This is a hikers hotel and it knows it's a hikers hotel. It's boot and dog friendly. It's probably best described as rustic. The staff are just the best. The food is delicious and exactly what you want to eat at the end of a hike. It's a home from home and best described as a big warm hug after you have been battling the elements all day. I just love this place x

We love to walk around here and park in this National Trust car park. After our walk we pop into the climbers bar for a quick drink and sometimes something to eat. This time, though, the barman wasn't particularly friendly. He didn't seem happy to be there hence not 5 stars for service. That said, in the years we've been coming here (25+ years) this is our first experience of only 4 star service. Perhaps it was a one-off. 🤞

After a long walk had a great pint in here. So many people were ordering chips we joined in. Fabulous. You can keep you Claridges high teas, give me a bowl of chips any day. Memorable moment!

This is more the pub than the Hotel It was our favourite and we walk regularly along the valley to the Walkers Bar which is perfect for us walkers but!!. We always have Old Peculiar OP. Today there was none and none till the 1st of October. A waste of a walk and we won't be going there for a while.

A fantastic place to side outside and enjoy a drink after a day on the mountains. Decent menu…. Recommend the pie!

This is a great old hotel with tons of character set in a superb location. Yes it needs a little updating but I hope if/when it does happen they keep the look it currently has. Booking and checkin was easy to do and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The Walkers Bar has a great selection of ales and again a great atmosphere to enjoy a well earned pint or three. The bedroom was small, very clean but one of the best nights sleep we had while walking the Cumbria Way, very quiet, pitch black and the beds were super comfy. Choice of food was basic but absolutely great ( the pies we had were Steak and Ale and Chicken, Ham and Leek). Breakfast was just as good with a varied choice. Will return again and highly recommend.

This place is legendary! I've been coming here for over 40 years and it never disappoints. After a long day in the wonderful langdale mountains there's nothing better than a couple of good pints and Cumberland sausage dinner.

Yelp
Don't let the Ambleside address fool you. The Old Dungeon Ghyll is up at the end of Great Langdale, and surrounded by challenging climbing and walking country. It's worth the journey, to sample the range of real ales on offer in the Hiker's Bar. The bar meals come in large portions and are home-made with local produce. I havn't stayed at the hotel, but it has a good reputation. It does look distinctly up market of the pub, which is less well lit, cosy and older.
