Great location, plenty of fun activities to do on site. Complementary breakfast was yummy with a great variety. We stayed in on of their pet friendly rooms and we enjoyed walking the paths on the property. Beautiful view of water! Would definitely go back!

Just had wonderful family reunion here. Like the reviews state, the property is dated and major renovation starts in Sept but the rooms were clean, a little musty smelling but we were 10 feet from the water, in a beautiful shady area. What does one expect? The kids all loved it and there was so much to keep them entertained from dawn to bedtime, we rarely left the resort. All personal we were in contact with were very pleasant, professional and very helpful and accommodating. We are totally hoping to return next year after the upgrade. Mini-golf was the biggest hit after the beautiful and clean pool. Breakfast is just wicked awesome, as they say in ME.

Loved our stay. We stayed two nights. It was rainy and cold for the entire time we were there, and we still had a great time. The room was very clean and comfortable. We kayaked everyday and saw harbor seals. It was so peaceful. We played putt putt and ping pong. Great location. Breakfast was good. It was a nice touch. When we checked in we were in a room where we could hear the neighbors, I texted the front desk and they moved us. Very friendly staff. Would 10/10 stay again.

We had our annual family get together. We had 17 people. We had a great time. Luckily the weather cooperated. Spent lots of time at the pool. We were happy to see the pool updates. Especially the handicap lift! My wife is disabled and was perfect for her to get wet and cool off in the pool to be with family. We went kayaking, saw seals an eagle and osprey. Looking forward to next year to see all the upcoming remodeling. As always the breakfast was excellent. The staff is always friendly. Special thanks to Stephanie for everything. She was very helpful as usual. |Thanks|Harris family

Google
Rooms falling apart horrible. Lights burned out. Walls cracking peeling gaping holes, dirty. Service non-existant. Buffet breakfast attendant has a tip jar but no greetings or smile to diners. She doesn't clear dirty dishes or refill promptly. There are many activities, however, the place is so run down that the ping pong paddles are broken, the outdoor fire pits do not have any wood, nor is there any fire starter or paper provided to be able to get the fire going. When I talk to the manager about the state of disarray, he stated that there are signs everywhere describing a renovation in progress. But there was no evidence of any repairs- bicycles were rusty no supervision of boats or oars or life jackets like a slum landlord owned resort. The best part was the scenery and overlooking the water

Google
We had read the previous reviews and knew the facility was a little dated. What we found was a facility that had been neglected. The approach drive was filled with potholes. Our room had a stale aroma and the tub had mildew around the edge. The windows for our water view had a haze from lack of maintenance. The photos were misleading at best. The breakfast was good and what I would expect for a complex like that, but the plates were all paper and the nice little place settings in the photos were no where to be seen. Boothbay Harbor is a nice area and we had a good visit, but will not be going back to Ocean Gate “Resort”.

Google
Yes, the place might be on the older side, but the rooms are quite nice and roomy. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. Not like some other places that are nicer. The staff was very friendly and anything you needed you got. Breakfast was very good and a lot of food. Over the Fall and through the winter the whole place is getting a complete reno. Hopefully the prices won't go up to much. Give it a try, don't let resort through you off.

Google
Website is deceiving as the rooms look nicer than they actually are. We arrived late booked via chase travel and no one was working and no key in the mailbox. We called and quickly received our key. Got to our room and the screen door fell off on the way in. No switch for the outdoor light, room smelled extremely musty, spiders, sink barely drained, no soap in the dispenses, mold in bathroom ceiling. The grounds were nice and scenic, but the rooms were not. The renovations and status of the rooms should be clear on their website, or they should expect more poor reviews and unhappy guests. I think they are justifying the high price for the amenities of the place (kayaks, small pool, mini golf, etc). Breakfast was not anything too appealing. It is a nice location and I am sure it was great and it may be worth the cost after the renovations?

Yelp
Access road is long and not paved with terrible ruts. No lighting at night Setting is rustic with beautiful views Resort is clean

Yelp
Fabulous ocean view rooms though a little old and run down. They worked to get me the view I wanted. Reception woman Elena was friendly helpful and accommodating. On the other hand the alternate at the desk was brisk, rude cold and dismissive: a young man with a black beard. It was startling how hostile he acted towards me as though I was interrupting him. Why would anyone pay premium room rates to be treated this way! I've been coming here since the 70's and have never seen this before. Beware.

Nancy B.

