Stayed here for one week and explored both sides of the Big Island. Room was clean and very comfortable, and the hosts Lori and Stewart are friendly and welcoming. Breakfasts on the lanai included fresh and very local fruits, many of which were grown right there in the back yard, along with fresh baked goods, eggs, smoothies and coffee. Neighborhood street is very quiet, and the house is within walking distance to Boiling Pots State Park. Great jumping off point to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and convenient to the Saddle Road for a 60 mph connection to the Kona side of the island. Would definitely stay here again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Old Hawaiian B&B. The rooms are well appointed, comfy and clean. The property is beautiful and grounds are nice to explore. The breakfast on the lanai is the highlight of staying here. We enjoyed meeting our fellow guests and sharing ideas for what to do in the Hilo area. The breakfast was delicious and filling: fresh fruit from the property, homemade scones and banana bread, fresh squeezed orange juice, hard boiled egg and yogurt. The host was friendly and welcoming. We will stay here again if we are back on the Big Island.

The accommodations were lovely, comfortable and clean but the best selling point about Old Hawaiian are the breakfasts!! Served communally (but a small group--there are only 3 rooms at this B&B), the hostess/owner prepares simple but uber-healthy and beautifully presented foods. Every day there is a choice of two breads (monkey bread for the win!) served alongside a hard-boiled egg, yogurt and THE MOST AMAZING fruits you have ever eaten (most from her own backyard trees). She explains how to eat the more mysterious ones (suck off the cotton-candy like fibers of one, eat the rind of another). ||Lovely backyard that drops off to a cliff overlooking a river. Great location with ease of access to all things on the Eastern side of the Big Island. The room was spacious with both a bed and a bed-settee as well as comfortable chairs. Updated bathroom with a great shower.

This was our first time at a Bed snd Breakfast, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, was a great experience and a truly nice place. I sensed a real Hawaiian feel to it. My thanks to Laurie the owner and her assistant who served the breakfast (sorry that I didn't get the young lady's name). Highly recommended!

We completely enjoyed our stay at the Old Hawaiian B and B! The hosts were wonderful, the rooms were cozy, the grounds were amazing and the breakfast for delicious! We were so pleased with everything. If we return to Hilo, we will hope this is available! So happy that the hosts opened their lovely place up to visitors…it allowed us to experience another incredible aspect of the island! Thank you!

Very nice B&B in a good neighborhood. Hosts were very friendly and accommodating. Room was spacious, well-appoined. We loved being able to have the windows open to hear the birds at night. Slept wonderfully. Breakfast was excellent. The entire experience left us with a good feeling for Hilo, without the big-hotel, touristy gitz.

Google
Great place to stay in Hilo. Reasonable price & good location. The service was perfect. The room is big & the bed was very comfortable. There is no AC in the room, but we did not feel it was necessary.|The breakfast includes local fruits & homemade bread with coffee. It was suitable for my wife, but I personally prefer vegetables in the breakfast. It was not a problem preparing it by myself after purchasing the necessary vegetables in a local supermarket.|This B&B is highly recommended for a couple with limited budget looking for a comfortable & quite location.

We enjoyed our stay at the Old Hawaiian B&B. Lory and Stewart were excellent hosts. The breakfasts they made for us were full of delicious local fruits and baked goods. Their backyard was beautiful and the Lanai was a nice place to take it all in. Wonderful experience overall. We would return for sure!

Yelp
This was our 2nd stay at this B&B and we just love the peaceful serene setting of sitting on the lanai looking out over their expansive garden that stretches back to the Wailuku river. Many fruit trees which they serve up the fresh fruit for our continental breakfast and chatting with guests from the other rooms many times from different countries. If you like the feeling of peace and quiet this is the place to relax! Missed Lori but thank you Stuart!

