This is a hikers hotel and it knows it's a hikers hotel. It's boot and dog friendly. It's probably best described as rustic. The staff are just the best. The food is delicious and exactly what you want to eat at the end of a hike. It's a home from home and best described as a big warm hug after you have been battling the elements all day. I just love this place x

This place is legendary! I've been coming here for over 40 years and it never disappoints. After a long day in the wonderful langdale mountains there's nothing better than a couple of good pints and Cumberland sausage dinner.

I've been a fairly frequent customer here for more years than I care to think about - living within a forty-five minute drive. However, this was my first visit post C19. The setting and physical atmosphere are outstanding. The heritage,if you care to look into it, is amazing. There's a good selection of beers. However, on this visit the bar and serving staff were unwelcoming to the extent that I nearly cancelled my order and left. The sandwich I bought was ok, but accompanied by a very wet salad and dressing which rendered it soggy. I know perfectly well that I shall return before very long, despite my misgivings in this review. I wonder if it just depends on timing?

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for four nights last week and it was incredible. We spent every day hiking and the weather was perfect, it was lovely coming back to the ODG each day to a lovely meal and a clean room. Have been here quite a few times after hikes and always wanted to stay, so glad I have done now the place is so authentic.

We (a family of 4 + dog) have just returned from a great weekend at The Old Dungeon Ghyll. We've had such a lovely time. Staff are so accomodating and nice. Our room was on the top floor with its own private bathroom along a short corridor. Amazing views down and across Langdale. Super comfy beds, we all slept brilliantly. Delicious breakfast, our son discovered his love for fried bread 🤣. Dogs are understandably not allowed in the main dining area, so the lovely staff set us up in the residents bar each morning. We will look forward to a return visit.

This is a great old hotel with tons of character set in a superb location. Yes it needs a little updating but I hope if/when it does happen they keep the look it currently has. Booking and checkin was easy to do and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The Walkers Bar has a great selection of ales and again a great atmosphere to enjoy a well earned pint or three. The bedroom was small, very clean but one of the best nights sleep we had while walking the Cumbria Way, very quiet, pitch black and the beds were super comfy. Choice of food was basic but absolutely great ( the pies we had were Steak and Ale and Chicken, Ham and Leek). Breakfast was just as good with a varied choice. Will return again and highly recommend.

I absolutely love this hotel! It has a wonderfully traditional feel, just like the old inns you see in movies. The atmosphere is cozy and full of character, making it the perfect place to stay. The pub menu is fantastic, and the hotel's location is ideal right near walking and hiking trails, which makes exploring the area so easy. It perfectly matches the charm of the Lake District authentic, not too posh or modern, just the right balance of comfort and tradition. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Put 3 stars for rooms because I didn't stay there but the overall vibe is amazing... friendly staff and great food, where else can you go where you get a decent pie and a coke for less than £20, full belly and warm body... what more can you ask for... thanks so much to all the staff for making it such a warm and friendly place 😊

Yelp
Don't let the Ambleside address fool you. The Old Dungeon Ghyll is up at the end of Great Langdale, and surrounded by challenging climbing and walking country. It's worth the journey, to sample the range of real ales on offer in the Hiker's Bar. The bar meals come in large portions and are home-made with local produce. I havn't stayed at the hotel, but it has a good reputation. It does look distinctly up market of the pub, which is less well lit, cosy and older.