Yelp
This resort is very old. Our room had cracked walls, slow drains and not that clean. The views were horrible. Said pool & hot tub but had no hot tub. The snack shack is nothing but an old shed. The corn hole boards were all broken up and missing bean bags. Over all this resort was a big disappointment.

Yelp
We had a wonderful 3 day 2 night stay at Ocean Gate Resort and hope to return. The views are stunning, it's a very laid back and relaxing place. We paddle boarded, kayaked and enjoyed sunrise from the dock. We stayed in room 227 ,with a perfect wide overview of the cove from our window . Our balcony was on the side of the room in the trees so the water view was through the pine and birch branches but this gave us a lot of privacy (and smelled great). The buildings are spread out on the wooded hillside property so although the place was fully booked, we did not see a lot of other people except at breakfast. Although our room did not match the pictures (per other reviews) it was very clean, very roomy and comfortable and had clearly been updated fairly recently. My 12 year old travel buddy loved it as much as I did (plenty of activity options like ping pong, mini golf , bikes along with the water activities) - and it is a good choice for families or adults. Also we loved that it's not all lit up at night, you can see the stars!

Kate P.

Yelp
If it was possible to give a negative review to this place I would! The entire place is rundown, the rooms grimy. We were told it was supposed to be updated last year but was not. We stayed in 2 rooms. The first room was in the oldest section, the rooms in the 100s, specifically room 105. There is no way to be kind, the place was a grimy DumP! The room they moved us to, 221 smelled like something died in it, the sink was not attached to the wall, a major safety hazard. I was told they used the oder machine but it didn't work which tells me there was probably something dead under the room. We were given a partial discount on the first room but that was definitely not enough. It's old and nasty. Don't waste your money! And certainly don't pay the prices they charge. Btw the updated photos are not the normal rooms, you can't see the grime and other disgusting problems, like the sliding door not latching, the sink in one room not attached to the wall, a safety hazard also, and too many more problems to list. Update: Expedia gave us a further refund and took this place off their list of recommended hotels. The attorney general of the state of Maine will get a report about the safety problems, of which there were several.

Yelp
Enjoyable stay for our anniversary. Beautiful view from our balcony. Clean room and pool. Great place for families too.

David C.

Yelp
Horrible stay dirty don't stay here You'll be sorry They don't care at all According to the staff the owner is checked out

Frank W.

Yelp
We were staying at a nearby inn, but scouted out this property to see if it would be a possible alternative on a future trip. It was not. The water view location is quite nice, but everything looked dated including the wharf.

Scott R.

Yelp
This is certainly NOT a resort.... They will not make up your room, just leave towels outside and they will bring you replacements... Spiders everywhere in the rooms, not clean at all. Breakfast in actuality is nothing more than a cheap buffet. Toilets are way too small and for that matter bathroom is too small. Manager is rude and has absolutely no good customer service abilities at all. Do not recommend this place for any lengthy stay.

Angela T.

Yelp
An affordable better than a local motel resort- would definitely return. The beds were good and room very clean. The bathroom amenities from bigelow were nice touch. The bathroom and entrance floor were made of stone which wasn't good for my daughter who is picky about dirt and surfaces. Breakfast was fresh and better than chain hotel buffets. Has bacon, eggs, good thick Bread, freshly baked mini croissants, and really good sausage. Would return here!

Dorothy M.

Yelp
Customers beware! This place is run down and nasty. When we arrived in August the air conditioning was off the the room was hot, stuffy, and smelly. We turned on a window unit air conditioning (that contained an inch on dust). The bathroom had a tile ceiling that was falling into the room and cracked floor tiles. It was late so we went to bed. The next day we left to go see the nonexistent town of Boothbay. When we rented the room smelled worse (moldly), the air conditioning still wasn't cooling the room and was dripping water down the wall. All the desk would say is "Sorry about that." No discount for our discomfort or any other resolution. The only positive was the ocean view, but not worst the discomfort we suffered there. Will never go back there.

Audrey G.

