The Best Places to Go in Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific in 2026 | CondĂŠ Nast Traveler

"Ranked among the best public courses in the Asia–Pacific and stretching along King Island’s wild western edge, Ocean Dunes is a sea-sprayed, wind-lashed golf experience that in late 2026 will unveil a new restaurant and clubhouse plus 64 sleek, glass-fronted on-course rooms and suites with uninterrupted ocean views." - Chloe Sachdev

My first but certainly not last experience on this wonderful layout which provided a great challenge and some of the most amazing coastline views anywhere. The Jones family offer EXCEPTIONAL welcome and service which, in my view, is by far the best I have received in any travel situation. For the first time player I would recommend touring the course (by cart) before actually playing and this is despite being provided with a hole by hole guide which is excellent in its own right. We played twice in much different weather conditions - pray for sunshine and light winds😂 as it’s a little more enjoyable

Ocean Dunes is a very challenging golf course set on the beautiful eastern coastline of King Island. I have just turned 60 and decided to walk the course. I’m glad I did. Cam (Head Pro) and his wife, Amanda, were very welcoming. They were very friendly and helpful. Weather conditions were dry with 35km/h westerly winds which is the main prevailing wind off the Bass Strait in these parts. I’m a 10 handicap and played off the second hardest tees (Blue) scoring 100. The front nine were particularly testing especially into the wind. If you miss the fairway, you are into thick fescue and you will do well to find your ball. Not only that, you have venomous snakes to contend with as well. Two were seen on the day. I lost four balls on the F9 and scored 58. It is really important to have a conservative strategy and be prepared to play some of the par 4s as a par 5 especially in to the wind. Keeping the ball flight low is key around here. Low punch shots and stingers are the order of the day. The greens were firm and consistent if a little on the slow side. The wind not only moved the ball in the air, but also on the greens too. Another tip, if you do find your ball in the rough, consider taking an unplayable. It is that tough to move your ball forward. Green fees are AU$205 and this course is worth every penny. It’s a real challenge and I suggest that you accept the odd high score here and there, and just enjoy the day. The B9 is much easier with wider fairways and some large greens. I scored 42 which I am really happy about. There are no members and I only saw three other groups all day. And this was a Saturday. Clean and place to a club handle is currently in place. The course has recently been taken over by a Melbourne consortium and the future is looking promising with a new clubhouse underway ready for 2026. Bring plenty of balls because you will lose them. Take your time and appreciate the beauty of this impressive golf course.

Would give it 10 stars if I could. Have never received customer service like we did at Ocean Dunes. The family who run the club could not be more helpful and welcoming. They did everything they could to make our day as good as they could. That’s all before you get onto the amazing golf course. It’s a real test of your golf game. The greens were amazing to putt on and rolled very true. Could not recommend playing Ocean Dunes enough.

This is the golf course to play on King Island! Firm, fast and a delight at every turn. So many interesting and playable holes that I didn't want it to end. Yes, they have rough and they have snakes, but it was just so much more FUN than Cape Wickham. Highly recommended and Amanda and Cam who currently run the operation are a treat too.

Cameron, his family and the rest of the team are so hospitable and their welcome is just the start of what is a fantastic golfing experience. The Par 3s are the standout of the course and are arguably even better than Cape Wickham’s. A few of the fairways are currently in bad condition due to recent storms but all in all, Oceans Dunes is a first class golfing destination.

Tough course, particularly if it’s windy but well worth the effort in getting down there to play. Staff are absolutely amazing. Amanda and her team went beyond expectations and made us feel so welcome and appreciated it’s made coming back a priority. Could not recommend this place and its staff enough.

Beautiful course. We played during mid October and weather was great. Fairway condition was not 10/10, but the scenery was amazing.
