Oaxaca Free Walking Tour

Raul is simply the best guide for a walking tour of Oaxaca city. He was so knowledgeable not just about the city but local culture and language. He took us to interesting places without any pressure to buy anything which I really appreciated and was always open to answers any and all questions. I feel so much more able to appreciate this place thanks to all information I learned from Raul on this trip.

We had a wonderful Oaxaca City walking tour with Raul! Couldn’t recommend more highly… we learnt a lot about history, mezcal, local city sites and much much more. We are now enjoying some mezcal infused with chocolate at our next destination. Thanks Raul!

Our tour guide was Raul and he was amazing. He was so nice and knew so much history of Oaxaca and of Mexico more generally. He was very flexible with his schedule depending on what we were interested in, and he actually took us on a much longer tour than expected! We happened to ask some questions about chocolate and he then made sure we visited a local chocolate manufacturer where we got to taste 10+ different chocolate items for free. He showed us tons of beautiful street art and gave us tons of recommendations. He was so nice and quite funny, and is simply a wonderful tour guide. If you decide to go on walking tour, I highly recommend that you ask for him specifically as your guide!

Josue is an amazing guide! He told us lots of interesting things about Oaxaca, of its history, people, culture and food, along the walk. It was almost three hours but didn’t feel that long at all. He has amazing passion for this tour and I hope you’ll like it as well.

We had the pleasure of having Raul as our tour guide today. He led our group with interesting information, humour and insight to this incredible Oaxacan culture. I valued his insight in everything he recommended and showed us - from the market to the cacao and the multigenerational weaving family. Everything was very thought out and encompassed what a tourist would appreciate in experiencing Oaxaca.

We did the amazing „classic food tour“ with Raul in Oaxaca and couldn’t be happier! He took plenty of time for us, listened to our wishes, and guided us to hidden spots we would never have found on our own. The variety of local cuisine was truly impressive – everything we tried was delicious, whether vegetarian or a bit more adventurous. Raul is extremely knowledgeable, and you can ask him about much more than just food – from culture to history and daily life in Mexico. Thanks to him, we got an authentic and rich experience. Absolutely recommended for anyone who wants to explore Oaxaca’s culinary and cultural side! P.S.: Come as hungry as you can, we are still full!

This free walking tour was absolutely fantastic and very interesting. We discovered many beautiful places and hidden corners of Oaxaca that we would never have found on our own. Our guide Laura was incredibly warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. She shared so many fascinating details and stories about both the history of Oaxaca and its current social and cultural life, which made the tour feel very personal and engaging. You can really feel how passionate Laura is about her city, and she created such a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the tour. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone visiting Oaxaca — and if possible, definitely ask for a tour with Laura. You won’t regret it!

David was a great host and gave us a great welcome introduction to the city. Highly recommend, particularly in the first couple days in town to give better context and appreciations for the city.

This 2.5 hour walking tour offers a leisure walk around centro of oaxaca and history and interesting facts of Oaxaca. Our tour guide Dijan (sp?) was Mexican but spoke fluent English. He was casual, helpful and offers many good facts and tidbits on Oaxaca..and if you want more info, he was happy to give you more information as well. At first I wasn't sure if the 2.5 hours was going to be too long for me, but the tour went by fast and I learned a lot more about life and living in Oaxaca than I ever did before joining the tour! It was casual, friendly and enjoyable. Everyone in the same walking tour group stayed the entire 2.5 hours tour! Definitely check this tour out. The tour was very available...meaning..they offered multiple tours a day...so...take some time out to learn more about this wonderful city in Oaxaca!

Outstanding way to arrive in Oaxaca. This tour was informative and fun. Our guide Dijan (sp?) was fantastic. Approachable and interesting. Highly recommend.

My friend and I greatly enjoyed this 2 1/2 hour FREE walking tour of the central area of Oaxaca city., which is probably the best deal in town. Our tour was conducted by the delightful Raul Valencia, who had spent some years in the U.S., so spoke flawless English. We could not have had a better tour guide. Raul started the tour at 10a.m. at Teatro Macedonia, an historic building from the early 1900s, then walked us at a leisurely pace through town to the Santa Domingo church, and then on to many other important landmarks along the way. He kept a running commentary going, touching on many topics. An aside, that because a large group had gathered for the tour on this particular morning, there were two guides and they broke up the group into two groups, so ours was about a dozen people. I actually don't want to reveal too much because it's more fun to have it unfold for you. He answered every question and knew the answers to every question, which is even better. He showed me a side of the city and it's unique history, political and ethnologically, that I would not have seen on my own, even though we have already paid for some of the tours offered here and we have been here a week. I recommend this fun experience unreservedly! (And I presume it goes without saying that Raul makes his living based on the tips that he earns at the conclusion of the tour.)

Raul was so informative and the tour was fantastic. Lots of off the path stops and tons of recommendations. Well worth it and don't forget to tip, especially because it is free!

Our guide Abril was enthusiastic and gave us lots of background on recent history, art, politics and people. Showed up on time walked about for around 2.5 hours. Very enjoyable tour!

Raul was a fantastic tour guide...we saw parts of Oaxaca we probably wouldn't have seen on our own. He was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. Charming man..this tour is a must do when In Oaxaca

This is about as good as it gets for walking tours. Raul offered a low key, but continually interesting stroll though the city. We had been here a few days already, but even in the places we had visited he added new insight and perspective. There were several folks in the group of ten that had just arrived and I felt as if was a great introduction to the history, culture, cuisine and life of Oaxaca. The pace of walking and information were just right. As most or our Spanish was a little compromised, it was terrific that Raul's English was superb, this coupled with his gentle sense of humor, clear love of the region and encyclopedic knowledge made for a wonderful afternoon.