Yelp
So I first want to stay that the staff here was incredibly nice!! One of the front desk people was so sweet when I mentioned, this was prior to seeing the room, that I would be leaving early the next day and asked if they might be able to accommodate by putting some breakfast items to go. She had some fruit ready for me(since I mentioned I was paleo), when I came up to the front desk after seeing my room and reporting the condition. I really hate complaining and the front desk people are super nice, but the room I was put in, 216 (request anything but that room), I wouldn't let anyone stay in. While they advertise that most rooms have views of the water... mine definitely did not. In fact the super tiny window looked out on a huge cobweb with a giant spider on it. I arrived at check in, driving an hour out of the way to check out midcoast Maine. The reviews on the property were decent and the rate through HotelTonight at 108 dollars not including the $25.00 activity fee was good I thought for a nice clean room. I was not expecting the best room at the hotel but this room was horrible!! There was a champagne bottle in the garbage I discovered. In the shower I noticed Soap from a prior guest was still in there. These things I noticed after I initially went up to the front desk to report the condition of the door(in part to make sure I wasn't charged for damage) as well as bugs being everywhere. The manager was very kind and took care of the bugs. He explained to me that the crack was caused by the prior guests suitcase slamming into the door. I however, have never seen anything like it. I would have thought I would have been switched given the condition, but I am guessing due to lack of availability this could not happen. I didn't feel safe at all in the room, I felt like I would have bed bug bites the next day, even the soap, which I normally don't react to, cause a horrible skin reaction. This I found strange because the brand, is one I have tried and also is generally a good one. It was getting dark and I ended up just leaving promptly and moving to a very clean room at the Best Western Plus in Augusta. I'm bummed my request to be refunded for the room was not honored, or even a partial refund of the 25.00 activity fee(which is ridiculous to charge to someone who has just reserved for 1 night and can't use any of the activities offered. I will never stay here again, even though it is in beautiful surroundings and the staff is nice because the condition and choice to even put someone in the room I was in was horrifying. I've stayed at a lot of places... and this room and another that was windowless rank up there with the worst. For families this might be a okay hotel... I just know I can't recommend it based on my experience.

Arch G.

Yelp
This is a great setting for a resort! They have kayaks, canoes, and many other recreational options available. They provide a very nice breakfast that includes both hot and cold options. We've stayed here on several occasions, and the one time we had an issue upon arrival they promptly resolved the issue to our complete satisfaction.

Kathy O.

Yelp
We are so happy we stayed here with our two children (10 & 12). Booth Bay was our favorite part of our trip. Our room was clean and comfortable with a beautiful view of the bay. We played ping pong, mini-golfed, swam, hot-tubbed, kayaked, played horseshoes and basketball. I can't believe anyone would complain about the lack of an on premises restaurant. Restaurants were less than a 10 minute drive and we never struggled to find parking. The breakfast was great and the folks employed at Ocean Gate definitely take pride in maintaining the grounds. We'd stay here again!

Amanda P.

Yelp
Would not recommend. Several issues. I will only name a few. Upon entering floors weren't clean. We had flies, moths, and tons of spiders. A huge web was right over the bed. Phone in room did not work and could not call because office closed at 8pm. Bathroom sink did not drain. Toilet clogged on second day and had to call and leave voice-mail for someone to fix. Bed sheets and bags became damp due to moisture. It was like living in a basement. Patio could not use. Mold and algae found on chairs, AC, and curtains. Shower ran cold. Had to keep it running for several minutes and start to use toilet and sink in order to get warm water. This place was not worth over 300 bucks a night.

Rhienna M.

Yelp
Could be an amazing place but the room was dirty! Walked into a room with a bandage on the chair and dirt pillow cases. We tried to enjoy the amenities but deer poop was on the mini golf course. There was also no coffee maker in our room. Which made our morning suck! The room walls were paper thin, not ideal for people with small kiddos unless you have forgiving neighbors. The staff was adorable sweet! There was a ping pong table, bikes to use and a pool. Those are great selling points to keep a family busy. The breakfast was also very tasty.

Don S.

Yelp
The setting is beautiful and the breakfast is a step above the chains. The bed was comfortable. The staff is courteous. So much for the good. The room we were assigned was water view on the first floor of a 2 story set of rooms. The room was dark and damp. One light was out and we asked for a replacement bulb. Despite temps in the 60s and low 70s, we kept the AC on the whole time to try and get the dampness and dank smell out. We also bought some baking soda and air fresheners to combat the odor. If that wasn't bad enough, the room had spiders in the bathroom and under the bed. We bought some bug spray. The grounds look tired, the rooms are dated, the building itself has lots of cracks and rusting railings. WiFI was ok, but not even password protected. There is no cell service in this cove This is really just above tent camping at a chain campsite (KOA) We stayed for 2 nights of a planned 4 night stay, and did lots of interesting things in the Boothbay area, just to not have to go back to the room. There were no refunds but we decided for our well-being to leave early. Live and Learn!!