Yelp
If you're like us, like to be away from hub- stay in simple but friendly lodging THIS IS YOUR PLACE!! Incredible breakfasts, beautiful grounds Adequate accommodations- don't expect deluxe at these prices!! Hilo is an awesome place and thanks Lory for helping make it even MORE memorable

Yelp
We were staying at Hilo for just 2 nights and Old Hawaiian B&B was perfect! It is located in a very quiet neighborhood and about 3 miles away from downtown Hilo. The only thing I would fault really is the narrow dark driveway when you come back from dinner at night, so just drive very slowly and carefully. They have 3 parking spots for each of the 3 rooms.  Hubby and I stayed in a room with large windows with a big view of the backyard.  The only trash can was a small one in the bathroom but otherwise it was  great.  The bed was comfortable, and there were extra pillows and blankets if needed.  Our bathroom had plenty of towels and we also had a table with 2 chairs and a small futon as well. Each morning Lory would bake her delicious banana bread and a pasty like cinnamon roll along with fresh cut up fruits, smoothie, coffee, yogurt and hard boiled egg. We also got to hang out with Sam (Shiz-poo puppy), Daisy (Lab-doodle) and Spike the kitty in the morning.  Thank you Lory & Stewart for a wonderful stay.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. We visited Big Island, HI in the month of May 2019. This was the best place we stayed at during our entire trip. Stewart and Lory are super hosts. The B&B is situated in a very quiet neighborhood. We stayed at the Hawaiian Room - dozing off to the sound of rain and waking up to a bright sunny morning was the best feeling ever. The room was super neat, comfortable. The "Fruit Basket", smoothie and breakfast prepared by Lory was amazing. Most of the delicious fruits are from her garden. There were other guests too who joined us at the table. It was interesting to meet people from Europe and hear about their journey. I cannot imagine a place better than this to stay in Hilo. It is also close to couple of waterfalls. Highly recommend. We did not get to see the pet doggo though :(

Yelp
WOW. The best host I've ever had at any place I've stayed. My boyfriend and I felt so welcomed throughout the entire week we stayed here. Lory has been the absolute sweetest, accommodating to all of our requests. She provides so much, I'm truly so grateful I got to stay here. It has made this trip so worth it. Plus the backyard is incredible, so much to explore. Thank you so much Lory. Could not recommend more :)

Yelp
I really want to give this B&B five stars. But I can't. As much as I love this place, there are things about it which make it not an ideal place to stay for the night or longer. Because Old Hawaiian B&B is in a residential neighborhood, the owner, Lory, is very concerned about patrons being really quiet. I am not a loud person, and I'm certainly not a raucous one either. So this was disconcerting. I understand her concern, but this is a business she is running where people are paying money to spend time here. She was a bit too nervous about it. When we first arrived, she ran out of the house to greet us, but not in time to prevent my boyfriend from activating the car alarm, which unfortunately is one that makes a loud beep. That was what she was hoping to muffle before we shut our car doors. She was all flustered and speaking in a hushed voice attempting to convince us of the virtues of silence. She's preaching to the choir. And there is a limit. Sorry. We were the only two guests there that night. Next: Our semi-private bathroom. I say "semi-private," because it's virtually open to our bedroom. It's basically a partitioned off space. The door is one of those folding screens most commonly used as closet doors. It made for no privacy of sound between the bathroom and the bedroom. Since my boyfriend and I know each other well, that's perhaps not a problem. But many people do like their privacy in such matters. We're both with them. We both loved the fact that the shower is solar-powered. Unfortunately, the day before had been cloudy and continued to be the next morning when we awoke and intended to take showers after our long flight from the Mainland. The night before, Lory did mention that if the shower is cold, she will turn on the backup heat. Unfortunately, she wasn't around the morning we were there. I attempted to get someone's attention in the main part of the house, but no one came to our rescue. So frigid showers is what we had. The room itself has sheer curtains and looks out onto the patio. I'm glad we were the only guests, because there wasn't any privacy in that respect either. A more serious concern than that of the bathroom. Lory and her brother-in-law, Kevin, took care of us. We got the impression that Lory is extremely conscientious, but she dropped the ball during our visit. Yes, everything was in its place. But refer back to the above issues. The next morning we were hosted by Kevin, who was incredibly laid back and enjoyable to talk to. The breakfast was absolutely amazing, and seriously made up for the quirkiness of the room and other idiosyncrasies. This is what it included: Bananas Purple Star Apple Egg Fruit Plant Tomato Tree (Tamarillo) Papaya Grapefruit Tangerine Lychee Blood Orange Lemon (for water) Muffins and bread: Cranberry Banana bread with chocolate chips and macadamia nuts Yogurt Hard boiled eggs Smoothie: banana, mango So much food. Way more than I should eat, but it was all so good and so well prepared. Some or most of the fruit was grown right on their property.

