A Perfect Final Morning: Exploring Jeddah's Historic Heart (Al Balad)
We visited Al Balad, the old city of Jeddah, on the last day of our trip. Staying just 5km away, it was the ideal final excursion before our night flight.
We started our morning on the right side of the main road (near the modern entrance). First, we popped into a large mall there, which was a good, air-conditioned start. Then, we walked along the Corniche to enjoy the views and breeze—a lovely contrast to what was to come.
The highlight for us was the incredible jewellery district. The number of shops is astounding, and the variety of designs, from traditional to modern, is truly breathtaking. It's a gold-lover's paradise! Alongside them, there are plenty of street-side shops for more casual, souvenir-style shopping, which added to the vibrant atmosphere.
After crossing to the left side of the road, we entered the historic Old City itself. The ancient coral houses and narrow alleyways are mesmerizing and transport you back in time. A small note for families: we had our baby with us, and the uneven streets and heat meant our little one got exhausted quite quickly. We spent about 3 hours in total exploring before heading back, which felt just right for us given the circumstances.
Excellent, especially for jewellery design and unique local goods.
Ambiance: A fascinating mix of old and new, bustling with life.
Be prepared for walking on uneven paths. Bring water, and plan shorter visits if with very young children.
Note: There are not many coffee shops or rest stops inside the old quarter itself, so plan accordingly.
A must-visit, unique area that offers an authentic slice of Jeddah's soul. Perfect for a half-day trip to experience history, culture, and some truly great shopping.
For a better experience with a baby, an early morning or late afternoon visit is recommended to avoid the peak heat.
The Al Balad area is fantastic for photography!
