Ocean View Hotel

I recently stayed at this beautiful coastal spot with my colleagues for our retreat for one night and honestly, the environment alone is worth the trip. The place is surrounded by lush greenery, a peaceful beach, and the prettiest plumeria trees it’s such a calm, refreshing break from everyday life.

We recently stayed at the Ocean View Hotel as a group of eight while attending the Sea2Sea Enduro event. From the moment we arrived, the staff's warmth and friendliness made a huge impact on our stay. They were incredibly accommodating and always ensured we had everything we needed. The hotel itself is excellent, with both the restaurant and accommodation being top-notch. The rooms were comfortable, and the meals were delicious, offering a great variety that satisfied everyone in our group. For those driving, the tar road from Mthatha to Coffee Bay is in really good condition, making the journey there stress-free. Overall, we had a fantastic time, and I would highly recommend the Ocean View Hotel, especially if you're in town for events like Sea2Sea or just to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Coffee Bay.

You can tell that this was once a really amazing place and business was once booming. It is now neglected and needs a total revamp. The rooms were at least clean but no air conditioners and loose cable wires and empty TV brackets on the wall where a TV used to be. These should’ve been removed the moment the TV’s were - it’s distasteful to say the least. It also didn’t feel safe. I actually had to change my room that had the best view to another because the bathroom window in the original room didn’t close! It’s big enough for a person to fit through. The two stars are for the friendly and hospitable kitchen and cleaning staff, as well as the delicious buffet breakfast and the homemade bread. And the amazing sea views and close proximity to the beach. I’m a cat person but a cat in the dining area is completely inappropriate and made other guests visibly uncomfortable. The few houses outside the hotel premises look run down and abandoned and definitely bring the value of the hotel itself down but I guess that isn’t something within their control.

The location is fabulous and the area unique but the hotel is lacking and unequal:|1. Worn edifice, missing wooden steps, no heating, wifi merely responding in part of the restaurant terrace.|2. Restaurant with mediocre food, decently served and willingly waited but neither the fish, nor the fish platter or the beet root salad were something to write home about. |3. Breakfast was modest but willingly supplemented with omelets.|4. Room was with good orientation and the ocean roared pleasently and that was the only asset.|5. Safety and security on the grounds was effected.|6. Aesthetics and decoration on the nonexistent lounge, reception and communal areas were uninspiring.

Great location, serve a good buffet breakfast. Can't comment in rooms or any of the other facilities, but listening to the patrons chat and their interaction with the staff, I gather its a decent place. Sadly, the local inhabitants use the hotel driveway access as a party zone and the holiday and weekend noise may annoy guests.

For the price point, we were expecting a lot more. The pictures advertised are a bit deceiving. The rooms were barely passable. Food was bland and one dimensional....not all dietary requirements are taken into consideration when planning the menu. The food definitely needs to be given more attention. Staff are polite and helpful but are clearly untrained. Buffet meals were often served up to 45 minutes later than the stipulated time with management nowhere to be seen. It's a great location with lots of potential. However, it is poorly managed and in a state of disrepair. Either the price needs to drop considerably, or the standards need to reflect the pricing.

We spent four nights there arriving on 31st December, great anticipation for seafood supper. What a letdown, some mussels in a solid sauce, frozen fillets, a yellowtail fish. No prawns, no Calamari, can understand no crayfish as the season was closed, what a let down. However the remaining nights food was okay, a different roast every night, only query was that they served the same dessert every night and most nights the jelly was mostly liquid. ||I found the staff to be great and most helpful. Our room upstairs was fine but again the whole place needs fixing. In the front there was a piece of the facade that was broken and looked terrible, easy to fix. The sunbeds around the pool all needed to have a coat of white paint and it would have then looked much better around the pool. So easy to trim the palm trees of their dead palms. The biggest problem is the road leading down to Coffee Bay, one of the worst I have ever driven. It needs to be fixed so that the area can take advantage of the tourism growth. ||Would recommend a visit but please folks give the hotel some tender loving care, even you staff complain about the lack of maintenance.

For the price it's just not worth it. R1200 per person in a double room with slight sea view. Yes, included a very basic dinner and breakfast, but not tasty. I feel for R2400 for a night myself and my husband have stayed at way better with much nicer food. Tea/coffee in room but no sugar? Water provided in the room, it was never put in. Bar is empty, a few beers, ciders and a few bottles of wine - very disappointing. We were hoping to extend our stay but left after one night. Won't be returning - did express my disappointment to management and was told, sorry...... not value for money, way overpriced.
