After visiting the state capitol, my husband and I decided to check out the Olbrich Botanical Gardens where there is free parking. I do want to mention that because the badger is the state animal, you will see a badger sculpture/ statue at the entrance, decorated with blue skies and white clouds with red flowers. There is also a hippy badger at the park across the street (just in case you wish to track down some of these cute badgers during your travels).
The botanical garden is free, but if you wish to visit the Bolz Conservatory, it only cost $2. But there is free admission for that on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am -12 pm. Please note that the conservatory closes at 4 pm but the garden and lobby closes at 8 pm if you are visiting between April through August. September through October, the garden closes at 6 pm and November through March, the garden closes at 4 pm.
On our visit, on a Wednesday, shortly before 4 pm, my husband and I came by. We were able to catch the tram tour, which is free to patrons but the driver does accept tips.
The tram tour is relatively short, maybe 20 or 30 minutes. The tour guide just briefly points out some flowers and trees and makes suggestions for places to visit and things to look out for. I do want to highlight that the tour guide did tell us about the Thai Pavilion or Thai Sala. This is the only 1 in the USA, which was a gift from the Thai Government (which was given to University of Wisconsin- Madison, which was placed here).
This pavilion was built with no nails or screws. Each piece fits together like a puzzle, perfectly fitted. The wood used to make the pavilion is out of teak wood and was specially hand carved. The pavilion is covered in gold leaf and red and black laquer. Unfortunately the gold leaf is slowly fading as visitors touch it, which is sad to see it wearing down (so try now to touch it if you come for a visit).
The pavilion is supposed to be a place to gather with family/ friends for picnics and celebrations, to seek shelter from rainy weather or from the hash sun's rays. The pavilion is supposed to symbolize respect for learning and to help for creating a bond with Thailand and the University of Wisconsin.
Please note that tram tours have been suspended until May 2020 due to construction in the garden that does impart parts of the tram tour path.
It amazes me that this garden is free, with it's beautiful flowers and plants that adore the pathways. There are many beautiful backdrops that would make for some gorgeous photos (you can actually rent this venue for a wedding).
If you have a chance, I highly recommend making a stop. Come early so that you can check out the conservatory.
