Ultimate Guide to Yellowstone National Park

"Old Faithful Inn, built in 1903, is right by the eponymous geyser and is considered a work of art with historical charm. Some rooms have bathrooms, while older rooms require guests to use a shared bathroom down the hall." - Travel + Leisure Editors

10 Perfect Days in Big Sky Country

"The Old Faithful Inn is simply a mountain man’s log cabin on an epic scale. The renovated rooms look identical to those at the Lake Yellowstone but the lobby is a soaring, seven-story affair crafted of gnarled wood beams."

I am rating the restaurant. The building itself is beautiful. I made restaurant reservations because I heard the building was historic and we wanted to check it out. I was disappointed that they seated us in a newer section of the building that did not have the historic vibe we were looking for. We got the buffet and it was just alright. Food was not labeled well and no one was really around to answer questions we had about it. The best food was the croutons (not homemade) or Mac and cheese. Arriving and leaving was the best part of the experience because there was live music in the atrium, which we could not hear from the corner they squeezed us into. We probably would have been better off not eating there and just getting drinks in the lounge. I have to be honest. I’m a little uneasy about these xanterra people managing and operating everything in this park under the banner of Yellowstone. I feel as if it should be national park staff and hope the profit is going back to the park

One of a kind experience of staying inside the old house section of the Inn. This historical building has so many stories to tell about the craftsmanship of men who braved the seasons to create this masterpiece in the center of nowhere in 1903-04. Beautiful details. Don't miss their Architecture/history tours that happen multiple times everyday to know how it was built and how people lived here in old days. We stayed on the first floor of the old house. Rooms are dark but cool. Bathrooms are shared, however very clean and I didn't have to wait even once to use the restroom or bathroom during our 2 nights stay. There's a washbasin inside the rooms, room service refreshes towels and beds everyday (which is generally becoming so rare these days) All the staff we talked to were friendly. A lot of new staff were in their first couple weeks of summer jobs and were still learning, but still very kind and eager to help. Live music during the evenings was like cherry on the top. Loved chill evenings here. They update the times of Old Faithful eruptions. If you are too lazy to go out on the boardwalk, you can watch it from the front patio as well (or if you have room in the wing with the view, you can watch it from there) Must visit!

I really appreciate the security guard Elle. She treated everyone with respect and kindness, while still being very professional. It wasn’t just about keeping the place safe, she made my family and I feel comfortable and cared for. It’s rare to meet someone who takes their job seriously but also has such a genuine attitude. Thank you for going above and beyond. The hotel itself was like you traveled back in time, its great for families or for traveling Solo.

Your experience at the Old Faithful Inn will depend on expectations. This is a National Park Service hotel, so you are paying almost entirely for the location and the history of the original property, not for anything else. We view it more like camping plus a few basic ammenities (toilet, electricity, shelter, bed, and potable water). This was when we occasionally got hot water, it was just a bonus. We were staying in a "newer" wing, which had hallways resembling The Shining. All that being said, being able to see the area before 9am and after 6pm was incredible and 100% worth the price. We mostly avoided the food, it looked like a combination of airport/stadium concessions and a mediocre airport hotel buffet you would get at a corporate conference. The place is 2.5 hours away from civilization, so adjust expectations accordingly. You also won't be able to get parking between 10am and 6pm until after Old Faithful goes off. Be prepared to walk.

Google
Amazing historical building, worth a stay in the original rooms. We did one night in the old builing second floor with a family of four (two young kids) for one night. The kids were nervous about the shared bathrooms but the bathrooms were clean and we hardly saw anyone else in there. The showers in particular were nicer than I expected with marble partitions and period tile work. Sleeping in the old room in July meant setting up the fan provided but with a window cracked it wasn’t too bad. Loved the bar on the second floor with a deck for sipping your drink while we wait for the next eruption. Dining room was also gorgeous and the buffet was good. Overall this is a magnificent historical bustling yet cozy hotel.

Visited and took the tour. Tour was free and the guide had a mic so it was easier to hear her in the crowded, busy space. The entire area around old faithful was very crowded - almost like Disneyworld. But the hotel was amazing even with lots of people. I would have liked to eat in the dining room but the line was extremely long.

