On the Grid : Old and Famous Jalebiwala

"The jalebis (deep-fried and sugar-soaked sweet) at the Old and Famous Jalebiwala are indeed famous, but the aloo (potato) or mattar (peas) stuffed samosas truly steal the cake (er, jalebis?). It's worth waiting for fresh batches of both, most especially on a crisp winter morning. Treat yourself further by walking a few metres into Dariba Kalan, the traditional jewelry market-street of Old Delhi, and turning onto Gali Khajanchi to get a peek at the stunning Haveli Khajanchi (Treasurer's House)." - Delhi Dallying

The story of Old Famous Jalebi Wala began in 1884 when the Late Shri Lala Nem Chand Jain opened the shop in Chandni Chowk. Originally from Agra’s Hari Ki Garhi village, Lala Nem Chand moved to Delhi with just INR 2, which he received as a dowry gift during his marriage. With this small sum, he started his journey as a sweet maker. Lala Nem Chand experimented with several recipes before perfecting his signature jalebi recipe, which quickly gained popularity. His secret recipe has been passed down through four generations and remains the same to this day. Old Famous Jalebi Wala has served many famous people, from Bollywood stars to political leaders. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee loved their jalebis and even invited them to serve at his home. Other leaders like Pandit Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi, and H.D. Deve Gowda also enjoyed their sweets. A single Jalebi costs Rs. 60 while a kg costs Rs.600 Their USP lies in their style of preparation technique and ingredients. Unlike regular jalebis, made using refined sugar, this shop uses desi khandsari sugar to make its syrup. Khandsari is an unrefined sugar made from sugarcane juice, which not only adds a rich taste but also gives the jalebis a distinctive flavour that sets them apart. The second USP of this iconic eatery is that the jalebis here are fried in pure desi ghee, which makes them extra crispy and gives them a rich, aromatic flavour.

This corner shop is in a very congested and crowded area of Chandni Chowk. Because of the crowd, it is difficult to stand in line to buy items, especially during busy hours. It is also hard to eat comfortably right there, as people are constantly pushing through. To add to the problems, the area is often littered with disposable plates and cups, and the garbage cans are overflowing. While the Jalebis taste good, the Samosas are only average. The quantity provided does not justify the cost. Furthermore, the staff rudely declined when tissue papers were requested. Since a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the food is completely missing, it is probably better to take the food away and eat it elsewhere. It seems many people overlook all these issues just to have a taste from this very old and famous outlet.

Honestly, this place was a disappointment. We ended up waiting almost an hour just to get a plate of jalebis, and for what? Overpriced, overhyped, and painfully slow service. Chandni Chowk has a lot of iconic food spots, but this one? Feels like it’s surviving purely on old reputation. If you value your time (and your money), you’re better off grabbing jalebis from literally any other corner shop, they’ll serve you faster and without acting like they’re doing you a favour. Wouldn’t recommend. Not going again. Ps : don't ask for their samosa, you'll regret

I absolutely loved this place. It is located in Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, tucked into a small corner shop, but it serves some of the best rabdi jalebi you will find anywhere. The taste is exceptional, rich, and truly mouthwatering. If you are in Delhi, this is a spot you simply should not miss.

Finally tried the famous Jalebi with Rabri from Jalebi Wala — honestly, it didn’t live up to the hype for me. I was expecting something exceptional, but it felt pretty average. I’ve had better jalebis at other places, so this one just seemed like another overhyped spot. Not bad, but definitely not worth the buzz in my opinion.

I really dont know why it is famous. Or may be it was not my day. Reached thr in morning around 8:30am and jalebi they gave to me was cold. I cudnt understand the taste of jalebi aswell. Rabri was also OK Ok.. And paid Rs100 for what u can see in the picture.. for that experience, i wud not recommend anyone to waste Rs100.

Jalebi and Rabdi at one of the oldest sweet street food places. The shop has been around for over 140 years and is still going strong, now managed by the fourth generation. Their jalebis are rich, generously sized, and made in desi ghee, priced at ₹600 per kg. The rabdi, also ₹600 per kg, pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the jalebi. It’s a classic combo that hits the spot. It’s a basic place, always busy, but the taste is amazing. A great spot for a classic Delhi sweet.