Dave P.

Yelp
Overpriced for what you get, which are rows of dated cabins set in the trees. No microwaves in rooms, and the central one for guests was 100 yards away. Breakfast was included but not served until 8am, too late for us early risers. All the doors were sticky, including the entry door which refuses keycard entry when it is not fully latched. The office is unstaffed much of the time and locked. However, views are great, the setting is lovely, and parking is convenient. So that's worth the three stars.

Ruth B.

Yelp
I absolutely loved that s lovely hotel. Stayed with n room 235 overlooks by the water. Lovely outdoor seating. Lots to do from mini golf to hot tubbing and swimming to kayaks and canoes. Great free breakfast, too.

Ted D.

Yelp
This is a quaint resort with some slow pace activities. It has a small mini golf course, heated pool, tennis courts, grills for outdoor cooking, kayak 's and paddle boards for the water right on the resort. The rooms are nice but not over the top. The people who work there are really friendly and of course, helpful. We were there at a slow time and everything was very well done. I would definitely consider going back there again.

Hannah S.

Yelp
This is definitely a big gem hidden away on the northern tip of the Southport Island in Boothbay Harbor. The resort has a wide range of rooms and views you can choose from, including rooms you can get at a typical inn to cottages with full-kitchens. The waterfront building is a treat because you are basically looking out to the water and neighboring islands (it's so serene and beautiful!) I was pleasantly surprised by all the activities they have available at this resort as well. You can borrow kayaks, canoes and have a DIY experience off of their private boat landing. If water sports are not your thing, they have a fitness center, picnic area, pool, mini-golf, basketball court, and tennis court. There's also a fresh water fishing pond nearby, all within walking distance. The free, full, hot breakfast is as good as it gets! It's too bad we're in such a rush this time around. Next time, I'd stay a whole week here and just relax! Just a warning if you're planning to stay here... there's not an actual "searchable" address for this place on Google. Your best bet would be to enter "Landing Rd. Southport, ME 04576" and you'll see "Ocean Gate Resort" on the map. Ocean Gate Road is an unnamed street on Google Map between Landing Rd. and Camerons Point Rd. off of Route 27.

Dave C.

Yelp
We came in August... fair warning - I don't think it ever really gets hot in Maine - at least not near the coast. Having said that, this was a great experience. Let me drone on, and bore you with my review: 1.) They were accommodating - we spent 2 nights with 2 adults and 1 child and added a 2nd child on our 3rd night (she was there on a U-Maine excursion) - and they let us do that and didn't charge us for 4 people except for the last night. 2.) We spent hours canoeing - and had a great time - and saw lots of local birds 3.) My son and I had a major ping pong tournament 4.) We had an ocean view room - at the water's edge - well... at high tide. At low tide - big difference - and enjoyed sitting on the back porch and taking it in. 5.) No one can really come there unless they are staying - it is far enough off the main road that you feel a world apart. 6.) We used the pool everyday. Remember, August, right? Highs of 68 degrees outside. Maine. Brr.... The pool water was warmer than the outside. And the hot tub was great at night. 7.) Every morning we just did activities at Ocean View until around lunch time - when we ambled into town to get food. And that was late. Breakfasts were as filling as you wanted. 8.) They are continuing to spruce up and upgrade We could have spent more time there. I wish my daughter (the older one who only came on the last night) could have had time to enjoy - but we were only there because of her college trip. Just don't expect a fast pace. This is a place to get away from the crowds (and in August, Boothbay has crowds).

Kelly K.

Yelp
This was such a pleasant surprise! Not the most fancy place but the rooms were clean, beds comfortable, and we had a balcony with a gorgeous view. Access to kayaks, canoes, ping pong, mini golf, and a fantastic breakfast, all included in the room rate. Staff was very nice. It would be a fun place for a family or group.

Llima O.

