What a nice & pleasant experience. I've been following the reviews of Okura for years but was a little apprehensive due to some of the reviews I've read expressing how loud the restaurant gets and their blasting music too.
A good longtime friend of mine comes here all the time and invited me as his guest...so I didn't really know what to expect because it was a TGIF Night.
Well, first of all I'd like to profess & confess that the music was not loud at all (perhaps they finally got the message ;-) and I enjoyed the tasteful & beautiful restaurant decor & vibe with my buddy at our nice 2-top table -- without having to SHOUT at each other over any loud music :-)
I love Japanese food & sushi and take it very seriously so I went into this with an open mind & heart, yet wanted to experience it traditionally like how I was taught by some amazing Japanese friends -- which is how I enjoy Japanese food the most when I opt not to eat strictly nigiri sushi.
We started off with Hamachi Carpaccio to share and it was triple-D-lishious & very fresh. Absolutely nothing wrong with this dish and could've eaten the entire plate myself ;-) But IMO, 5 pieces is an odd number to serve and prefer 6 because it's easier to split between 2/4/6 peeps.
One of my favorite things is an old-school traditional Salmon Skin Handroll which I blame on my Dad for talking me into trying one when I was a little kid.
Nowadays, most places haven't a clue how to make & prepare it. They don't include Gobo, also known as burdock root, which is a popular Japanese root vegetable that's a key ingredient in all salmon skin handrolls. Another key ingredient is bonito shavings. Most places don't even bother with that either and it's such a shame because it brings it all together along with the gobo & thinly sliced cucumber, for a nice crunch in perfect tastebud harmony, along with the toasted seaweed and salmon skin. Another key ingredient is Orange Tabiko (Masago) which is flying fish eggs. But Okura surprised me with including Ikura (salmon roe eggs) and Sea Greens which was a very nice touch. But I would've preferred it without both and the Tabiko (Masago) instead. Nonetheless, it was still excellent...and so was the Ponzu Sauce I asked for on the side, because Eel Sauce on Salmon Skin Handrolls (avocado too) is a big no-no and far from traditional. But Okura's handroll was nice & fat...and minus the ikura & sea greens, it was one of better salmon skin handrollls I've had -- especially since they didn't skimp on the salmon skin.
I'm a sucker for Bento Boxes because at times, I like to sample a little bit of everything -- especially the first time trying a new place.
I was very satisfied with my decision and the baked salmon in broth was insanely good and didn't want it to end, as well as the Salmon (Sake) Sashimi -- nice thick cuts that were flavorful; not fishy...and melted in my mouth. The Tempura was pretty good but I thought the Shrimp were rather small but the tempura batter was very good as well as the vegetables and tempura broth sauce. I was pleased to see not 4 nor 6 but 8 pieces of California Roll. It was pretty good but a little disappointing at the same time because I thought the Imitation Krab with a K mixture had too much mayo...and the roll itself was missing cucumber for a little crunch. Believe it or not, a little bit of cucs goes a long way and it screams for it when it's missing. Also, it was missing sesame seeds which I expect to see & eat and a "high-end" Japanese restaurant. A California Roll is not difficult to prepare and IMO it missed the mark. And thought the sushi rice was just okay too.
My buddy devoured his Mango Tango Roll and another roll I forget the name of. I tasted one of each and they very good and GIGANTIC.
The service was excellent...and once they figured out I'm a h2o dude, they filled my glass with more water than my bladder could handle :-)
We received all our food in a very timely manner which was very impressive at primetime Friday Night.
But the star of the Friday Night Evening Show was Okura'a Manager, Linda. She went above and beyond to make sure we were seated at a great table, were well taken care of throughout our dining experience...and she came by a few times to check in on us too.
Overall this was a very solid 4+ dining experience. Only reason why I'm not awarding Okura right now with a big high-5 is because I think a few details could've been better as expressed above. But this will not keep me from coming back with my wife next time for a round of bento boxes...Hamachi Carpaccio...and another Salmon Skin Handroll too.
Thank you Okura, and Linda for a very nice first-time dining experience.
