On the Grid : Old Botanical Garden

"The Old Botanical Garden was opened in 1884 and is today considered a natural and cultural monument. The little braided garden area is perfect for a romantic Sunday walk, enjoying the view over the Kiel Canal from the look-out or attending one of the readings at the literary house. Open daily: 9am – 7pm Closing hours vary from season to season." - Carina Hoffmann & Petrina Meier

"A Historic Botanical Garden in the Center of the City Zurich’s original botanical garden, dating back to 1837, has been replaced by the larger Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich with its sheer size and breadth of plants on the edges of the city, but locals still love the former for its intrinsic charm. The quiet, leafy park houses a glass pavilion dating back to 1851 and a medieval herb garden, all idyllically located next to the Schanzengraben canal. Google
It is such a beautiful place, and the Gessner garden is such a great idea on how to present the history of medicine. The navigation through the garden is very simple, so even I didn't get lost and found what I was looking for. Some of the information about the garden is both in English and in German, which is nice to see, but than comes the Gessner garden, the reason why I visited. And there the visitor doesnt get anything else than German. There is a little spot for leaflets in French, Italian and English, but the leaflets aren't there anymore, and it seems like they haven't been there for quite some time now. Which is very unfortunate. I would have loved to know what plants am I looking at and why Gessner and his contemporaries considered them important.

Nice place for walking and calm, but not so beautiful as the university botanical garden. Free entrance

Lovely oasis on a hill with good views. Plenty of nesting birds in and viewed from the Old Botanical Garden and thoughtful planting within. Free to enter and good opening hours.

Its free entrance. In summer is nicer because you have more colors, in winter is still nice because it is a nice place to walk and have a lunch. In a small space you can clima some meterse and have a small view of Zurich, without going far away. The pavillon is closed during Winter, it is small but cute. Next to it there are public free bathrooms, very clean and spacious. There is no parking at all, not inside (only for staff) not blue zone, nothing. There are some white zones for 1fr (30min), 3fr (1hour) or 7.5fr (2 hr) max.

Chill little park area. Was nice to have a wander around and enjoy the greenery. Spotted a few locals having their lunch amongst the plants.

The smallest botanical garden I have been, you can see everything in 10 minutes - not worth the time and effort to visit

Yelp
This is a small little garden that sits by the river. A really nice place to take a breather. Even though it's small, it's really dense and built on a hill so it hides the city really well. I spent a few hours just reading here.

Yelp
I love the unfussy, under-hyped, simply lovely Old Botanic Garden. When I find myself burnt out by lunch time 'cause I've been running around since early morning and I'm in dire need of some quiet time, I just grab a to-go sandwich or salad from Coop, Babu's or Hiltl (all at walking distance) and come here to eat and read. I originally found it by chance, walking alongside the Schanzengraben, but I immediately loved it. It's small, but easy to get to and fun (but relatively quick) to explore, especially if you have kids in tow; and it makes for a great spot for an impromptu lunchtime picnic! It's very quiet, so it's great if you just want to chill and read a book; or even take a short nap on the grass, if the mood strikes ;-) The small octagonal greenhouse is lovely; sometimes it gets rented out for private dinners or performances. There aren't very many benches, but if you are anything like me, you probably prefer to sit on the grass - and it's quite nice here, particularly from late spring to early fall (or as long as the weather holds.)

Yelp
A great place to take your take-away lunch to, if you are brave enough to climb the steep walkway all the way to the top, you are rewarded with plenty of benches and a quiet atmosphere with a nice view. Plenty of lunch spots around in walking distance (Hiltl, etc.) and usually an open spot should be available.
