On the Grid : Ojo Rojo

"Owner Trevor Hill turned a moment of inspiration at a Mexican eatery in Playa del Carmen into Bournemouth’s leading Mexican street food inspired dining restaurant and bar, right down to the curious and details hidden throughout the venue. Launching Ojo Rojo with partner JJ in 2016, the pair brought authentic tequilas, mezcals, tostadas and tacos to The Triangle. It’s the antithesis of tired Tex-Mex franchise fodder - think pork belly, slow-cooked rabbit or ceviche. The clincher, though, is the fun, friendly ambiance and one of the leading influences in tequila and mezcal within the UK." - Bright Blue Day

Really wanted to love this place. I love mexican food and tapas and this place looked amazing. Unfortunately my high expectations were too high. Half of of the food we had was very bland and some of it was very small. We did like the duck, the chorizo and potatoes though. We'd only order these if we went again We tried 2 of your cocktails and they we really bitter. they're a different type of cocktail compared to most other places. They look amazing but they're very marmite Service was a mixed bag. The Swedish/European guy was amazing but the other guy with the dark hair wasn't. We had to ask him twice for some garlic sauce and didn't know how to process out gift card

I loved it here! We ate so many different things and everything tasted amazing! My highlights were the pork tacos and the trio of dips with tortilla chips (one of the dips is hot cheese!) The cocktails are really interesting and delicious. Staff were very friendly and informative, even warned us before the kitchen was closing so we could order any more food we wanted. The decor is very fun with pretty twinkling lights. My only tiny gripe was that I did get a little bit chilly towards the end of the meal but otherwise a perfect dinner out.

Amazing food and service! Visited about 6 on a Sunday evening, and it was quiet. We ordered the chicken enchiladas to share, the chicken and the duck tacos, and 2 tapas, which were the hasselback chorizo and the rojo rice.

Such a fun place! Service was great, had no idea what mezcal was and our waiter was really helpful. Food was delicious, highly recommend the cauliflower tacos! Basque cheesecake was fab as well.

Amazing place. My friend and I chose Ojo Rojo because she needs a decent gluten free me u with plenty of options. We had not visited here before but will definitely be back again. We loved the ambience, look of the place, lovely warm welcome. Great menu choices for food and drinks. We had mulled wine 🍷 on the advice of the server. Every dish was gorgeous and as he predicted we didn't eat it all and took a doggie bag home. The guys that served us were welcoming, friendly and fun.

Came on a taco Tuesday for a birthday and had such a lovely time. The servers were all super friendly and very helpful with advice for what to order. The tacos were so amazing, and the sides did not disappoint! Had a few cocktails as well and they were so good, best spicy margarita I’ve had in a while. Would recommend for a meal out.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican fusion food hang out in all of Bournemouth. Excellent Tacos with traditional and authentic taste yet with a twist of unique flavors like pomegranate garnish, chipotle mayo, toasted almonds all of which makes a fiesta for your taste buds. Very welcoming and friendly environment with a staff team that goes above and beyond to make your experience a pleasurable one I was helped by Alex at the bar who was extremely welcoming, very attentive in ensuring I was taken care of. He also knows his tequilas and mezcal, probably one of the most extensive collection of tequilas in town. A must try place if you are looking for good Mexican Street Food when in Bournemouth

Yelp
I saw the bad review and decided to check out if they got any better. I walked in and was greeted in a very polite way. Another person was my waitress for the night and was also very friendly. The place has a nice charm due to its wooden and brick walls together with mood lighting. The Mexican music fitted nicely to the food. The music is quite loud. This together with the seating being only medium comfortable make it a place for young rather than older people. The food it served in tapas style. Even the salad I had. In other words easy to share. Not on bowl full, but little bite size pieces. I saw this with the tacos on the table next to me too. Three small ones, rather than one large one. It did take long for the food to come out but that is just fine when the food is obviously freshly prepared. Also I find my dinner is over too quickly when I get my food minutes after ordering it. I am in a restaurant to enjoy. The prices are quite reasonable (although I didn't compare them with other Bournemouth restaurants. Freshly made non alcoholic fruit cocktails for 3,50. Salad from 5.50, a steak with salad for 12,95. Free WiFi although you have to like them on Facebook for it. I don't like that.

Yelp
My wife and I recently relocated to the UK, and finding Mexican food like what we were used to in the states has been tough. It was so very nice to find someplace with both an extensive tequila and mezcal list AND that serves traditional Mexican dishes. The service was wonderful, the food was delicious and we will happily return any time we are in town!

Yelp
The beef brisket tacos for £5.50 were delicious and very well presented. However they were very small for that price and the brisket wasn't as soft as it was expected.

Yelp
I came here with my mother when she was visiting the UK and we absolutely loved it! We had the refreshing salad, a trio tachos combo, one of them being the pork belly; sweet potato fries and Cajun chicken wings. While Ojo Rojo's theme is to bring in Mexican street style food, it is nothing like the other Mexican joints my mum and I have had before. We loved the ambiance, service was great, and located just above the shops in town centre, which then is a great stop for filling the tummy.

Yelp
Very helpful and polite staff. Booked in advance and we were sat immediately. Food came in surprisingly fast. Highly recommend the chicken tacos. Got a good vibe from the place too.

Yelp
I'm sorry guys but I had high hopes for this place and it just didn't go well. - The food was very very slow to come out - We had the tasting menu but none of the staff could remember that or seemingly knew what was happening (they kept bringing plates and telling us what it was then waiting for someone to claim it... it's the tasting menu we don;t know whats coming, just put it down) - They seemed very disorganised, we got some food but no plates, then we had a bottle of water for the table but no glasses. - When asked if we wanted anymore food we asked if that was the end of the tasting menu. The waitress seemed totally confused again, then eventually went to ask then came back and said it was finished. Then she asked about deserts but wasn't sure if they were included or not. When we asked questions she said "come on guys I feel like your teacher". - When we managed to establish that the desert's were not included but they would give us them for free because of the issues the same waitress said "we're giving you deserts as a favour because apparently you're not happy". Now I know that sometimes it can be busy and the kitchen can have issues... I've been there, but rude staff is not something that is acceptable in my book. The only reason I gave two stars was because the food was actually pretty tasty, presented well. I would go back for the food but sadly not with that service.

Yelp
Terrible experience. Okay food but service just lets everything down. Rude waiter who would not apologise for our hour and a half wait (!), waste of time. Will avoid in future.

Yelp
This place is great and different, tasty food, friendly staff and cool music. The interior is well thought out. I recommend you go upstairs to dine as its really romantic and quirky with a creative lighting installation. Down stairs in more for both eating and drinking(and the cocktails are tasty). I have been hear for lunch, dinner and for drinks for a friends birthday. Also just found out they do weekend breakfast so really looking forward to sampling that this weekend. But be warned they have tapas style menu so not all food comes out at the same time. but the staff make you aware of this. so if you are on time limit i suggest you make plenty of time. But this isn't a place you just grab food, this is a place that wants to give you an experience. RANDOM-But they have little board games and cards, which was so much fun to play when have a few drinking- Great little addition.
