First thing's first: the entrance is confusing. Just look for the entrance marked with 1 Place Ville Marie, and use that one. Once you get inside, ask someone how to get to the observatory. You have to take the escalators down, walk through a maze, and then take two elevators up.
While the building itself doesn't look that tall, it still offers 360 views of Montreal. The cost is $15 for students (it says ages 13-17 but the employee said any student ID will work) and $19 for adults. Because of this higher price tag, not a lot of people visit the observatory. We went at around 11 am and there were only four other people walking around.
Definitely a one-time thing for me, but I'm glad I got the chance to visit.