Google
I did not stay here at this Hotel but I utilized their tour services. I took a "Yellowstone in a Day Tour" which lasted from 7:45am - 5:30ish pm to which I will never forget!!! I took a solo cross country road trip to Yellowstone just to camp and took this tour. My feedback is below: Donald was our tour guide and he was amazing! He was fun, friendly and professional! His tour is among one of the best I've ever been on, anywhere!! He showed us all of the main spots of the park and some more immersed cool views with and without wildlife. Yellowstone Park should really commend his work and give him some cool recognition!!! (Maybe name something in the park after him) Walking into Old Faithful Inn is breathe taking due to its architecture (just walk inside and look up in the main hall) All of the staff beyond the tour was helpful and respectful. I encourage you to take a journey to Yellowstone. Don't knock the tour

We stayed in the east wing with a view of Old Faithful for over $1,000/night. I’ve never been so disappointed in a room. It was dirty & outdated and on top of that you could hear every sound from the hallway, room next door, etc. There was mold in the bathroom on both the inside and outside of the tub and we woke up to so many gnats. The food in both places we ate (bar and dining room) was overpriced and mediocre. The lobby is really cool but do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. I really wanted to love it but we left early and drove 6 hours to our next destination and stayed in a Holiday Inn Express that was about a tenth of the cost and so much more pleasant.

Yelp
The food is surprisingly good, especially the prime rib at dinner. It's big enough for two to share. It was moist and tender and flavorful. At lunch they serve the prime rib sandwich and that was also very good, alongside a small salad. For breakfast and dinner they offer a buffet but we didn't try the dinner buffet. The breakfast buffet costs $18.25 pp so it is more economical than ordering à la carte. It was very similar to the breakfast buffet at Mammoth Hot Springs hotel dining room. Both are managed by Xanterra so the similar menus and offerings make sense. Hot foods include scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, and cold foods include a variety of fresh fruits, yogurt, pastries, cereals. The wait staff are mostly young people from all over the United States and other foreign countries. They have been well trained and seem very professional.

Yelp
Such a shame. An iconic location. Gorgeous nature and serenity. Historic craftsmanship hotel. Breathtaking old log construction. Absolutely disgraceful and embarrassing food quality. Falafel is definitely supplied from an outside supplier (probably pre-frozen). No Tahini sauce or no fresh letttuce, cucumber. Just a crap out of packaged lettuce. Same pre-made, disaster Falafel on oily "pita" bread. The server was a nice lady from Florida. Please step up your quality and hire a cook or a chef who takes some pride in what they serve millions of visitors from around the world.

Yelp
When the restaurants are limited within Yellowstone National Park, we unfortunately came to this restaurant during our three day stay in Old Faithful Inn. My stars on this review is for the ambience along which was pretty neat with how historic and rustic the dining room is. We initially considered the buffet but with $48 per person and but the only things I would have ate were likely the mashed potatoes and the mac and cheese. The remainder of the options were sad looking entrees of dried chicken, beef brisket, a few vegetable sides that did not look appetizing. My husband got the prime rib which he enjoyed and I chose the potato gnocchi...which tasted like someone poured a can of pesto on cooked gnocchi and called it a day. It was not flavorful and had a weird texture to the sauce. The drinks were good but for $18 per glass of wine and $15-20 per cocktail, the next night we opted to buy a bottle of wine at the grocery store and split that while picnicking outside instead.

Yelp
We made dinner reservations for the two nights we were staying at the Inn. The first night, we were seated at the tiniest table for two that I have ever experienced, and right in front of the buffet (they were quite busy). We opted against the buffet (it did not look appetizing). I got the fish, which was done well, and my husband got prime rib, which was mediocre. We each had the "seasonal vegetable," which was Brussels sprouts - they were hard/underdone. My husband was offered a refill on his tea, which ended up costing another $3.75 (we were surprised that the refill wasn't free). The next morning we wanted to eat breakfast at the Lodge, but a storm was rolling in, so we went back to the dining room at the Inn. I often enjoy eating vegetarian, so I ordered the vegetarian skillet/bowl without cheese. It was a HUGE pile of seasoned hash browns (diced potatoes) with a few peppers mixed in. The hash browns tasted good, but in the end I ate all the peppers out and still probably left two serving's worth of potatoes in the bowl. My husband had eggs "over medium," which were barely cooked, and French toast, which was burnt on the edges. The next night, back to the dining room as we had the reservation already. The menu was the same. Seating was marginally better (a larger table, off to the side of the buffet). As I'd previously eaten the fish, I ordered a pretzel with beer cheese and a Hefeweizen (which was nice). The pretzel was fine, not the best I've eaten but good, and the beer cheese was tasty. They did give 2 large pretzels so it was plenty. My husband had the dry cider (it was quite dry, good) with fried chicken (cooked and seasoned well), mashed potatoes, and slaw (which was actually quite good - and he is particular about slaw). For dessert, I had the no sugar added/low fat Butter pecan ice cream (a bit bland, but that's to be expected). Hubs had the best item in the restaurant - Huckleberry ice cream - the waiter talked it up and it was in fact delicious. Service was not bad - Alexander did alright the first night and Hunter was fine the next night. For breakfast our waitress ended up giving a few recommendations when asked, which was helpful. The frustration is that having a captive audience doesn't excuse the Inn from providing excellent food. We paid $80+ each night - which is no big deal if the food is great - but we just paid $30 today for a meal at the Village Inn in Provo and it was absolutely delicious with a fantastic wait staff (thanks, Dylan!). Vegetarian dishes should have more than potatoes. Vegetables shouldn't be too hard to eat. French toast shouldn't be burnt. Only offer scrambled eggs if you can't cook the eggs to order. Hopefully the Inn will take reviews to heart and improve accordingly.