Yelp
Spent three days there and was very happy. It's definitely an older resort, but the staff is very helpful and polite. You can go kayaking or even fishing if you'd like. The view out our balcony was absolutely incredible. If it wasn't for the insane amount of mosquitoes I would have sat out there every night. They really should do a bit of updating, especially the bedspreads, which are those older polyester kinds. The room was always very clean which was wonderful. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for some real peace and quiet.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this place!!! Want to go back now. I would rate it as a three star property. Not to upscale, and not low scale either..just a perfect mix for our needs. Relaxing and unpretentious. Several years ago it got new owners, and they are bringing this place back to life. The waterfront building and the Cedar building overlooking the water are completely renovated with flat screen TVs and comfy beds. We were in the Cedar building which is a little higher up from the water and had great views from our deck. The pool was heated, and the hot tub nice and hot! We also loved the free use of kayaks/canoes. Every morning I was up before my significant other, and I walked to the camp pavilion where Ocean Gate set up a coffee station for their guests and some great peaceful music playing outdoors. It just added the the feel and ambiance of this place. I loved sitting outside so early absorbing the atmosphere with my coffee and a little Frank Sinatra... I don't know how else to describe it, but as a summer camp for adults with lovely rooms and very friendly owners and service. Little pathways through woods, and well lit little wooden bridges over the rocky wooded landscape to get to our room. Then the whole property opens up to the ocean inlet. So relaxing. The breakfast was great too...the owners definitely bring their southern roots with the addition of very good biscuits and gravy to their included daily breakfast buffet. Ultimately we want to return. Even with other people around it feels like you have this place to yourself. It's really a hard to describe place..it's special somehow and very unique. They also have tennis courts, basketball hoops, mini golf and a paddle boat on the pond which we did not use. Thanks to Frank and Bernie (brothers) and family for your great hospitality! Its clear how much they love this place too.

Jake P.

Yelp
Went for the weekend and was way better than I thought it would be. Rooms were nice, and my daughter was thrilled with the pool and canoeing with us. Great views from the room and a very relaxed atmosphere which was needed. The breakfast was really good and the girl working the room really hustled. She was great!

Dave D.

Yelp
Not a good experience! I stayed one night, June 5, 2019. It was cold that evening...upper 50's and needed heat. Unfortunately the knob on the baseboard heater was broken. (Outdated!) I had to call the front desk at 10 pm for maintenance man to repair the knob. Second issue was the billing. I booked through Expedia at a reasonable price. One month later discovered an additional charge of $27.25 was added to my credit card. After enquirering I was told the charge was a service fee for staying and breakfast. I was not informed or invoiced for the charge. I appealed the charge but to no avail. Questionable policies, perhaps illegal.

Liz M.

Yelp
We stayed for one night and wished we could have stayed longer! If you are looking for modern and contemporary polish, go elsewhere. If you want charm, stunning views, the scent of the forest, and relaxed privacy, come here. The staff accommodated our late arrival, and made our room comfy and warm so we could settle in for a restful night. The morning brought great views, the chatter of birds and the scent of the ocean. Breakfast was traditional morning fare, with the option of sitting outside amongst nature. We are planning to return in the early fall to enjoy all Ocean Gate Resort has to offer. Thanks for a great stay!

Des D.

Yelp
We had a great time with family. Loads to do and the staff are lovely. Nice pool and hot tube, mini golf and bikes and canoes and kayaks for the water.

Spencer A.

Yelp
We (my wife and 3 sons) stayed at Ocean Gate Resort the beginning of June on our first trip up the Maine coast. We originally booked 2 rooms for a couple of nights just to explore the area. We secured them through a third party website (Booking.com) a day before our planned arrival and there was no way of indicating we wanted the rooms next to or near each other. When we arrived, the rooms were in two different buildings. I explained to Hugo (manager, I believe) of our hope that the rooms be near each other and was pleasantly surprised by the events that followed. We had arrived later in the day, apparently near quitting time for most of the staff. There were employees literally talking about seeing each other tomorrow near me at the time. Once we indicated our wish to have the rooms near each other, Hugo and his staff dropped everything and stayed late to immediately prep the room next door to one of the 2 rooms we booked. The staff was so nice about it and didn't seem bothered in the slightest to clean and prep the room while we unloaded our luggage. The rooms were fantastic and had the most amazing view over the water. Over the course of the next few days, we absolutely fell in love with the resort and surrounding area...so much so, that we asked to extend our stay at Ocean Gate. I wasn't expecting to be able to do so because the place was pretty busy. But I figured it was worth inquiring about, so I again talked to Hugo. I explained our wishes and willingness to move rooms if we could be accommodated. Once again, I was thrilled to find out he worked his magic on the computer and we were able to stay right where we were. I cannot begin to describe how great this place is. I was completely surprised at how friendly Hugo and the entire staff was. We were asked repeatedly how they could make our stay better or if we needed anything. We woke up to the most amazing views, the included breakfast buffet was far better than any "free breakfast" I'd ever had on the road, and all the activities were included in the highly affordable nightly rate. We canoed and kayaked (included), played some putt-putt golf (included), fished at the on-property pond (fishing poles included), used the LL Bean bicycles (included), sat around the campfires at night (free firewood), played ping-pong for hours in the evening, and cooked some lobster and steak on the brand new gas grills. Seriously, this is what a "resort" should be like. As a family, we had collectively decided years ago to never vacation in the same place twice. Life is short and we want to see the world. You simply can't do that when you really only take one vacation per year. But, after staying in the Boothbay Harbor / Southport area at the Ocean Gate Resort, we all agreed this is the kind of place to have one of those family vacation traditions where everyone in the family converges on once a year. In fact, for a few years now, my wife has wanted to spend her 40th birthday in Las Vegas, just her and I. But after staying here, she informed me she wants to book the one-room cabin overlooking the water for her birthday next year. Looks like we're gonna be "regulars" here! I'd like to personally thank Hugo and his amazing staff for helping us have a phenomenal summer vacation. We'll see you all again next fall.

