Observatory House, perched on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, holds a significant place in the city's history and architecture. Dating back to 1776, it is the oldest surviving building on the hill. Designed by James Craig, the visionary architect behind Edinburgh's New Town, the house was initially conceived as part of an ambitious observatory project. However, due to funding issues, only this Gothic-style tower, reminiscent of a fortress, was completed. For a period, it served as the "Old Observatory" and accommodated resident astronomers before William Henry Playfair's larger City Observatory was built nearby in 1818. It played a role in early time-keeping for the city and port. After falling into disrepair and being listed on the "Buildings at Risk" register, Observatory House underwent extensive renovation. It has since been repurposed, notably as high-end holiday accommodation, with profits supporting Collective, a contemporary art organization based on the hill. Its historical importance lies in its connection to early astronomy in Edinburgh and as one of the few surviving examples of James Craig's architectural work. It offers guests stunning panoramic views of the city and a unique historical retreat.

The Observatory house is the oldest surviving building on Calton Hill. It is not open to the public as it is a rentable property or just for school visits. I wish it was open to the general public when not used to see the inside. It sits on an older circular gothic tower and has a jaded history. It has changed physical form and ownership many times over the years until taken underwing by the Collective. In the small building next to it, houses the Politicians Clock. Neat historyon that as well.

Great place to see a spectacular view of Edinburgh. So many great places to check out around here, great photography area for those who like to take great photos and landscapes. We wondered up here not really knowing what to expect and were blown away. Not a bad walk from the city center. Tons of really amazing architecture. The people that we ran into were a mix of locals and tourists.

It's situated in the centre of Edinburgh. It offers a very nice view over the city. A very good place to visit with friends, family. Best to visit on a clear sunny day. Here you can find a small restaurant, toilets. You can visit the Observatory House.

The Observatory House in Edinburgh is a historic building located on Calton Hill. It was originally constructed in the early 19th century to house the City Observatory, which was established to study astronomy and meteorology. Designed by architect William Henry Playfair, the Observatory House is an elegant neoclassical structure that served as the residence for the astronomers and staff working at the observatory. It features classical architectural elements such as columns, pediments, and a dome. The City Observatory played a significant role in the advancement of astronomy and meteorology in Scotland during the 19th century. It was equipped with telescopes and other instruments for observing celestial bodies and studying weather patterns. Today, the Observatory House is part of the Collective Gallery, a contemporary art space that hosts exhibitions and events. While the observatory itself is no longer operational, the building remains a cherished landmark on Calton Hill, offering visitors stunning views of Edinburgh and the surrounding area.