Yelp
We had lunch here. Again Zanterra has failed to provide decent food for those trying to see Yellowstone. The burger was a hockey puck and the thin tiny slice of bison pastrami was so dry didn't even know you could get it that dry. The service was very good. We had an attentive server and this location is very pretty. The lodge is unique and beautiful. However, the food once again is disgusting. The salad tastes like they are putting some kind of chemical on it. Maybe to make it last longer? I don't know but it had a funky taste. Such a shame. The National Park Service needs to do better and get rid of this company.

Yelp
Service was great and the atmosphere was lovely in a historic hotel dining room. However, foods still come fist for a restaurant. Given our experience from the night before at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel Dining Room (review posted separately), we avoided any cocktails. My husband ordered trout again and it was better than he had at Lake Yellowstone. He could tell he was eating trout. I had fried chicken and it was at the other end of the spectrum in terms of seasoning compared to my coq au vin the previous night at Lake Yellowstone. The chicken was extremely salty. I could not taste the gravy and grits because the saltiness of the chicken pieces numbed my taste buds. I managed to finish of the chicken and I had to stop.

Yelp
Do NOT waste your money eating here! Breakfast was awful! I'd compare the hikers special to airplane food! Very disappointing!

Yelp
Great service and historic ambiance in the old faithful inn. We had the prime rib sandwich and loved it! Enjoyed the fried cheese curds as well. Portion sizes were big and staff were very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Well, I hate to say that many Yelpers are correct about the dining experience here. No problem with the reservation and prompt water service, it's just everything else. Our poor waiter came over and told us he was slammed and we would need to wait. That wasn't too bad. When he came, he took our order and came back to say the prime rib would take 20 minutes and told my friend she could help herself to the buffet due to the wait. In addition to the prime rib, there were two orders of the roasted chicken and one buffet. All the chicken was dry and the buffet was not good. I had the roasted tomato soup with Gouda which was okay. It had flavor and was warm. Two salads: spinach with mushrooms, grape tomatoes and shredded carrots and a spring mix with grapes and feta cheese. Downhill after that. The boneless skinless chicken was hard as a rock, the short ribs were dry and the salmon was okay but lacking flavor. The red mashed potatoes were gummy and the green bean almondine was tough. Didn't dare try the carrots or baked beans. For dessert our waiter gave us both desserts which were the chocolate croissant bread pudding and apple crisp. All meh. I would have been better off with ice cream because this is the one item that you can get consistently in the park that is good. Thank you to our bus boy for bringing the horseradish sauce we asked the waiter for. For as iconic a hotel as this is, the food is really not well executed IMO. Perhaps the pasta or beef is better but I don't need to go again. Maybe just a drink.

Yelp
Expensive buffet with limited choices! The salad was good, but everything else was dry or tasteless. We had dinner and breakfast there. The breakfast was even worse. The eggs were poured not cracked. The biscuit was dry with mono redeeming merit. The coffee throughout Yellowstone was some of the worst I have experienced. They have a captured audience, so charge a lot for less than mediocre food. Bring your own food, and a small microwave, as cooking is not allowed in the rooms. Yellowstone is spectacular if you love hours of driving and road work (waiting up to an hour) everywhere!

Jack I.

Yelp
Avoid at all costs if you are ordering off the menu! 75 minutes till we got food while being told by a super nice waitress it was on its way, multiple times. If you are just coming for a below average buffet, it's probably a little bit better. You end up just wasting a lot of time for not a great experience and sub par food.

Melissa A.

Yelp
The service was so so. We got the outrageously priced buffet $48 per person. The brisket was excellent! The walleye was a fish stick. Salad was ok. Soup was ok. Everything was room temperature except the chilli and soup. The ambiance ... there was none! Eating in a cafeteria is the ambiance with kids running everywhere.

Karina P.

Yelp
Run away from this horrific restaurant!‍ The waiter was okay, but it had the worst food I've ever had. I got the potato gnocchi which seemed good when described on the menu. I was wrong. It was absolutely disgusting! There was less gnocchi than zucchini and there was WAY too much pesto sauce. My tongue was numb from the pesto sauce. The ambiance was fine but the tables are very small. Also, the buffet was so overpriced it was $48! The buffet was yet again disappointing. It was like the cafeteria food served at elementary schools or summer camps. Overall this restaurant sucked, and I recommend finding somewhere else if you don't want to have a miserable meal.

Jeanine L.

