How to Visit Bangkok on a Budget

"Old Capital Bike Inn is a heritage hotel located a 10-minute walk from the Golden Mount (Wat Sa Ket Ratchaworamahawihan). It features 10 rooms with a bicycle theme. Complimentary nighttime bicycle tours and loaner bikes provide a free and fun alternative to tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis." - Margot Bigg Margot Bigg Margot Bigg is a freelance travel writer and editor who has spent most of her adult life traveling and living overseas. Old Capital Bike Inn

"Bangkok’s first true B&B, the eight-room inn is run by a warm, well-traveled proprietress and her son, who guides guests to the hippie-chic nightlife along Khao San Road. There are four room types, each with its own charm: The bath products in Rice make the best souvenirs, Lemongrass comes with an enchanting tropical garden, Jasmine has painted murals, and Orchid a four-poster bed. Wi-Fi access, AC, and powerful showers in the bathrooms make travelers wonder if they’ve set foot in an urban myth of clean, charming, and affordable accommodations. Guests can augment the inexpensive room rate with a small contribution, matched by the hotel, to four worthy charities."

Old Capital Bike Inn, Bangkok, Thailand - Explore & Book

"Opened in 2005, this was one of the city's first boutique guesthouses. Thoughtfully converted from a 1940s shophouse, it sits on Ratanakosin Island in the middle of Bangkok's historic quarter and has been in the care of the owners' family for 7 generations. It's still arguably its homeliest place to stay, and the warm service from owner, Khun Jason, and his small team is second-to-none. You really are treated like old friends from the moment you walk through the door. Stepping into the tearoom-esque lobby is to be transported into a laidback but classy olde-worlde realm. Jazzy guitar music plays, ornate birdcages from Chiang Mai stand tall, and much of the structure came from Ayuthaya, Thailand’s ancient capital (now specialising in reclaimed teak from dismantled old Central Thai wooden houses). There are 10 charmingly unique rooms with antique hanging oil lamps, hand-painted porcelain washbasins and cute murals. Drift around the corridors and you'll find a glass walkway directly under a roof skylight, to naturally light as much of the hotel as possible, and tree-root-like banisters. Borrow one of their beautiful vintage bikes and explore the capital's cultural delights, or join one of the hotel's fantastic night bike tours to see the city after dark. For an affordable, friendly stay in the heart of Bangkok, you won't find any better. Highs A genuine sanctuary hidden on a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok Impressively blends old-world charm with modern touches, so no sacrifice in comfort Home-away-from-home ambiance with personal helpful service. Chances are owner Khun Jason will be behind the reception to offer great advice and recommendations Impressive green credentials - charity donations at check-in matched by the hotel, solar heating, bedding and towels changed upon request, no throwaway toiletries to name a few Close to Bangkok's main historical landmarks: the Golden Mountain temple is opposite; the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha are a 20-minute walk Lows There's long-term construction work opposite the hotel, so expect some noise during the day and dust outside. Saying this, work stops by the evening and it didn't impact our stay at all Although all rooms are lovingly conceived, some are small, lighting can be subdued, the stairs to mezzanines are steep and creeky, and storage can be limited Limited outdoor space and no onsite pool, though guests can use a neighbouring hotel's pool for a very small fee A little far from Bangkok's main shopping areas such as Sukhumvit" - Marta Purwin

My partner and I stayed at OCB for four nights during our tour of Thailand in November 2025, and we had the most delightful stay! The hotel is cute, quaint, and very centrally located in Old City, Bangkok. We were able to easily access a variety of landmarks via foot, ferry, or tuk tuks/taxis—Reclining Buddha, Wat Arun, Grand Palace, Rajadamnern Stadium, Chinatown, Iconsiam, and so much more! The hotel staff were so kind and accommodating, and had lots of helpful tips on ways to get around, the best times to check out certain sights and attractions, and things to do/see/eat. The breakfasts were DELICIOUS, and we really loved being able to place our order the day before. The rooms are beautiful, and you can see how much care they’ve put into the place over many decades they’ve been in operation. We especially loved the bike tour, which took us on a wonderful adventure through Old City. It was such a great experience that even a little downpour during the tour didn’t dampen our mood, or the experience. I can’t thank the staff enough for making us feel so welcome and providing such a lovely stay. I’m looking forward to visiting Bangkok again and having another stay the OCB!

