The 14 Best Restaurants In Waterloo & South Bank - London - The Infatuation

"Okan is a tiny, bustling Osakan canteen that sits in the shadow of the London Eye, but is much more worthy of your time than the big wheel. This is the ideal spot for a post-work okonomiyaki-fuelled debrief with a co-worker. Just one, because it’s a tight space with a handful of tables crowded with stools. Ties are loosened, rounds of Asahi ordered, and those eating alone find themselves involuntarily tapping their foot to the Japanese rock music drifting out of the kitchen. All of the saucer-like okonomiyaki flying out to tables are good, but we like the tofu and kimchi one best." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley, sinead cranna

The 19 Best Solo Dining Spots In London

"One of the best ways to spend a solo day in London is to walk over Blackfriars Bridge, pretend that Red Stripe can in the Thames is an exotic breed of duck, and then check out something at the Tate Modern. Once you’re done with your cultured chin-stroking, head to Okan, a tiny, bustling Osakan canteen where saucer-like okonomiyaki flies out to the tables and feet tap along to the Japanese rock music drifting out of the kitchen. We like the tofu and tangy kimchi okonomiyaki best—it has a pleasingly crispy crust and comes with a generous squiggle of Kewpie mayo." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

Staff are fantastic. It is smallish tht gives you a vibe of being in Japan. Atmosphere is fab: again, gives that vibe of being in Japan. The prices are reasonable. We were walk in but got a lovely table immediately at 1830. The toilet is outside, accessible by a door code. Food was lovely.

Out of all our dining experiences since arriving in London on Saturday, Okan South Bank has truly impressed me. The authenticity of the Japanese cuisine and the staff's hospitality are unparalleled. It’s a lovely intimate setting. The staff's exceptional service is noteworthy, particularly Taka, who took the time to guide me through the extensive sake selection. His recommendations proved phenomenal, and I am grateful for his expertise. We were fortunate enough to meet the owner, Moto, who exuded warmth and graciousness. I eagerly anticipate returning to Okan and look forward to planning weekend trips to London solely for the purpose of dining here. If you are in London, I highly recommend visiting this culinary gem, which serves the finest food.

Lovely food but lacked any sophistication in delivery. They should explain the dishes being set down and we had to probe for recommendations when ordering. As a small place with staff they don’t seem to come enough and check and you have to call them and get attention. It was a good experience but nothing special and the best thing was meeting Taka the sommelier at the end of our meal who helped with sake choices. He said next time we should ask for him before we order. The atmosphere is very cafe style and could do with some excitement.

Amazing food and excellent service! We booked for the wrong date by mistake and they were kind enough to find us a spot on a Saturday night when they were fully booked. I still dream about the food here 😍 it's seriously that good... You almost forget that you're still in London when you're at the counter watching the chefs cook. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Okan is a hole-in-the-wall spot that’s absolutely worth checking out. The food is fresh, flavorful, and a nice change of pace from the usual options. The staff were friendly, and the menu offers something unique you do not find everywhere. It is a small space and can get a bit warm with the kitchen so close, but the quality of the food makes it worth it. A great stop if you are near South Bank and want something tasty and memorable.

NO HARD FEELINGS

I was just passing by and felt like trying some Japanese teppanyaki — glad I found this place! The decor really gives off a Japanese vibe, which immediately caught my eye. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Even on a hot and humid day, they thoughtfully served chilled tap water without hesitation, which I truly appreciated. I tried their grilled pancake (yaki-style). While it may not be exactly like what you’d find in Japan, it definitely satisfied my craving for it. A nice surprise overall — I’ll likely be back to try more dishes next time.

We came here again after great experiences before but this one knocked it out of the park, thanks to the delicious food and fantastic service. As per usual we went with a couple of starters and house sake, as well as ordering the house staple okonomiyaki prawn and the day's special wagyu. While both were great, the latter was so fantastic that we ordered another portion. All that being said, the difference was made by Taka (and his team) which not only made great food but provided incredible customer service and sake recommendations. Cant praise this place enough for genuine Japanese hospitality in a authentic setting.

This was an unexpected gem in an otherwise busy tourist hub within London. We enjoyed a variety of delicious and authentic Japanese bar food with a little Osakan twist. This place is great! We particularly enjoyed the Pork okra dish and Wagyu teppanyaki 🤤 Their yuzu ginger juice was really fresh and had real ginger in it! ❤️ We will be back! 😋
