Olaizola Jatetxea in Oiatzun, Tornola kalea 2, is a traditional basque food restaurant which is a great value for money. It is located within the Natural Park Peñas de Aia next to the Oiartzun river in the region with the same name. It's well-known to people who live in the area and surroundings. To get there, you need to drive or walk on the Bidegorri, which is a walk and cycle path, because there is no public transportation.
When you walk in, you notice the walls built with big stones and superficially big wooden columns and large wooden tables with long benches. Also, you can find a big dinner room with nice tables and chairs. During the week it is less crowded compared with the weekend when you need to wait for some minutes to find a place because the restaurant is quite famous.
There is a great range of exciting and tasty traditional basque dishes. You can enjoy a la carte and specials menus with a wide variety of starters, mains and desserts. Starters include a variety of salads, scrambled eggs with mushrooms and mixed fried dishes. There is also a long range of main courses, from cod fish or grilled Monkfish to T-Bone steak or wild boar and Ox-tail stew. These are accompanied by reasonably-priced wines, champagnes, cider, spirits and soft drinks.
I asked the special menu number four which included 3 starters, as well as having one main course of a wide range, dessert, a bottle of wine and coffee. I started with squid salad, which was really tasty. My companion ordered leek and prawn filled cake, which was delicious. For my main course, I really enjoyed my beef steak of 500g, as the meat was really tender. Although my guest's grilled Seabass looked extremely appetising. For desserts, we had Xamingoxo, typical Navarre dessert, and apple pie. Both were absolutely delicious.
One of the most attractive aspects of Olaizola Jatetxea is the prices, our meal for 2 cost £ 25 each, drink included, which was excellent value for money.
On balance, if you fancy coming at weekends keep in mind the car park is not big enough, so maybe you need to wait some minutes to get a space to park. Olaizola Jatetxea is an excellent and atmospheric place to eat a nice and tasty meal which is highly recommended for all, including families.