Yelp
Wonderful B&B! Terrific & friendly Host. Delicious & beautiful breakfast in the morning... Most of the fruit grown in the backyard...! Loved our big room in the back. Loved walking in the backyard... We loved our stay...! RECOMMENDED!!!

Yelp
We had a wonderful stay at the Old Hawaiian B&B! We came to the big island of Hawaii as part of our honeymoon. We arrived late at night and Lori was very accommodating. The room was perfect; spacious, clean and comfortable. And the grounds are just beautiful. When we moved on to another part of the island we regretted leaving, because we missed the amazing breakfasts in the morning. If we ever come back to Hawaii we would 100% stay here again.

Yelp
I agree with Annie J that the owners' concerns about "noise" are quite unwelcoming and I would not return because of it. Warnings are laid out in a confirmation message and the in-room guide, and it's the first thing I heard from Stewart when I arrived. I was told to back my car in to facilitate a quick exit when leaving early, shut the doors/trunk as carefully as possible, and never use a key fob to lock the doors lest the car make a chirp. I made the mistake of closing my car door normally a few times and was paranoid that I was going to get dressed down for it. I completely understand asking guests to keep music and conversation to a minimum during quiet hours, but this was basically "please don't make audible sounds, ever". It felt like being a guest was an inconvenience to the neighborhood. If the neighbors are that sensitive perhaps this is not the location for a B&B. Something else that irked me is that they signed me up for newsletters from bedandbreakfast.com. I did not book through that site and I don't want their emails. I had the Hawaiian room, the largest room I think. It was more private than the others, but still had large windows that were visible from the street, and sheer curtains, which made me somewhat nervous but I got over it. It was a bit dated, but comfortable and spacious for one person. The other rooms appeared to be smaller and had doors that face the lanai. The middle room didn't have any windows at all, I believe. There is no A/C here which was really surprising to me. Overnight it got cool enough that it wasn't so bad, but the daytime was hot. The yard has a lot of fruit trees and I was told I could pick some, so I enjoyed that. Probably the highlight was the yard, and the breakfast consisting of tropical fruit, banana bread/muffins, hard boiled eggs. I was only able to attend breakfast on the lanai once during my stay but I notified them of my plans and received a to-go baggie, which was appreciated. Stella served the breakfast and she was super friendly and bubbly. I really liked her. I also liked that they provided some dishes, silverware, and wine glasses in the room if you wished to eat other meals there. I would like to recommend this B&B but was turned off by their concerns about the noise involved with having a car.

Yelp
We had a lovely stay on our first and last night in Hilo. Absolutely gorgeous house, quiet, lush trees and bushes in the gardens and amazing breakfast! Lory and Stewart Hunter, husband and wife are both friendly, great hosts and just absolutely accomodating. We got to stay in two different rooms, Sunrise and Hawaiian room and they were both lovely, quiet, comfortable and water pressure was great! (Yes, water pressure is important!) :) Lory cooks breakfast every morning, fresh baked banana and chocolate macadamia muffins, fresh plate of fruits and boiled eggs with aromatic Kona coffee! Their pet dog, Sydney is a shy but very adorable dog.... Great location, walking distance to Boiling Pots Park and 1 mile to the infamous Rainbow Falls! Definitely recommended when u are in Hilo.

Yelp
Loved my experience here. Very well kept & clean. Nice hot shower & comfy bed. We arrived late (after 9pm) & were still greeting by the owner who was very kind & showed us to our room. Slept all through the night. It's was perfect. Woke up by 8am. Opened up the shades to our room & notice our breakfast already set out on the lanai. The weather was perfect & the fresh fruits (some that are picked from their backyard) & baked goods were delicious. Highly recommend staying here if stopping by Hilo & will for sure be back if I'm ever lucky enough to come back to "The Big Island".

Yelp
"Hilo in general" My wife and I stayed one night in Sept and found the guests quite interesting at the breakfast gathering. Lory was attentive and accomodating. Got the impression that Stewart wasn't a big fan of the guest interactions. Lory seemed methodical, not excited. Our biggest complaint would be in the city/town of Hilo. We ventured downtown and were surprised at how rundown and the large contingent of alcohol influenced people we encountered. Not so comfortable. I think part of our disappointment stemmed from the 7 days we had just spent in Kapalua at the beach villas. As far as value, I would say it was good given the $$$$ charged on the Waikoloa side.

