I really wish I could give this hotel 2.5 stars, but I can't, so I'm just going to round up. First, let's talk about the lows, then we can talk about the highs. First, as soon as you stepped out of the elevator, the hallways smelled terrible, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls, and the lights were flickering. I walked into the bathroom and turned on the light and saw two cockroaches. Many of the surfaces were rusted, chipped, or poorly painted. There was trash under furniture in the room. The balcony felt really unsafe because the concrete below me was beginning to sag and felt very uneven. Lastly, the pool was cold, dark, loud, and a bit depressing. Now for the good. First the location is perfect. The lobby is nice, the rooms were clean (other than the roaches), the beds were very comfortable, and the hotel staff was all exceptionally helpful and friendly. It is a great value how every room comes with a kitchenette. I also really liked the free gift bags you could get every morning, that was a nice touch. Overall, I think this hotel has lots of great potential. Given that it has so many unique features presumably original to the building (such as the old school elevators and curved walls in the rooms), I think it would be really cool if the did a renovation in which they made this a retro style Hawaiian hotel (sort of like the Laylow which is coincidentally across the street). I would stay here again if it were the cheapest option (like it was this time), but otherwise I would look elsewhere. This is a great place to stay if you don't spend a lot of time at the hotel or in your room, but if you do, I'd recommend finding another option.
