Octant Hotels Furnas (Sao Miguel, Azores) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Octant Hotels Furnas, a luxury hotel built on and around naturally occurring thermal waters on the island of São Miguel — one of nine volcanic islands on the Azores archipelago — offers a series of indoor-outdoor thermal pools and an extensive spa to weary adventurers returning from outdoor explorations. The hotel, a clever reworking of a historic thermal center, is striking in its own right. Interiors are cool and calm, with huge glass windows and natural colors and textures inspired by the Azorean springs. Guest rooms feature minimalist nature photography and a smart mix of contemporary furniture and vintage pieces. There’s a sophisticated restaurant specializing in Portuguese cuisine made with organic island ingredients, and a dreamy cocktail lounge with hanging lanterns and greenery." - Tablet Hotels

We had a wonderful stay at Octant Furnas. The entire staff—from the front desk and doorman to the bartenders and wait staff—were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Our room was consistently clean and well-kept, and we appreciated the turndown service. The small touches throughout our stay did not go unnoticed and added to the overall experience. During the day, we explored the beautiful surroundings of Furnas, returning each evening to relax and unwind at the hotel. The outdoor dining experience was memorable, and the meal was delicious. We also made the most of both pools each day, which added to the enjoyment of our stay. Overall, our visit to Furnas was exceptional, and Octant Furnas played a big part in making it so.

The hotel is ideally located, beautifully designed, for me it’s worth 5 stars. Murillo has been super welcoming since our arrival. The team does absolutely everything to keep your stay excellent. They prepared a bed for our daughter with very cute gifts. It was really nice. The rooms are extremely clean, the breakfast is absolutely amazing, with local products and homemade food. Special mention for the beef sandwich, they don’t even ask you how you want your meat because it’s absolutely out of he world. The spa is wonderful and they offer yoga in the water which is amazing. The experience manager does his job well and he found 2 farm experiences which we loved.

Our stay had both good moments and some definite downsides. The rooms were much smaller than I expected, which made things feel cramped, (on our honeymoon to say the least) especially if you have more than one suitcase. The location was fine, close enough to local attractions, but nothing particularly memorable. The outdoor pool area was a letdown. It’s right next to a busy road, so there’s a lot of traffic noise, and the lounge chairs are very old and not comfortable for relaxing. There’s also no poolside service, so you have to leave the pool to get food or drinks. The spa services felt limited, and overall, the amenities seemed outdated and in need of a little more care and attention to detail. On the positive side, the food was excellent. The breakfast buffet might honestly be one of the best I’ve ever had, with plenty of fresh, flavorful options, and dinner was just as good. I did mention some of the issues during my stay, but unfortunately, not much was done to address them. With a few upgrades and more attentive service, this place could be a lot more enjoyable.

Spa: A great place! Very calming atmosphere, with various pools both indoors and outdoors. I also had an excellent massage here with very professional staff. Room: Quite poor. Very humid, and we had mold on the ceiling. Understandable given the humid location, but the several encounters with cockroaches (see picture - this one in our closet) made it increasingly unpleasant. Service (excluding the spa): Quite poor, mainly because it was very slow. A clear example is the coffee at breakfast: we often had to wait the entire meal (30+ minutes) and ask several times before getting one. The issue is that you cannot serve yourself (no machine available); you need a staff member to bring it. All in all: 5 stars for the location/spa, 1 star for service, 1 star for the room → 2 stars for this 5-star hotel.

We had high hopes for the hotel, but it was just underwhelming. The staff was nice, but completely clueless as to how to serve an upscale clientele. For example, they had an incredibly hard time providing recommendations for things to do and places to eat in one of the best towns in one of the most amazing places we have ever visited. The thermal pools on site were underwhelming and could be so much more with some vision. Additionally, The entire property showed signs of wear and tear throughout.||On the plus side, the food was good, nice to have the pools on site, and the hotel location within Furnas was prime.

My wife and I traveled the Azores and when people ask how it was we always start with this place. Truly magical location, with top notch staff. We arrived a bit early when the room wasn't ready but the staff gave us towels and told us to walk across the street to the natural geothermal pool next to the river and told us to put our feet in the pool, then when its too hot turn around and put our feet in the river to cool down while enjoying the scenery. It was a perfect way to start our stay. The pool being an actual geothermal pool and not a chlorine pool makes this place one of kind. Everyone on staff is so welcoming we felt like the most important guests and could truly relax. The dinning room made you feel like you were eating in the middle of the jungle. Some people might not appreciate the weather being misty/cloudy so much but we think it adds to the mystic of the place. As we try to plan our next trip we always ask ourselves "Do we just go back to Furnas?"

The hotel is ideally located in the furnas village away from some “overturism” in the centre. Furnas is a special place with its termal water and the hotel profits from it. The service is very professional and kind. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is high quality and the restaurant is very cozy and the food is very good. Nice termal water in the pools. I would suggest as an improvement to install acoustic barriers between the exterior pool and the road behind it.

We stayed for 3 nights and unfortunately faced multiple issues. On our first day, we had to change rooms due to a toilet leakage, as no maintenance was available to fix it immediately. The next day it was repaired, and we moved back to our original room, but the garden door was broken and almost fell on my husband, a serious safety concern. The room itself was also very small, with barely enough space to walk around the bed, which made it feel cramped and uncomfortable. Our dining experience was equally disappointing. On our first night, we followed the restaurant’s recommendation and ordered the tuna, which led to food poisoning. The next day at lunch, we had the calamari salad and experienced similar symptoms again. We also missed out on the thermal pools because there was no welcome tour or introduction to the facilities. Given that our room wasn’t ready when we arrived, the staff could have taken the opportunity to show us around. At the bar, we ordered tequila and were recommended a different brand without being informed it cost €20 a shot, an unpleasant surprise on the bill. The staff were polite and did their best under the circumstances, but the overall experience fell far short of expectations, especially given the hotel’s positioning and rates.