Yelp
We had breakfast here and it was terrible! We thought we had to experience the dining room while we were here and are disappointed we did so. We should have just taken pictures like we did the lobby and then moved on. The food was mediocre, and we have people in our party do the buffet as well as order off the menu and it was all just OK. The staff was terrible and the tables were so close together that the staff and guests were constantly bumping into one another. While we didn't expect fine dining we did expect a little more than what we got. We wouldn't do it again. We'd grab something at one of the quick service places in the old faithful area or just a coffee for the 2nd floor coffee bar (not only is the coffee great but Sutton on the outside balance and drinking it was amazing!) and the a granola bar we brought with us!

Yelp
Oh boy , this place might just be the justification for allowing yelp reviewers to rank a place at ZERO stars Go and read what @alison M wrote o her review , we had a somewhat similar experience - the food is tasteless at best , plain disgusting in reality . It looks like they employ the worst chefs(?) in the country. Dare and try the salmon and tell me if you feel any taste except 'mushy' - 40$ per person for that quality ? Is this the Bay Area ? Small variety , mediocre options - terrible horrible Buffett mechanics - huge lines , folks are standing for a long time waiting for a refill (that takes forever ) on a buffet dish - the waiter was 3/5 - was trying his best but needed to be called multiple times for getting a refill Start away of this place !!! Go and get a burger at the deli in the snow lodge - it's the only descent thing to eat around this area :(

Yelp
No. Just no. And then no one more time to make sure you get the point. Run away screaming, if you can. But you probably can't because, if you are here, you're stuck. This is a food desert where you come and everything is closed by 7pm, the snack deli closed at 11:30am (yes, that's right) and there are only 3-4 options total anyway for the like 500+ people who stay here and, bc they know you have nowhere to go if you're here at 8pm as a guest, they don't care about the quality or selection. So we dined here twice in our 17 hours or so on the property while staying for one night. Once was the dinner buffet for $39.99 per person (no drink included) and it was not good. I will say, the salmon tasted OK, but the salad bar was some lettuce, a few cherry tomatoes and sliced carrots and cucumbers and bagged croutons. No cheese, oh, and I forgot to mention everything above was empty or had like three items on the very bottom...included dessert was one selection - a apple crisp-type thing that wasn't very fresh. For breakfast - again a buffet for $15.99 per person no drink included. Supposed to have French toast, yogurt, granola, etc. etc. I walk up - no cereal at all, no milk, no yogurt, no clean plates or bowls. I ask for cereal and wait 15 minutes while my coffee is getting cold at the table for them to slowly refill all of them - then, no bowls, so I wait again. Then, no milk. Staff were running around ignoring the huge line of people waiting for plates to be brought out while one lone gal working behind the food counter was trying to do everything. She did her best. I imagine they, like everyone else, have staff shortages. The issue wasn't the waiters and waitresses, who were nice enough, it was the quality of the food, the amount of selection, and the price. I don't like being taken advantage of and I feel this happened here. If you can, pack sandwiches and feed yourself. I wouldn't recommend this dining room at all.

Yelp
It is incredible that they require reservations for this terrible restaurant. I understand that it's difficult to get food here in a somewhat remote location but I think the food was fine until old faithful inn dining room cooks got a hold of it. Below is one picture of the gnocchi that serves as an example of how terrible food is at this restaurant there were only about eight gnocchi in this dish. We were able to identify peas, squash and pearl onions, and the green sauce is supposedly kale. If it was not at all possible, it tasted worse than it looked. The charcuterie tray should actually be renamed to Oscar Mayer, cold cut tray. the bread was dried out, and the sauces were dried out on top. The service was okay but not great. Forgot 2 items and our cocktails came after the food was served. :( If you feel you have to eat here, I suggest that you order the chicken, which was the only one of the four entrées that was decent. But honestly, you were better off going over to the grill at the snow Lodge. If you need some vegetables, I would suggest you stop in West Yellowstone and pick up a few to keep in a cooler or get the package salad at one of the grills/cafeterias. it was actually the freshest salad we had while in

Yelp
If I could I would give them zero stars. Very bad service. The host brought us to an isolate corner table, where no one can't see us. I had requested to change the table, he looked at me, and told me no more table available. Maybe I Asian. But I saw a plenty of tables available. The look on he his face seems like you sit or you leave this place. Then I went outside, then another lady came, she is the same thing. I have to rise my tone a little higher, finally she gave me a better table. The service is extremely poor for an historical hotel dining I was there for lunch. The food was no good at all. You must expected the food is excellent for that kind of hotel restaurant, it turns out awful food.
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
If you are staying at the Inn you really don't have many choices. I believe you really need a reservation for the dining room. Plan ahead. This restaurant is large and loud. Decor is rustic, which is nice but it is Disney-like as are other restaurants in the parks. Just chaotic, not at all relaxing or even enjoyable. Food is fine, not great. I had the Cesar salad and it had enough dressing on it for three salads. Prime rib was fine but felt disguised by all the brown gravy. Potatoes were crunchy, not good. Service was inconsistent, staffing shortages are an issue.

