Where to Stay in Oaxaca on Your Trip (Updated 2025)

"Housed in a restored colonial mansion right in the center of town and just minutes from the main square, this large hotel has a small pool and a rooftop restaurant serving delicious traditional food. The rooms are homey and clean, if a little dark and dated, but the beds are soft and it’s quiet so you can get a good sleep; the staff are friendly and it has the best location of all the hotels on this list." - Matthew Kepnes

Great hotel with amazing location in the middle of the center of Oaxaca city. Rooms are clean and bed is comfortable. Showers should be repainted, but overall everything is clean

The hotel is very charming with the historical relevance as it was once a nunnery. The room we stayed in had a very high ceiling with wooden rafters and closet with robes, an iron, and a TV with both English and Spanish stations. There were steps in and out of the room and into the bathroom that might be challenging for some. The breakfast was very authentic and tasty. The service at the small bar was spotty, and the washcloths weren’t replaced in the room, but those minor details did not detract from our stay. There was music until late in one of the courtyards that may have bothered some guests.

Very small rooms with a tiny bathroom, hardly space f toiletry bags. We had no warm water in the sink and other issues with the room. Location is great, staff friendly snd lobby/ entrance in good shape.Meals can be taken outside on the rooftop.

My recent experience here was truly excellent, and I highly recommend it! First and foremost, the location is incredibly convenient. It's situated perfectly, making it easy to access all the major attractions and amenities I needed, whether by walking or public transport. This made my visit so much more enjoyable and stress-free. The hotel is very affordable and I felt I received incredible value for money, which is always a huge plus, especially these days. The staff is very welcoming. From the moment I arrived, they made me feel at ease and were always ready with a smile or a helpful suggestion. I had a minor issue during my stay (not their fault, just an unexpected snag), and they handled it with efficiency. They help me resolve it quickly, ensuring my comfort was their top priority. Their proactive and helpful approach turned a potential hiccup into a testament to their excellent service. Overall, a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a well-located, budget-friendly option with genuinely wonderful and capable staff. I'd definitely return!

I couldn’t have asked for a better hotel experience than Oaxaca Real. The location is perfect - steps away from everything to do and see in Oaxaca central, from the cathedral and museum of Zapotec culture to the restaurants and cafes. Our stay was delightful - the staff was hospitable and helpful with recommendations for day tours. Our room was beautiful and comfortable, cleaned every day, and overlooking the pool. It’s so nice to be able to hear the kids play in the pool and to get so much sunlight. Highly recommend and I would stay here again.

The hotel looks beautiful, but the rooms are tbh pretty bad. The ventilation does not work at all so it is very humid and warm in the room, even when it is 15 degrees outside

Google
Location and friendly/helpful staff!! Staff made our stay memorable and many thanks to them!! Central and walkable - the 3 huge wedding dolls make it easy to find the hotel. Best of all, the owner is local so know that my money support the community. Love the complimentary tea/coffee in the AM and filter water during the day so can fill our bottles…an extra sustainable touch.

Google
Hotel overall was good! Location is absolutely perfect if you want to stay in the downtown area. Service was outstanding, everyone was very helpful. The room was nice; super simple and the bed was super comfortable. The only downfall of being down town is that it gets loud because of the bar around.

Yelp
I am not sure where to begin. I booked this hotel through Traveluro. I booked a superior room, requested a quiet room. The room provided was facing the pool and right next to the restaurant. I wish that was the worst part. The room was not clean, there were hairs on the bathroom floor at check in that were not mine, the shower only had cold water, the wifi did not work. The sheets did not smell clean, the towels were gray. I left. After repeated attempts at contacting the hotel and Traveluro, still no refund or solution to the problem. Had I been traveling on a really tight budget I would have been out on the street. The staff was incredibly rude and unhelpful for the hotel and the booking service. DO NOT stay here.

Yelp
A few weeks ago my family came over to visit me, my aunt, uncle and my two cousins (10 and 16 years old). It was a shame that I could not put them up but they like a bit more luxury anyway. They found this hotel on booking.com and it was a good deal; smack in the centre, with swimming pool and a good price! Before they came I went to check it out and asked what time they could access their room because they were arriving at 8 o'clock in the morning and would be exhausted after the long flight (from England). They told me that they could organise to have a room ready at 11ish. When they arrived I helped them to check in, they arrived early so had breakfast in the hotel restaurant and waited. Eventually they got their room key at 3 o'clock, the normal time of check in. This annoyed me a bit because the hotel was empty (low season) and they had promised me otherwise... The rest of the stay was excellent! They (and me also) really enjoyed the pool. You can order typical food but also the usual food in the restaurant which is good. They have a garage to park your, in this case: hire, car. And the staff is really friendly but they hardly speak English. Because of my experience with the check in and the lack of English speaking staff I gave this hotel 4 stars.

Yelp
Mediocre hotel at best. Hotel is clean and basic. Be advised the beds are as hard as rocks. Water pressure in the water and sink varies quite a bit. Customer service can definitely be improved at check in and check out as well. I had to switch rooms with 20 minutes notice due to "fumigation" and was not given prior notice and this was a horrible inconvenience 4 days into my stay. Location is good but take a look at other options as well.

Yelp
We booked a STANDARD room which was offered at a higher price than their DOUBLE room. When we checked in were told standard meant whatever they had available. We were given a DOUBLE room which is not what we paid for. We were tired and decided to stay. Unfortunately, the beds were rock hard and there were no power outlets in the room. One of the windows would not close so it got a little cold at night. The noise also kept us up until about 2am. If you are looking for a little relaxing, then this is probably not the place. The location is okay. Not far from the square, but still a walk. The entrance and the patio of the hotel is beautiful, but not worth being uncomfortable. The bathrooms are below standard. Maybe that's why they don't include pictures of them. We booked through SnapTravel, so the manager said there was nothing they could do. We called SnapTravel, and they said there was nothing they could do. We were forced to find another place to stay. We asked for a refund for the nights that we didn't stay, but we were not refunded. This is by far the worst hotel experience we have had in Mexico, and we travel there a few times a year. Don't waste your time. There are many other beautiful boutique hotels in Oaxaca.