Yelp
Best of the Best This charming home delivers perfection in accommodations, service and local flavor. Our bed was in the Goldilocks zone - just right. Slept like when we were kids. Ceiling fan kept us very comfortable, plenty of room and storage, lovely bath, decor was very appealing and not overdone or fussy. Our hostess pampered us with a royal spread at breakfast where we "talked story" with two other couples and lost track of time. It was glorious. If you are heading to Hilo, this is a place where your money will be well spent!

Margaret R.

Yelp
As soon as we got there, we were greeted by their dog Sydney. The hosts, Stewart and Lory, are very nice and give a lot of recommendations of where to eat in the area. I'm not sure which room we got to stay in, but it looked out into their huge backyard. The room was nice, but smelled a bit musty and felt a little damp. The room got a little stuffy, but they have a big fan over the bed. Lory makes an amazing breakfast. She serves amazing fresh fruit, fruit smoothies and boiled eggs. She also bakes sweet potato muffins, banana bread and muffins. You are definitely well-fed in the morning.

Yelp
Wonderful place !! My wife, and adult daughter stayed 2 nights. The setting is really wonderful, with great grounds. Fruit trees and traditional old Hawaiian style setting, with a great Lanai where you have breakfast overlooking the yard. The breakfast was very nice, with tropical fruit from the garden, so very fresh. It is a little outside of the downtown Hilo area, so you can't really walk into town, but other than that, a great place

Sara F.

Yelp
the breakfast is delicious, the owners charming, it is clean ... there is just no privacy in the room. I heard the couple in the other room snoring the whole night... The room we rented had a direct view to the patio with a french door.. nice view... but everybody outside can see the WHOLE room... we had to had the curtains closed the whole time... so unless you like people staring at you when you sleep, you will not wake up looking at a nice and sunny weather. For the price I would have expected more...

Yelp
I have nothing but praise for the Old Hawaiian B&B! My boyfriend and I enjoyed a four-night, relaxing stay and had a wonderful time. Lory and her husband (and their dog, Cinder) were extremely welcoming! Breakfast was fresh and delicious, and the room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. I would highly recommend the Old Hawaiian for anyone staying in Hilo!

Yelp
My husband and I are from the Seattle area. This was my husbands first time to Hawaii and his only request was to see an active volcano, so we stayed in Hilo for 3 nights at The Old Hawaiian B&B. Lory was very pleasant. She is also from Washington state....so we seemed to have a similar way about us. The prior reviewer said "not excited", but I think its a NW thing. The rooms are nice. One of them is very small, but we weren't in that one. The back lanai is where you have breakfast which consists of fruit (many interesting and tasty varieties), hard boiled eggs, and something freshly baked by Lory....muffins, breads, scones. She makes a fabulous scone....not the hard dried out scones you get at Starbucks. Lory has a couple of lawn chairs out in the yard that did quite nicely when we wanted to relax in the sun between adventures. We didn't spend much time in Hilo proper. We went to the volcano, a botanical garden, and other nearby attractions. By the way, if you are looking for local grub (as in not at all healthy), I recommend Blanes (ya, the drive up fast food place)....cheap and tasty.

Yelp
EXCELLENT! Our three night stay at this charming and comfortable B&B was fantastic. Close enough to downtown Hilo and the Volcano, you still felt like you were coming home from an adventurous day and were immediately relaxed. Lori is a FANTASTIC host and her breakfast is not to be missed - fresh fruits mostly from her own backyard, boiled eggs, yogurts, and fresh baked goods - dear god, those coconut macadamia nut scones, banana bread, cranberry orange muffins - outstanding!! i was always the last one to leave the breakfast table! She gave us great tips on places to eat around town, and you can't beat the farmers markets in Hilo. Our room was perfect, lots of windows, and the room refreshed every day. The bathroom was perfect and the shower was a rainfall blessing after hours of hiking at volcano. Lots of mosquitos, but Lori is prepared with a full can of Off out on the lanai. And the stars...oh man, gorgeous. Would happily stay here again! Thanks again Lori (and Sydney)! Can't wait to take a crack at those scones!