Yelp
Really terrible dining experience. We were excited to sneak in a last-minute dinner reservation in a really great location at the park. Unfortunately when we showed up it turned out to be buffet only. The buffet itself was very limited in its offerings. There were no signs on any of the dishes so you just had to guess what you were eating. The salmon was the only edible item. They had a chicken hockey puck available. The worst thing was the bison short rib. For all the preaching they do about respecting the local wildlife, the biggest crime against a bison was what they did to them after slaughter. It was dry as a desert with no sauce. Could barely cut through the thing, which, for a short rib is really tough to do. Then they brought the check - $47 per person for this (barely) glorified Golden Corral. Avoid. Eat at the cafeteria next door instead.

Yelp
We ate here for breakfast every day since we stayed at the Inn. The service is some of the strangest service we have ever received. The hosts do not get in a hurry and have zero people skills at all. There is no sense of urgency when it comes to seating people and they will just stand there in their own world having conversations with each other and then have someone else finally bring you to your table. The service is strange. There is a server assistant that will fill your water but they will not bring you any other type of drink. The main server does that. One day we had a server assistant and a server argue over whose section we were in and after that it took forever for a server to come take our drink order. The food was...mediocre at best. The French toast was good. The gravy was terrible. One day the biscuits were cold...like refrigerated cold. Not even room temperature. The bacon was good. The eggs were wet. I guess they are powdered? Also, we had to ask for a drink refill every time. They never just brought them when our drinks were low or empty. The atmosphere is excellent. No complaints there. But everything else really needs work, especially given the premium price tag.

Dan S.

Yelp
DO. NOT. EAT. HERE. If I could give this place a NEGATIVE rating I would. I should have believed the reviews others left.....but I didn't...and here we are. For starters...our staff and all staff we interacted with were doing an OUTSTANDING job and trying to do the best they could with what they had.... But...thats where it ended. Look at my pictures. The root cause of frustration....if you take reservations...you should be prepared to have enough food for everyone!!! The "food" they did have, was absolutely disgusting. Chicken was boiled with some type of sauce thrown on 忙 No short rib....substituted Hot Dogs No fresh vegetables...substituted frozen broccoli No croissant bread pudding No Gluten Free No Bread No Vanilla Cream Sauce No baked beans ... Substituted some concoction You get the drift.... the pic attached with everything crossed off tells you the story.

Yelp
DO NOT get the buffet. At $40, it is highway robbery. I did not have the a la carte menu but I can't imagine the food is much better. Bread option- hawaiian rolls Salad - plain lettuce or spinach with basically nothing on it Entrees - dry chicken, dry salmon, or beef short ribs (semi-edible) veggies -- partially cooked carrots and string beans Mashed potatoes -- ok Save yourself the money. I would do your best to plan other food options if at all possible. Pack food to eat ahead of time. Or go to the bear paw deli before it closes.

Yelp
Great lunch buffet ($20 per person) and every item was good. Much better deal than some of the some restaurants around. Would for sure go back but pretty long wait unless you go when they open.
google avatar

Irwin N.

Yelp
The short rib was extremely short. The buffet is worth it. You can also just tell them to charge it to your room even if you aren't staying at the Inn and you get a free meal.

Yelp
The Old Faithful Inn Dining room is a beautiful dining hall in the Old Faithful Inn. One could step in the huge voluminous dining room and imagine themselves back in the 1930's and 40's and being served delicious meals after enjoying all the wonders that Yellowstone National Park has to offer. But today, one's imagination would be shattered once they started eating the bland, room temperature "food" they serve in this gorgeous setting. If you like good food, don't go here! As I have said in my review of the Old Faithful Inn, the company that is currently running the Yellowstone Hotels and Restaurants, "Xanterra" in my opinion is failing miserably at delivering excellent customer service. They do NOTHING to provide their customers a positive experience, zero WOW moments, no "I can't wait to come back here!" thoughts. Our first nights stay we had dinner reservations at 5pm, we went directly to the buffet as suggested by our server because the line was short, she said the line sometimes gets as long as the exit which is approximately 100 feet long! There was a fairly wide variety of things to eat, salad, rolls, beef short ribs, huckleberry bbq chicken, wild rice, string beans and mashed potatoes, I took a sample of everything. Nothing stood out as being delicious, nothing stood out has having much of any flavor at all. I remember thinking to myself, "This is what prison food must taste like". Two days later we got a bit of a late start, so we decided to try the breakfast, they open at 6:30am and we came in around 8:30ish although there were many empty tables we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. We immediately headed for the buffet and I was pleasantly surprised! The food was all pretty good! The oatmeal was hot! The eggs weren't watery, biscuits and gravy were delicious, and the bacon and sausage were both hot and delicious! (This is the reason for the third star.) Our last day at the Inn we decided to have breakfast again, this time we got there at 6:45am, again we went straight to the buffet, and waited in line for about 10 minutes to get to the food. This experience was a complete 180 degree turn from the previous day. With the exception of the oatmeal and biscuits and gravy, everything was room temperature! The eggs were watery, and the sausage was completely different from the previous day, instead of being hot and delicious, it was cold and shriveled up! My impression of Xanterra is that they are doing the absolute bare minimum for their customers because they know that most of them won't be returning, and the customers that do come back know better than to stay in one of their facilities. But they have a never ending stream of first time guests they can bilk out of their money. Needless to say we won't be returning, unless the Park Service changes their "hospitality" contract.

