The Old Bridge (Karl Theodor Bridge, a German nobleman who had it constructed) in Heidelberg is a beautiful, historic, walkway, spanning the Neckar river. It was built in 1788, connecting the Old Town to the Eastern part of the city.
There have been eight different bridges on this site since the 13th century. The Germans blew up part of it during the war as well. At the old city end is a fantastic guard house and gate with a portcullis and two, white, conical towers. A statue of John of Nepokuk is also here, a saint of Bohemia.
It offers lovely views of the city as well as interesting statues, including a bronze monkey statue, that is newer, but a monkey statue has been here since the 15th century. It is meant to represents those who crossed over it, to look over their shoulders at where they’ve come from, as they are no better than the people on the other side. A good motto to remember.
