Odeon of Herodes Atticus

An ancient Roman theatre, renovated in the 1950s into an active venue for various shows. It's beautiful and architecturally impressive considering its built in 161 AD. They only host shows during the Athens festival in the summer, so plan accordingly if you wanted to experience a show in the ancient theatre.

To watch a drama in the ancient Roman theater was always in my bucket list. This theater has a semicircular three-story structure and is said to be able to accommodate 6,000 people. It is the main venue for the "Athens Art Festival" every summer. We did my homework in advance and bought tickets. Tonight, a drama in Greek with English subtitles was performed. It lasted for an hour and a half, and I was very interested in it. The plot is adapted from Homer's epic and is set before Agamemnon's expedition to Troy. The characters and props are modern and full of drama. The famous phrase "live happily as an ordinary person or die as a hero" also appears in the play, and ends with Agamemnon's daughter sacrificing her life for victory of the war. The theater was almost full, which was a bit unexpected. To watch a show inside of the theater was a quiet life time experience.

6000 people can view a performance or lecture in this theater. The design causes the acoustics to be clear and evenly reverberates throughout the entire venue. Three viewing areas at the bottom behind the stage.

Magical place, i was there at the spectacular Septicflesh concert with orchestra and choir. Amazing acoustics, dim, dark mood that set the tone and really brings out the textures in the old theatres rocks. Recommend seeing it even if there are no events, just take it all in

Our second self-guided walking tour in Athens brought us to the Acropolis and its surroundings: Theatre of Dionysus > Odeon of Herodes Atticus > Propylaea > Temple of Athena Nike > Parthenon > Erechtheion > Areopagus Hill > Roman Agora > Ancient Agora of Athens > Temple of Hephaestus > Stoa of Attalos (which houses the Museum of the Ancient Agora) After lunch, we went to Hadrian's Library, followed by Plaka (including Anafiotika). A remarkable ancient theater with tight seating, but an enchanting experience. The view, lighting, and acoustics create a truly magical atmosphere. It's definitely worth a visit.