Shanna S.

Yelp
We had two groups and weren't allowed to be seated together even though there were empty tables all around us. We are having a family reunion and it's a little disheartening that we aren't able to all sit near each other to break bread together. I don't plan to return to eat here ever again.

Yelp
The customer service was good by our waitress. The checkin process not so much. Show up at your reservation time, if you are 4 or 10 Minutes early they will ask you to come back. That happened to us and the person behind us. The menu is always the same for dinner. You would have thought they would get the food right serving the same thing over and over. Well they did not. It is meh. Plus it is nearly $200 for 3 adults and a teen. If you have another option go there. The ambience is nice.

It has been a year and service and food was excellent but this year this place went for four stat to minus stars. The place was not busy. We were the first party of 7 to arrive with 9 more coming. We were seated and the rest of the party was to be seated either next to or at joining tables. That didn't happen! Failure one. Failure two; the food quality was terrible. The removed the bison burger and replaced it with some terrible chicken burger. The buffet was also outstanding year ago. This year the bison brats were overcooked, the bison chili tasted like it had been watered down with tomato sauce. When the rest of the party arrive (you can't predict what the buffalo are doing when strolling about) they seated them across the room front us in an empty dinning room not with us. They too told us that is what's available--bull picky. Two empty tables right next to us. We were paying the bill for all st about $25 a head (about $400). Happy with old faithful inn-- absolutely NOT! Going back, NO!! Should you try it, highly do not recommend. There are other options for food.

Yelp
Service was excellent and the ambiance was terrific in the historic lodge. That said, the dining room loses some points in having really long lines to actually get food for what is a very expensive buffet. At times, food was picked over. Desserts were excellent!

Yelp
As others have mentioned, that was really bad. Slow moving Golden Corral buffet at $40 a plate plus quite possibly the worst old fashioned I have ever had ($16 charged for the one sip I took, and it most definitely remained on the bill). I guess it worked out, since if it was mediocre I might not have cancelled our reservation for tomorrow night in a different part of the park. This way I at least avoid another night of frustration. The decor is absolutely beautiful (though the dining room was kept far too warm). But just enjoy the lobby, as the atmosphere there is just as wonderful to enjoy.

Yelp
I believe this restaurant is only available to hotel guests at the moment, but this may have changed. We made a reservation for 9:30pm, but we're able to to be seated earlier as they close at 10pm. A very cool dining room and an unlimited buffet for $40. They do also have a wine list which you can purchase separately. The food was really good and they had a lot of options. They had a cheese dip as an appetizer along with soup and salad. They then had carrots, green beans, mashed potatoes and rice pilaf. The rice pilaf was spicy and it was so good. Then they had chicken, salmon and prime rib. It was all so good and was a very convenient option for staying in the hotel.

Yelp
The one star is for the location, literally right next to Old Faithful. The rooms were eclectic and old school, even had a brass key for the rooms. However the food was always cold and too salty. And we did gwt there when they opened each day. The coffee was good though. Not much variety. Still don't get why we needed to be seated at a buffet? We even tried the deli in the main lobby and the food there gave us indigestion. We were there for 2 days and housekeeping never cleaned the room. Which is probably why we had a MOUSE in the room. GROSS.

Yelp
Ick. This could've been a lot better. This is a pretty pitiful place to eat around here. They seem like they don't care if you don't like the food. What are you going to do, forage in the woods? The food here was lackluster at best. Several steps below mediocre. We came here for breakfast. Big lines awaited us, since we didn't have a reservation. Once we finally got into the dining room, we saw that it's an all you can eat buffet situation. The scrambled eggs appear to have been made from a dehydrated mix. The coffee was some of the weakest coffee I've had in my life. Everything was completely bland. The prices were astronomical, considering the lack of quality of food. All of this stuff seems like Aramark just warmed over some institutional french toast and stuck it out there for $$$. The service was friendly. The dude joked with us while keeping the coffee fresh. He did come around regularly and did a great job of keeping the service up. The dining room itself is nice- it's all log cabin style like the rest of the Old Faithful Inn, looks ancient and rustic. This ain't fine dining, but the prices are. I don't know why anyone would go out of their way to eat here. I only came because I ran out of other dining options in the middle of the woods.