Authentic and charming stay, made exceptional by the lovely and knowledgeable staff. |From the moment of arrival, we were welcomed by the calm and warmth from Deefly. Offered a refreshing welcome drink and delicious snack and given a moment to adjust to the surrounds. |The gentle recommendations were invaluable, with the pad Thai restaurant shown on the provided map (Thip Sami) being absolutely one of the best we’ve had in Bangkok! |The room had a beautiful rustic charm, with comfortable bed and plenty of room for relaxing if needed. You felt as though your experience and wellbeing were at the heart of this stay, with even small gifts and a note left on your bed each day! |Breakfast was plentiful with almost a starter main, dessert as an option and it was delicious too, even takeaway breakfast was provided to us on an early departure. |A little care is needed on the stairs to the room as no banister and you do need to carry luggage as no lift, but the creaks and quirks add to the charm |Hotel is located walking distance to temples and Kho San Road|Honestly one of the best and most personal stays we’ve had. Thank you

Our stay in the family suite at Old Capital Bike Inn was unforgettable. The space was full of charm and history, blending comfort and character perfectly. The daily breakfast was one of the best parts of our mornings — fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. We joined the free guided bike tour and it was a highlight, giving a unique perspective of Bangkok, guided by someone who clearly loves their city. What really made this place stand out, though, was the people. Every single member of the staff went above and beyond — they were warm, attentive, and genuinely cared about making our stay special. You can feel the love and pride they put into every detail. We left feeling not just rested, but connected to the city and the culture. Highly recommend this boutique hotel to anyone visiting Bangkok!

This place is amazing, especially the people who work there! They are so friendly, kind and helpful. I instantly felt at home. The building and rooms are cosy and beautiful and the location can't be beat. Near several major hotspots. They even have bicycles you can use, and offer a night time bicycle tour as well (ask them for day and time). I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here on a quick 24 hour stopover in Bangkok and couldn’t have been happier with our choice! The character and decor is so unique and charming, it’s in a fantastic location, and the staff are so friendly and helpful and will give you any tips you need to make the most of your time in the city. The breakfast and coffee is fresh and delicious as well. There is construction going on outside but they don’t work at night and there are safe walkways for getting around during the day, so there is no disruption. HIGHLY recommended!

We hade a wonderful stay at this hotel. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The breakfast is delicious and tips/advice on what to do in Bangkok. They noticed us upfront about the new metro station being build across the street which didn’t cause any issue to us since there was no noise or anything. Really, you must stay here when going to Bangkok. It’s authentic, it’s relaxing and feels a bit like coming home after a long day in the busy city. Thank you! Hope we can visit again some time.

The most beautiful and charming hotel in Bangkok. Having been to Bangkok on many occasions, this is, by far, the best hotel I've ever stayed at. From the warm welcome service with a refreshing cold drink, to the clean, charming room—complete with thoughtful touches like bath salts—to the incredible breakfast spread, everything was perfect. The entire team is warm, welcoming, caring, and genuinely dedicated to ensuring you have the best possible experience in Bangkok. I had many lovely conversations, met other great guests, and enjoyed the best sleep. I also love the charming, walkable neighborhood with so many great attractions nearby. This was the perfect two-night stay, and I'm already looking forward to coming back.

This hotel was perfect for our stay in Bangkok and I highly recommend it. It is a gem with beautiful decor in the perfect location. The staff were attentive and helpful, offering advice on places to visit and eat. In the evening we joined the free guided bike tour run by Jason which was super fun and informative. We stayed in the Queen Loft Suite which is opposite the construction site however, we could not hear a sound so do not worry.
