Octant Hotels Douro (Castelo de Paiva, Douro Valley) 5 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Douro Valley of northern Portugal isn’t exactly a secret among overseas visitors — the English flocked to the city of Porto centuries ago to taste the sweet wine that made the city famous. But in recent years, seemingly every corner of Portugal has undergone a sort of hospitality renaissance, a trend that’s evident in the construction of sleek seaside properties like Octant Hotels Douro, a contemporary luxury-hotel complex housing 56 rooms and 5 suites." - Tablet Hotels

This Minimalist Hotel in Porto Offers Breathtaking Views of The Douro River - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"Set on the banks of the Douro River about an hour from Porto, this 61-room five-star riverside retreat feels like another world and was selected for a boutique travel portfolio. The tiered, modern property emphasizes panoramic river and Ilha dos Amores views with floor-to-ceiling windows, glass walkways, wide terraces and marble-accented, neutral-toned interiors. Dining highlights local Douro Valley produce: a Michelin-recognized restaurant serves Portuguese-inspired dishes (including freshwater fish) and an expansive breakfast with local jams, fresh-baked breads and honey from on-site bees, while a casual wine bar offers Portuguese wines, cocktails and fire-cooked small plates. Wellness is a focus, with a spa featuring five treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy circuit, sauna and Turkish bath and rotating monthly practitioners offering services from meditation to acupuncture; there are three pools (indoor with a fireplace, rooftop and central outdoor). On-site activities include private boat rides with picnic options and visits to the private Lovers’ Island, plus in-house sommelier wine tastings. Typical amenities and perks include a fitness center, room service, complimentary Wi‑Fi, possible arrival upgrades, daily buffet breakfast for two, a complimentary 50-minute massage per guest once per stay (for up to two guests), and early check-in/late check-out subject to availability; rooms start at about $200/night."

I had the pleasure of staying at Octant Douro with a friend, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The gastronomy was exceptional — every meal was crafted with care, flavour, and creativity. The room was spotless, incredibly comfortable, and beautifully maintained. But what truly stood out was the service: every staff member was kind, professional, and genuinely welcoming. It was, without a doubt, the best service I’ve experienced in a hotel in Portugal. Everything about our stay was perfect from start to finish. I wholeheartedly recommend Octant Douro and can’t wait to return.

We booked the Suite Panoramic for 5 nights and it did not disappoint! You will want to live in it! It is the very best view in the entire hotel. No pool or restaurant can exceed it though those views are also lovely. It also sits very close to the Adult Pool. Skip the unit with the pool and book this suite and enjoy the pool next door or your own large terrace. The staff is incredible. Super thoughtful, engaging, warm and knowledgeable. The concierge was incredibly helpful arranging many things in advance so we could dimply enjoy snd relax while we are here. The food and wine so lovely and they can easily accommodate plant-based eaters with tasty foods. Biodynamic wines also available and delicious. A very special place we are grateful to have visited. Highly Highly recommend!!

From our amazing check in experience by Ines and Catarina , and the full crew , I can’t fault the 10star service of the people at this hotel . The views are breathtakingly beautiful. The lunch at the terrace and the most helpful polite waiter Teixeira serving great lunch . You must try the food , best dinner in Portugal at the Raiva , I had the beef tenderloin and my husband had the fish , served by Pedro . I have allergies and Pedro checked every dish with the chef before letting me know what I could eat . Exceptional service and well done to all staff including the breakfast staff . We will be returning . We feel we were really looked after .

Amazing location and a great breakfast buffet. Beautiful view, gorgeous surroundings and altogether amazing design. However, unlike our expectations, we didn't sleep well at all, despite the location being in the middle of nature... The AC is constantly blowing despite being on Auto and this being late april. However, the worst part is that the mattress was in a dire need of replacement as it was already very soft in the middle, tilting our backs towards the center of the bed. Things like these can happen, but as I informed the staff upon checkout of this, it didn't really seem like they cared or reported this to management. Somewhat odd considering the cost and general level of the establishment. The sauna has an amazing view but is definitely not warm enough, even for Portuguese standards. I barely had any sweat despite sitting in it for over 15 minutes. The Turkish bath, however, is good. The pool area is nice. However, kids have to leave it by 4 pm. Unfortunately, they charge 50€ extra for preschool kids, something we didn't come across in our previous stays at similar hotels.

We stayed here in April for four nights - in a river view room with a balcony and given the good weather at the time we made the most of the balcony watching the boats on the river.| |In some ways the hotel is almost like a museum inside with flowing corridors and interesting things to look at. There are many places to sit and watch the river and just relax.||We ate mainly in the À TERRA and once in RAIVA and always enjoyed the food.|The best and most important thing though is the staff; very friendly, very professional, always there when you need them and happy to help you.|We had a minor issue whilst there which was sorted out to our satisfaction by Lourenço Guimarães the Guest Relations Manager.||The hotel is close enough to Porto for a visit but we spent most of our time in and around the hotel - you can walk along the river in either direction and there are nearby towns for picnic provisions etc.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at this gorgeous property. The staff, food, wine, amenities, room and view were spectacular. I let a necklace slip down the sink drain and my husband left a coat in the closet, neither was a problem. We had nothing but exceptional service. We thoroughly enjoyed 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 dinners on the property. Both restaurants were amazing, especially the Michelin starred Raiva. We also loved our couples massage and private wine tasting. It’s also just a beautiful 45 min drive from Porto. Highly recommend!!

Octant Douro surpassed all expectations — from check-in to farewell. Rooms are beautifully designed with iconic pieces, shared spaces are tastefully curated, and amenities like the indoor pool made it hard to leave. The standout? Dinner at Raiva — easily one of the best meals I’ve had recently. Surprising it hasn’t earned a Michelin star yet, especially when it outshone some that have, both in Portugal and beyond. The only letdown was breakfast at A Terra. Service missed the mark, and while the spread was fine, the execution felt out of step with the rest of the property. A Terra has some catching up to do. Still — five stars, without hesitation, for Octant Douro as a hotel. I can’t wait to visit their other properties.

Stayed 2 nights in June 2025.|Had a room with a garden terrace which was amazing. The hotel is in a fantastic location with amazing views over the Duro river.|However|On arrival the reception was very poor and slow checking in. The service around the pool was terrible. No towels, no drinks service, never cleared finished drinks - we took them back to the bar ourselves, and evertime we went to the bar to buy drinks they wanted to charged us 15% service charge for serving ourselves !|The Resteraunts and service in the Resteraunt’s was good 👍|Check out was again very slow. We paid for everything we had ordered on our room immediately (around £400) After leaving the hotel we found that they had double charged our credit card with ANOTHER £400 ( we had to dispute this over several days to get it back)|An amazing hotel let down by poor service.