Yelp
OMG - this was the worst "dining" experience in my 70+ years on this planet. If you have recently ingested this buffet, I commiserate with you. If you have future reservations, do yourself a favor and cancel them. Instead, take a walk across the rear parking lot and dine a la carte at the Snow Lodge Obsidian Dining Room. They don't take reservations, but it's a small price to pay to avoid the garbage dished out at the Old Faithful Inn "buffet." Where to begin - so many comments, so little time. This place clearly has a "you're a captive audience; we know you'll probably never be back so we'll take every advantage of you we can" attitude. We were seated for our 5:30 pm reservation. The wait staff were simply disinterested. That faraway look in their eyes told me they would rather be anywhere but here. We had to request 3 different forks from the busboy because the ones he kept bringing us were dirty. Our waitress immediately requested our drink order (naturally drinks are not included in the $40 buffet price) and asked if she could bring our soup. Apparently she assumed that we knew how this buffet meal worked and did not offer any explanation - let's not waste any time with small talk. My wife ordered a Huckleberry Spritz which was so watered down she could not taste any alcohol. The buffet line was long and slow and items kept running out. The salad was a bunch of mixed greens ala Costco. Mixed greens and croutons - there were NO tomatoes, celery, onions, cucumbers, etc. etc. As others have noted, the dressings were all in unmarked bowls. AND, I found out to my great, gasping surprise, they placed the creamy horseradish in an unmarked bowl, right in there with all the unmarked salad dressings. The salmon, chicken breast, and short ribs were all absolutely tasteless - as if they had been boiled. For dessert (served by our waitress) we selected the apple "crisp." It was a disgusting glop of boiled apples with some soggy flakes of oatmeal thrown on top. In sum, I have had better food at a third-rate or school cafeteria. I cancelled our second night reservations and we had a wonderful meal at the Obsidian Dining Room instead. This is an embarrassment to the historic Old Faithful Inn, the National Park Service, and the U.S. taxypayer. There are so many similar, bad reviews that Xanterra MUST know what's going on. It wouldn't take much to actually provide some decent food at no added expense, but obviously Xanterra just doesn't give a hoot. This is what a bad monopoly looks like. Congress needs to shake things up here with some strong oversight. But, until they do - avoid this buffet (and accommodations at the Old Faithful Inn) like the plague. This historic inn deserves FAR, FAR better than this.

Yelp
We went here for lunch today. We all had the buffet. It was good. Mac and cheese was the best thing

Yelp
We ate at the dining room for dinner and breakfast buffet. Dinner was okay but not worth the 39.99 the food was lukewarm. The server for dinner was very nice. The breakfast server name was Clayton and he lied about not having straws and his serving ability was lacking. The food was okay, but nothing to write home about.

Yelp
While the accommodations and experience of walking through this storied hotel and sipping coffee while watching Old Faithful were charming, the restaurant was an ABOMINATION. We were seated for our 9:15pm reservation with our friends who sat in a table next to us at the same time. We ordered drinks but our server didn't take our food orders. It wasn't until 9:45pm that we got our waitresses attention to let her know that we still needed to order food. At this point our friends at the table next to us were halfway through eating dinner. By 10:15pm the food never showed up. Our waitress and many of the servers start setting up tables for breakfast the next day. With exhaustion, we canceled our food order as they had clearly forgotten it, which they admitted to. We asked to speak to the manager and explained the situation. I really wished I had asked for her name since she had an unapologetic and condescending disposition. Never once did she apologize for the service we received and asked us how they could make it right. We did not want to be charged for the food that never came and felt like the drinks should be on the house since we wasted our time. At this point, we didn't have dinner and there was nowhere else to eat. While they didn't charge us for the food but asked us to pay for the drinks. After continuous back-and-forth arguing, the manager told us we should've eaten the food which she would've given us for free to which I answered that we were never offered this option. I got out my card to pay for the drinks since it was clear this was going nowhere. The manager stomped off. When I thought this horrific ordeal was over, the manager comes back with a tray of food and starts passive-aggressively throwing each plate of food at us and barks at us about "if we need boxes". At this point, we go over to our friend's table next to us (who had a completely different experience than ours), say goodnight and left. I really wish I had asked for her name. She was the manager on duty the evening of Wednesday, August 9th, 2023. It's a shame as this is truly a beautiful establishment. It would be well worth the time for the staff to improve its management and treatment of customers.

