Can the Northern White Rhino Come Back from the Edge of Extinction?

"On my visit, I stayed at the Ol Pejeta Bushcamp, one of the lodges within the conservancy, and spent my days on game drives looking for rhinos, cheetahs, and lions. Guests can take part in a number of conservation activities, like visiting the anti-poaching dog unit, stopping by the chimpanzee sanctuary, and scheduling a visit to see Fatu and Najin, where they can get close to the rhinos and watch them feed."

Visiting Ol Pejeta Conservancy was an unforgettable experience! The conservancy is beautifully managed, and the commitment to wildlife protection is evident everywhere you go. A major highlight for me was the Chimpanzee Sanctuary — seeing the rescued chimps thriving in such a safe and natural environment was truly heart-warming. Another memorable moment was meeting Baraka, the blind rhino. Being able to get so close to him and learn about his story was both emotional and inspiring. The game drives were fantastic as well, with plenty of wildlife sightings and knowledgeable guides who made the experience even more meaningful. Ol Pejeta is a must-visit for anyone passionate about conservation and wildlife. Highly recommended!

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is absolutely amazing! Just a 30-minute drive from Fairmont, it’s the perfect place for a safari experience. We saw so many animals - lions, lots of rhinos, elephants, and many more. The roads are good and well maintained, making the drive through the park very comfortable. The staff were also very friendly and helpful throughout our visit. Truly a fantastic experience - highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!

One of the best maintened conservancy’s of Kenya . Hosting the big five . Hats off to the people who have turned this conservancy around . And the place to see the once near extinct rhino . With perfect weather throughout . For those who love nature and wildlife this is the place to visit . A mini Masai Mara with better weather conditions and all of the big five in one place . One of the best kept secrets of Kenya .

It was amazing to see the last 2 northern white rhinos in the world, and to see up close their conservation efforts to protect these magnificent animals, and to learn about all that they do to try and breed others species. We saw rhinos in the wild of the conservatory, as well as other animals in their care. We were able to feed Baracka, the blind black Rhino, that is also in their care and protection. This was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget!

Well managed conservancy, with great viewing opportunities for much of the megafauna in the region. One of the best places for rhinos in Kenya

Visited on 3rd Dec. 2024. As part of a school trip for our Tourism course at Dedan Kimathi University we had an amazing time at Ol Pejeta Conservancy!😊What makes Ol Pejeta so special? It is a home to Endangered Species (and I mean seriously endangered) 🦏 The last two northern white rhinos in the world—Najin and Fatu—live there under 24/7 armed protection. It’s sad but powerful to see them, knowing you're looking at a species on the edge of extinction. Black rhinos, which are critically endangered due to poaching, are also protected there. Ol Pejeta has one of the highest populations in East Africa. We got to meet Baraka- a blind rhino who resides there. He is well taken care of for sure. They even have a rescued chimpanzee sanctuary, which is the only one in Kenya, for chimps rescued from war zones and illegal trafficking in Central Africa.I have to admit that the chimpanzees made me so happy 😆they were so cheeky & intelligent.😅 My Honest & Helpful Guide: 1. Wildlife Galore! – We saw rhinos,zebras,elephants...the real deal! It honestly felt like being in a live Nat Geo episode. 2. Guided & Safe – The guides were super knowledgeable and made the experience more insightful (and safe, of course). 3. Conservation Goals – You don’t just visit, you learn! Ol Pejeta does serious work in protecting endangered species – it makes you respect nature more. 4. No Littering, Seriously 🚫 – They are strict about plastic and trash. It’s clean for a reason. Be kind to the environment. 5. Pack Smart – Snacks, enough water, and maybe your favorite chocolate bar. Food facilities are limited (unless it changed recently). 6. Take PHOTOS 📸 – I can't say this enough! Memories fade but photos stick around. Don’t be like me – my phone died early and I missed out. 😭 7. Stay Curious – Ask questions, explore more, and take in the views. It’s a mix of fun, learning, and beautiful moments. Enjoy!!!

Wonderful park. We saw so many animals - 4 of the big 5 and hundreds of grazers on the grasses and lots of babies and young ones. So many elephants passing through the park this time of year; there were around 50 one afternoon before dusk. Also saw bat-eared foxes, spotted hyenas, lions on a hunt, and so many rhinos. We stayed onsite at their Pelican House and did several of the extra (paid) activities and highly recommend all of it. All of the staff, guides, and rangers we met were welcoming and knowledgeable. We did the Wildlife Integration, K9 Tracking, Rhino Monitoring, Lion Monitoring, Northern White Rhino visit, and the Bush Walk. We learned so much about the animals, the local fauna, and all the ways the park has worked to earn their reputation as a shining example of conservation and local engagement. The Northern White Rhinos is really a special opportunity. They are the last two on earth and gentle giants who you can pet (from the truck) while they eat treats and you learn from their caregivers. Pelican House is a lovely spot - we had lots of animals come right up to the water behind the house and heard elephants at night. The staff who manages it - housekeeper, chef, night guard, and groundskeeper - were all so nice and helpful. We also booked it with catering which seemed very reasonable for what we received. We also hired a driver and car from Road Trip Africa, which we'd recommend, though the driver opted to stay outside the park. Fantastic experience.