Kelsey L.

Yelp
The saving grace of staying here was the privacy and the view. We were in the one bedroom cottage and I believe the strip of rooms next to us was having work done so there weren't any guests. But our cabin was very cold. The upstairs attic window was broken and there was no separating to keep to the cold up there. The heat didn't seem to cut it. We were also instructed to leave our garbage outside and a card with anything we needed (no house keeping due to covid). Our garbage sat out the whole time and we had to call when we needed paper towels. I think they forgot there were guests in the cabin. And I know this is kind of out Of their control, but my car was pelted with acorns our whole stay. My car was brand new a couple months ago and now I need to have body work repaired so that was very discouraging. Also lots of spider webs and easy clean up that could have been taken care of on the balcony to make it more enjoyable. Breakfast was 1-2 pieces of toast, melon and pineapple, eggs and bacon or sausage. View was magnificent though

Sharon K.

Yelp
So happy I found this out of the way resort! So nice to drive thru their woods and find such an oasis of peace and quiet after touring for a day. Glad this was at the end of our vacation and having three days of complete R&R was wonderful. Bed was very comfy, breakfast was great and our waterfront room was just as it says, right on the water. Watched the lobster heading out every morning and the ever changing tide! So many activities offered right at the resort, it is a great place for families! Will definite return.

Victor L.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this quiet, pleasant resort. In August 2012 my family spent the seventeenth year at this peaceful and relaxing resort. This is a family-friendly, child-friendly resort on the Maine coast, 'rustic' in the best meaning of the word, one where you go every summer to relax, unwind and stop worrying about the World. There are kayaks and canoes available, a nine-hole minigolf course, a heated pool and an exercise room (treadmill, elliptical machine, exercise bike and a Weider multi-station 200 pound stack gym). Our accommodations have always been immaculate, well furnished with prompt and meticulous housekeeping. The free breakfasts are varied and filling, at least on a level with a Best Western or Holiday Inn and, in my judgment, better than that. You have sausages, eggs, potatoes, oatmeal, cold cereal, fruit, bagels, toast, etc. Frank the owner-manager and his staff are unfailingly pleasant and always available; all requests are promptly handled. The grounds are well-kept, with some beautiful flower beds (e.g. the roses by the pool). There are wonderful views wherever you look and you will see gulls and cormorants and the occasional seal. The sunsets especially are spectacular. You really don't have to leave this island of tranquility 'far from the madding crowd' except to get dinner or explore Boothbay Harbor (BBH) and the environs and that is part of its allure. There has been many a day when my family and I have never left the grounds since we have been too 'busy' just relaxing. For exploring BBH and all that it has to offer this is a restful home base about seven to ten minutes to downtown BBH over the swing bridge. We have eaten at all other the major resorts in BBH and environs and strolled the grounds afterwards. Based on that, compared to Oceangate they either a) are much (and I mean on the order of twice as much) more expensive or, b) if comparably priced, do not have anywhere near the same breadth and scope of amenities and activities. Oceangate is extremely reasonably priced for all that you have available when you are there. Also, if comparing rates to a B&B, motel or hotel, remember that you get all that Oceangate has to offer, not just a place to park and a room and that's about it. Try Oceangate for a weekend or a week, you will enjoy it!

