though the place is way too small for it.

Yelp
Good quick hit bar-somewhat near the airport. Very laid back.

Yelp
I think Oasis can be a great spot to go early in the night on a Friday or Saturday.. After about 11 it starts to fill up with drunken frat types and the band will eliminate any type of conversation. Happy hour usually draws and older crowd (30+) then it gets more diverse the later it gets. the staff is ALWAYS friendly and cool. Also the outdoor covered area has a cash bar, fooseball, and the ring on a string game. I always take friends here when they come visit but usually leave when it morphs from relaxing dive bar to packed music hall.
