On the Grid : Oberhafen Kantine

"The little house sitting on the quay wall is the oldest and last harbour canteen. Build in the 20s, dockworkers came here to get their morning coffee or afternoon lunch. It had a moved history including a surge, which left the whole house on a crooked angle. This gives you a subtle sense of defying gravity once you enter. Inside you find a cozy environment with a bar, booths to sit in and slanted lamps (well, everything else is slanted). On the menu you find a selection of regional and seasonal dishes, also with several vegetarian options, all prepared inhouse. Fresh ingredients are a must, so they come from carefully selected local farmers with ecological farming. But even if you are not hungry, you can go by for a coffee, tea or drinks after a stroll through the Speicherstadt. The second floor is decorated more fancy and is available for reservations." - Boom

This is an iconic place that I imagine primarily tourists come to - or locals on bikes who stop by but only for a beer from what I observed. The staff is very nice but I would say overworked for the number of diners. I ordered the herring housewife style which was OK. However, the cherry crumble cake was AMAZING!!!! Super delicious.I wolfed it down so fast, I forgot to take photo. I did, however, get a pic of the ashtrays on the table which are really. unique.

I found this cafe based on reviews and it was a 30-minute walk from the hotel. When I entered the restaurant, there were 5 empty tables inside and outside too. I told the waiter that I wanted to eat - he replied that everything was reserved and there were no seats. I went outside and called them on the phone and reserved a place, returned a minute later and they offered me to sit at any table. There was no answer to my question why you refused me a minute earlier. During the 40 minutes that I ate, no clients came. The food is delicious. The situation is disgusting.

Really nice building. Food is tasty. You have to go on weekdays otherwise this place is overrun. Indoors very loud.

Very nice and special place, extremely tilted floors, traditional Hamburg food and drink. Very nice service personal. We had a great time

Google
Very nice little restaurant Staff is friendly and take time to explain how things work. Concept is interesting : you order the main part of your dish (hamburger, pulled pork one for me) then you wait to be called to get your plate at the grill. There you can add your side dishes and topping. Food is well cooked and taste good. Side dishes are very good and fresh (for vegetables) Recommandation : yes and worth to walk quite a few to go there on purpose. Make a reservation if you go on the rushing hour as it is a small place and can be easily full.

If you like authentic local cuisine in a traditional environment, but without the smell of the places that have simply not adapted to the present, this is the place to go. A bit off the beaten track, but not too far away from everything. In the harbor area, under a railway bridge, you’ll find this picturesque spot. All good local. Very tasty.

Google
The food was decent, but the hamburger was a little tough (although I'd rather overdone than underdone) and the salad was soggy with dressing. But overall I enjoyed my visit. There's a good selection of food and beer and it's an interesting building with outdoor seating. However, there was a strong smell of sewage while I was there. I don't think this was any fault of the establishment, it seems to be a problem in the area. It made sitting outside on a hot day not so lovely, unfortunately.

Google
They serve typical Northern German food. Service was great and fast. Note: Seem to get busy very quickly, it is better to make reservations.

Yelp
Came here after a long walk around the city. I sat outside on the picnic tables and ordered the seasonal special... a hamburger patty with white asparagus, potatoes and a big boat of hollandaise. The best hollandaise I've ever had. The meal was delicious. Very friendly people that come here and the locals chatted me up even though I was a tourist. Hamburg is great

Yelp
This place is absolutely overflowing with character. Sandwich underneath the tracks, at some point most of the building slumped and settled leaving it all on an angle. The walls are safe, but look like they are about to fall over and are at a significant angle. The floors also are at an angle and depending on where you're sitting you'll find yourself leaning against gravity. You can even put an empty bottle on the table and watch it roll. The food is traditional northern German, with a slightly artistic flair. It was tasty and full of flavor with hearty portions. The burger was recommended by the waiter and was one of the more unique hamburgers that I've tried. It is a very small venue, with ample room outside for seating during summer.

Yelp
The food here was pretty good, the service was decent, and the building itself was pretty cool to look at. The salmon was pretty good. It wasn't amazing, but it was one of the better ones I've had in Hamburg. The meatball was tender and juicy. Very good. The side salads were also very good, as was the sweet mustard that came with both the salmon and the meatball. The starter we got (a traditional German dish of ground of herring - I can't remember the name) I didn't find particularly good, but the person I was with enjoyed it.

Yelp
Leaning house of awesomeness! This is one of those hidden-away pearls of Hamburg. Sadly, now that Hafen City has been planted, this may become a bit less hidden in the near future. The food, in a word, is KILLER. Try the Hamburg Hamburger... sample the potato salad, or venture into the unknown with the Hamburg Weißwürstchen, either way you will not be leaving hungry or poor. The service is friendly, but very Hamburg... so if you are an ass, they will treat you accordingly. The location is small and very much heeled over like a ship at sea, frozen at a 15º -- while some people find this to be charming... others, as I recently learned, simply can not eat in such an environment. The music is pure Bert Kaempfert classics from 1950 - 1970. If you don't know who Bert Kaempfert is, shame on you! Now go Google him. In summary, if you are in this area and are looking for a place to eat. This is the place. If you want to grab a bite before heading off to the Elbphilharmonie... well, you have time... but this is a good place to spend it.

Yelp
I decided to check this place out because it was featured on Lonely Planet's "Top Picks" for Hamburg. I relied heavily on their recommendations throughout my time in Germany, and they did not disappoint with the exception of Oberhafen Kantine. We arrived around 6pm on a Saturday which you think would be the beginning on the Saturday night dinner crowd. We walked inside and there were maybe 2 tables of diners and the other tables were marked reserved. The staff was very rude and told us we could not take any of those tables. I asked about the outdoor seating, which was completely empty, but I don't think they understood what I was asking. We sat outside for a moment while we tried to come up with a new dining plan. A minute later the hostess walks out and writes on the chalkboard that the patio was closed, in a clear attempt to get rid of us. Maybe this place is more receptive to locals, but my experience as a tourist made me feel completely unwelcome. If you're an English speaking tourist in Hamburg, I would avoid this place entirely.

Yelp
Eating here could be classed as an adventure. Firstly, finding it, is rather awkward due to the huge amount of building work going on in the nearby hafencity and the fact it is hidden under a railway bridge. Then theres the quirky 15 degree interior, which looks and feels like you are sliding slowly into the Elbe canal. Added to all this, is the randomness of the seating arrangements, where you could be sitting next to anyone, (and your food could be sliding slowly down the table towards your new friends). However, these can all be considered plus sides as it is a completley unexpected, and quite wonderful experience. The food is excellent, the chef knowing pretty much all theres is to know about original German food, the atmosphere is very friendly (perhaps because its so small and cosy) the drinks are good (standard), and the cost is reasonable. If you fancy a bit of an adventure and are looking to experience something a little different, then this is definately the place. The only downside is that its best to go when its busy to get the true feeling of the place.