Yelp
We have stayed here twice in the last 10 days. The views are spectacular but the rooms are worn and tacky. Even the tv didn't get audio on all the stations and the Internet service did not work. The staff is unhelpful. We would not stay here again at any price!

Yelp
The place was clean & most of the staff were polite but beware of the utensil police! They have a free breakfast in the morning. The food is so so. The eggs are a bit dry but the home fries are good. If you plan on sitting outside be prepared to be uncomfortable while seated in the iron chairs they provide though. And if you want a fork you better hope there are some outside in the bin because if you go inside & try to take a setting off an unused table the fork police will loudly snap at you demanding to know if you are planning to eat outside. The forks are OUTSIDE for the people seated outdoors, do not take the forks from inside. After that he'll spend the rest of the day smiling at you like he's the friendiest kid on earth.

Yelp
view is impressive but so far that is all I can rave about. breakfast is dreadful ... pancakes we inedible like cardboard.. not even real maple syrup. come on were in Maine ! not even any Maine blueberries. for $200 a night, disappointing to say the least. a road side motel would be better.... especially with a bug found on the bed and spiders in the bathroom. sad. really sad. would not be upset if I was $100 per night. feeling misled...

Yelp
Check in was courteous and smooth. The rooms were clean. The view from our room was spectacular. The hot breakfast was fresh and delicious. The staff was attentive and courteous. The food was always well stocked and never ran out of any breakfast items. The grounds were well kept. The lawns were mowed and no debris to be seen. I would stay here again if chance presented itself.

Yelp
I'm getting married on Southport Island this summer and reserved a block of rooms for our guests with Frank last summer--or so I thought. A couple of months ago I received a voicemail from Frank stating that since he hadn't yet received any reservations, he couldn't move forward without a financial commitment--which, fine, that's something I can understand, despite the fact that that wasn't in the initial agreement. When we inquired about the issue and acknowledged that no one had yet booked a room, Frank snarkily asked if we had even bothered to send Save the Dates. (And yes, we did, six months before the wedding, as is customary). When pressed, it was revealed that Frank did not actually ever block the rooms for our wedding--he had forgotten to do so--and now the entire inn was booked for another wedding happening on the island. It would appear that he would rather seem snooty than admit the degree to which he had been ineffectual--neither is very appealing, and neither encourage me from considering using Ocean Gate for anything moving forward. Everyone knows wedding planning is stressful, and so if you'd like to save yourself some worry, avoid Ocean Gate when blocking rooms for your guests.

Yelp
We stayed for two nights in June for a wedding (off site, thank goodness). We stayed in the "main building" which boasts ocean views. Yes, we could see the ocean from the back patio/balcony. That was it in terms of highlights. The rooms (seemingly all of them as my family was booked in 3 other rooms in the same building) very musty smelling and didn't get much better with open windows or a/c. We had ants in our bed. And there were at least a half-dozen other creepy crawlies/bugs of sorts that we saw (who knows how many we didn't see). The day of the wedding one of their boilers went off line and I had a cold shower. And forget about cell service unless you are in the breakfast room. Unfortunately, to add insult to injury, the land line had a terrible connection (trying to connect with our babysitter at home). The breakfast was a bit sad (think spruced up continental) and every time I went to get coffee they were out. All of these issues could have been made a little less insulting had the management (Frank) been willing to knock a little off the bill when we went to check out. Nope. Not even an apology. Just a "you should have called when your hot water wasn't working so we could address the problem." Right, because of course I left ample time to get ready for the wedding for them to fix a boiler and then try showering again. For a place that charges what it does, it just seems to take advantage of it's location, figuring that that alone will compensate for the lack of courtesy, cleanliness, and basics a "resort" should have. Not ever going back, thank you very much.

Yelp
Went there for my cousin weddings . No hot water during the entire stay, when I went to complain Frank the owner he was rude and dismissive. Rooms were musty and smelly. None of the outside flood lights worked so the rehearsal dinner was in almost complete darkness. The deck where the reception was held was almost falling down and not built to code. The stairs at ocean gate are death traps, broken, odd heights and unsafe. Frank demand that we strike everything from the deck that night right after the reception despite my cousin booking it for two whole days. Frank told my cousin that he would keep the pool open and tried to back out of a week before the wedding. Frank is what is wrong with Ocean Gate it would not take munch to make this resort great but while Frank is there avoid this place. He is a lazy, ignorant, arrogant jerk who should have nothing to do with a business that involves guests.