Yelp
Came here for dinner because of the location (we stayed at the lodge) and definitely left disappointed. It's buffet only, I'm assuming because there's not enough servers? The line is so slow moving, especially since it's reservation only. The food was definitely lacking in flavor. Everything we ate was pretty bad. My salad had lettuce stumps, the chicken was rubbery- couldn't even cut into in. Vegetables were all steamed and had no flavor. Dessert was apple crisp but looked like soup. Completely watery and overly sweet. Not worth $40 a person. The server didn't even bring water until 15 mins after we started eating. Said she didn't realize we were there

Yelp
We were able to eat the buffet for lunch, it was a great price, especially compared to everything we tried on the trip. Mom loved the salmon. The selection was a little difficult for my 5 year old, it definitely catered to an older audience. Our server, Chip, was amazing. He was so attentive and accommodating. We were one of the last families in the dining room and they ran out of the normal brownie dessert, so the chef made us a special dessert that was probably one of the most delicious restaurant desserts we've ever had. It was one of our favorite meals on the trip.

Yelp
Bad buffet. Bad menu items. Long wait. Reservations hard to come by. Overpriced. Classic captive audience problem. Xanterra making money hand over fist. Shame on Xanterra for making money hand over fist at a National Park. Bad stewardship of a tremendous legacy.

Yelp
This was the worst dining experience I have ever had. For $40 a person you would expect a good meal. It was terrible! The dining room itself is beautiful, but the food is awful! Do not spend your money and go to this restaurant. The lodge is fabulous, dining room is terrible !

Lily K.

Yelp
The dinner in the dining room was extremely disappointing. The Inn is a very cool lodging experience and having an afternoon drink on the terrace was great. We had dinner reservations in the dining room and thought we were getting a quality meal. The buffet is your only option for a meal and is $50 per person. I would not pay $10 for what we got. All of the employees seemed to be fed up with everyone and everything. There was one buffet and the line was very slow. You would think they would have working a buffet figured out, but food was constantly running out, there were no plates, and honestly I'm not sure what the servers were actually doing. Costco has better food than what was provided. It is a disgrace to the historic Inn.

Yelp
Went through a few hurdles to secure a coveted reservation. Wish I would have read the reviews beforehand. Unfortunately I attended on buffet night which included mass produced unseasoned frozen chicken hockey pucks but failed to include the necessary amount of bowls, plates, and silverware. The line was delayed both times I went through for lack of dishes and then salad dressing. All of this would be negligible except for the fact that this place is either understaffed or poorly staffed by incompetent minions. After interacting with our server fifteen minutes after initial seating and then never again until I went and got him, it's horrific service on top of average to pathetic food that rates this one star.

Yelp
Service was great but the food was cold on the buffet line. We were in line for 30 minutes for the buffet. 2/10 don't recommend.

Yelp
The building is worth seeing. Please save your money and eat elsewhere. . Ate the buffet for supper. They had chicken an beef. Sounds good, right?Wrong! Chicken was terrible and the beef was bland. Best thing was the beans. Tried breakfast this morning no better. Cannot recommend either.

Katie C.

Yelp
2/10, mediocre at best. Would not recommend and would never go back. $40 buffet that should be about $15/per person at the most. Cold food, uncooked vegetables, dry bread, bones in the fish... Plus the line for the buffet can be 45min plus to get this awful meal. Huckleberry margarita is their "best drink" and tasted like straight margarita mix, even filling half my glass with water and it was still undrinkable. The beef stew was broth with one spoonful of beef and veggies. The chocolate bread pudding tasted like undercooked chocolate chip pancake. I have never had a worse meal for so much money. God awful. Do not waste the calories!!! I would give it zero stars, but that's not an option...

Yelp
Do not go here we went at 1 pm and they had a buffet and no sandwich's (we were told to go to another restaurant in the complex) I should have ask if they had anything else besides buffet (on the board it looked like it was of good size). Not so. And not worth the $46 for. While we were eating we saw one of our severs bring out salads to another table and we asked our server how did they get a salad she said you should have ask if there were any other options. My question is why didn't the hostess tell us. I'll never go there again

Yelp
Only reason for 2 stars is the Ambiance, they had live music (of sorts) in the lobby. The dining room was very grand, huge fireplace and painting of Old Faithful but the service and food was bad. As to be expected it was expensive and we had reservations but still had to wait to get it even though it was 1/4 full at most. I'm guessing they didn't have many servers. Like others have said the hosts are more busy talking to each other than customers and absolutely no sense of urgency. The server had one speed, slow and kept forgetting things. The food had no flavor and my steak was warm as best, they did offer to get a new one but I didn't want to wait another 30 mins, so choked it down. Would've been nice to get refills of my soda to make it easier to wash it down but that didn't happen. When possible I suggest you leave the park and go to West Yellowstone or Gardiner for dinner, they have many good options and while not cheap seems like it in comparison.

Yelp
Good food, excellent service, excellent ambiance. The server was attentive and the buffet line food met expectations.
