The historic Oatman Hotel is actually a restaurant and ice cream/souvenir shop. It's best to break this one down:
RESTAURANT - The service was verrrry slow. Yes, I should have been very aware that as one of two places to eat in a town that draws many tourists, service (as in what I'm used to at most places) that I take for granted can be hard to come by. The restaurant was nearly filled up by 11:30am, and it took me 20 minutes to get seated. For whatever reason, the host didn't see me and seated people who came in after me! But I didn't want to raise hell since it looked like they were very shortstaffed. I don't know how many people were in the place but it was getting packed. I wasn't really hungry, so I got the chili cheese fries plate, which was great. Server was very friendly and he apologized repeatedly for my wait. Wish I woulda gotten the burro ears, as it is their specialty. (No, they are not real ears!)
HISTORY - But on the flip side, it is definitely worth stopping to take a look around inside the place. It was originally called the Durlin Hotel, and it has stood in Oatman since 1924 (well, actually it was built in 1901, but was destroyed by fire in 1921 and eventually rebuilt). Oatman has its own interesting history, with this building being no exception. This is where movie stars Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon after getting married in nearby Kingman, Arizona. You can still view their room upstairs, which has been restored to what it may have looked like in the late-1930s. It is said that their giggles haunt the building at night, as well as other spirits. Gable actually returned to the hotel in later years to play poker with the miners.
So about the "dollar bills thing": it was common for miners who drank at this place to leave their dollar bills on the wall and ceiling with their names on them just in case they were short on cash. The tradition still continues today, with hundreds of $1 bills all over the place! Yes, I left my mark. I even saw $5 and $20 bills on the wall too. Don't be that person who steals them.
