I absolutely love this hotel! It has a wonderfully traditional feel, just like the old inns you see in movies. The atmosphere is cozy and full of character, making it the perfect place to stay. The pub menu is fantastic, and the hotel's location is ideal right near walking and hiking trails, which makes exploring the area so easy. It perfectly matches the charm of the Lake District authentic, not too posh or modern, just the right balance of comfort and tradition. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Good value clean, comfy, offering good basic Cumbrian accommodation at a realistic price that is set for season and doesn't rip you off at busy times at an amazing unique location at the bottom of the Langdale Valley. Excellent bar with well kept beer, good value quality pub food. Excellent staff in an establishment used by the local population as well as tourists .

Having camped nearby and drank at the ODG many times over the years, I fancied a stay in the hotel because I was on my own this time. I also took my dog. I booked a single room with separate bathroom and was more than pleased to have been given a free upgrade to a room with an ensuite bathroom. I did see a separate bathroon in the hall and it was nice so don't think I'd have complained had I had my orginal room... My room was lovely and cosy. No TV which is fine, but wifi didn't work in my room. There is no phone signal either. It wasn't a problem for a couple of days but perhaps a slight one for longer, although I could get good wifi in the main body of the hotel. I ate and drank in the bar and hotel at night and staff were helpful. Food was very reasonably priced and very nice. Breakfast was served in the lounge because I had my dog with me but that was no great difficulty, other than not being able to top my coffee up so easily! Breakfast was really good. I felt very comfortable and not at all awkward on my own. Dog loved it too and was very chipper with people making a fuss of him. Hope to visit again soon.

It’s nostalgic, ok for a beer, food is very limited in terms of choice but large portions, the microwave is busy. I’ve not been in the rooms so I couldn’t honestly say but from the pics it looks classic. A dog pooing Calendar behind the bar is not my vibe to look at whilst slurping my pint and ordering a pie, but whatever floats your boat I suppose… if you’re into that then crack on 👀. Toilets should come with a health warning so be careful in there!!! You’ll see when you go in…. If is wet (more than likely) the pub floor is like an icing rink so again watch your step, it can get dicey. Staff seem half pleasant, depends really, hit and miss I’d say, can be nice but can seem vexed at times if it’s busy, which to be fair it can get that way as there’s not much else going on if you’re not up for a walk down the road. Given by the choice of decor (dog poo calendar) I’d say there’s a certain type of humour, not sure what but I’m sure there is. Staff / managers / owners in here have always been ‘out there’ so to speak. They don’t need to try, walkers will always, I guess, walk in… good service is not required or in the job spec. Vintage and again, nostalgic… Don’t get me wrong, I love a bar with character and this does have that and I will be hypocritical and return, this I have no doubt… there’s little else… Good spot though

I love visiting this pub, but not any more. The older man rude and must hate his job, but the younger is lovely and polite. No care in food very greasy. Rooms dated and no tv. Such a shame as used to my favourite get away pub

Google
Great beautiful location great little pub but it seriously needs to consider outside heaters or electric timed heaters outside of pub. To allow customers to sit outside and not be rammed inside on the cold winter weekend Great pub tho Great fireplace needs outside heating tho

brilliant pub, great food, specials were really good for vegetarians too. Nice selection of ales. The bar is attached to the hotel and at end of the valley its a beautiful location, especially sitting outside on their many benches, a perfect stop to end at after a long walk.

Yelp
Don't let the Ambleside address fool you. The Old Dungeon Ghyll is up at the end of Great Langdale, and surrounded by challenging climbing and walking country. It's worth the journey, to sample the range of real ales on offer in the Hiker's Bar. The bar meals come in large portions and are home-made with local produce. I havn't stayed at the hotel, but it has a good reputation. It does look distinctly up market of the pub, which is less well lit, cosy and older.
